Then it just depends on who has had the majority of power over the past 40 years in your state. If it's a place where the teachers unions and public employees are really strong i.e. Chicago, then Dems will have the most money and influence. If it's a place where small businesses are the big employers, Republicans will likely be the good bet. The Goldman-Sachs' of the world will give to whoever is in power at the time, so it's not like you can court them independently.

Practice. My personal favorite method: Drink bourbon, something strong like Wild Turkey 101. That's definitely one way to do it, but I've never understood it. In college (easiest plating environment in the world), I would just tell a girl I'm starting to get serious with someone else. I definitely think TRP is a paradigm shift which can be too much for some men, and I guess that would explain their hate. For me, its been nothing but a positive experience.
