I really appreciate your comment, and I'm sorry that you also relate to my experiences with limerence. I recently started taking saffron (serotonin boosting) supplements, changing my diet to eliminate red meat, and working on getting my sleep schedule back under control. I've always done well with maintaining a regular exercise routine, and I'm a non-drinker. Looking for more ways to stabilize myself. Occasionally, I find myself beating myself up for being "too old for this nonsense." There's an…

Thank you for this post! It's at least nice to know I'm not the only one who experiences this. I struggled with several long bouts of limerence in the past (mostly as a teen-25) and the obsessive thinking patterns came back last year when the man I was interested in ghosted me. With my history of childhood OCD and generalized anxiety, it shouldn't be a shock that I struggle to remain unattached when I like someone. I can literally go years without developing a crush on a man, so.... the strategy…

I'm so sorry for for your aunt's loss I had a professor in grad school (predominately female field) tell us: "Never, never, EVER let your professional license lapse! I don't care if you marry the richest guy around and plan to be a stay-at-home mom/homemaker. You maintain your license. DO NOT come back to me in twenty years with a sad story about how you didn't think you would ever need to work again and now your license is expired/you have to retest and take all this additional coursework to ge…

I've never actually known another man with a hair transplant, and at least half of the guys in my age group are experiencing thinning. I don't hold thinning hair against a guy, but I can understand that it is a confidence killer.

Good point! I commonly hear advice to date men in their late twenties/ early thirties because it's prime time for settling down. In this situation, he seems heavily focused on "adventure" AKA: tons of fun vacations throughout the year. Not that you can't get married with that lifestyle - I'm actually CF and would be fine with more travel.

Same. I've always felt that 5 years age difference was really stretching the limit for me. The oldest I've ever dated was 3 years older, and even that felt like too much because I was 23 and had only dated one other guy.

Yes. I hadn't been on the FDS threads in nearly a year. The advice from this post is already helping.

Thanks. You have some great suggestions! I have a tendency to assume the best of people, and it can be hard to strike a balance between naive and bitter/negative belief systems when it comes to dating. I have a lot less experience than average when it comes to dating, but I error on the side of maintaining strong boundaries.

True. The stereotype was probably based more about young single professors due to some of my guy friends joking about it back in the day about it being the "dream career" where you get all the best looking women. *eye roll* That and the fact that, in his case, I saw a lot of early-mid twenties women on his social media.

Also that he is athletic, very attractive, and has a crazy huge salary. I worry about the ego that could accompany all of those things, but he seemed really down to earth when we dated.

The number of guys who've gone silent when they find out that I'm a homeowner while they are still renting is ridiculous. Or when they realize the level of career success I've achieved.

Thank you. I certainly have some work to do on the negative beliefs about my age when it comes to dating. You're completely right about confirmation bias. I see that in other areas of life too (sometimes, in a positive way regarding positive beliefs)

True. I think of myself as quite the catch and just couldn't come up with any other reason besides age (or maybe that she got physical with him early on and he could tell I don't move that quickly)

I agree that 25-year-olds aren't necessarily "young and dumb," but I know I certainly put up with more BS and cared WAY too much about the opinion of every. single. person. at that age. I have grown a lot as a person in the past 9 years, and I expect to grow just as much in the next 9. Most 25-year-olds probably have more dating confidence/experience than I did back then, but who knows. I was so excited to meet this guy at first because we had so much in common, and it felt like I had finally me…

Thank you for the oxytocin ideas! I sometimes wonder if I'm overly "touch starved" because I haven't been hugged by anyone in ages and haven't had a boyfriend in many years. Threw a surprise birthday party for a friend the other day, and it definitely lifted my spirits for awhile!

True, most people guess me to be early-mid twenties (even people in that age range). I wondered if he had self-esteem issues and wants someone young to prove to himself that he's still young. He had a hair transplant, so he definitely puts in a lot of effort to look good.

Nice list! I ended things with a guy once because he wasn't willing to give the affection that I needed - Literally the primary reason for me to date men in the first place... The rest of it I can provide for myself or through platonic friendships!

True, I don't want 99% of them. It feels like less of a "choice" when I'm rarely hit on in real life and don't bother with OLD very often. I can literally go 6+ months without meeting a guy who's single and in my age range (even LVM). My job and hobbies don't make me cross paths with single men.

Yes! So many of them follow a bunch of instagram models who are college age and it makes me feel insecure about aging. I spend a lot more time worrying about my looks when I'm dating. I stay healthy/ in shape for myself, but the other aspects of my appearance are much more dependent on whether or not I'm seeing anybody.

I've literally had guys stop talking to me on OLD/ early in dating after they find out that I'm a single homeowner, have a masters degree, and own my own small company. WTF

I definitely should have put something about nobody pressuring me for sex/sexual favors on my list! That was one of my least favorite things about my long-term relationship in my 20s.

I have never lived with a boyfriend and have always had the rule of not living together until engaged. Good point about men being draining! SOOOO much of my mental energy goes into men when dating/in a relationship. Even if things are going really well/ the guy appears high value, I end up getting distracted from things that would have my focus when single.

Yes. I wish I knew that just the future faking itself was a form of abuse when I dated a guy earlier this year. It really messed me up for awhile. Now I know to shut down that behavior from the get go/ run if it's a pattern.

Omg! This is exactly what I thought on the last date I went on! Finally- a guy who can have real conversations that don't feel like interviews and who DOESN'T future fake, brag about himself, or love-bomb me!!

Yep! Feeling loved and admired becomes addictive very quickly! When I think about it, the thing I liked most about the last guy was his "potential."

This!! I dated a guy who follows over 1,000 (not exaggerating) bikini models/ cam girls on Instagram. Some of them are local and some are still in high school and under 18. It comes across as predatory, sleazy, and thirsty for a guy in his 30s to publicly follow all of these accounts.

Yes, he was definitely after "good guy" points. He didn't hide that it was out of the norm for him to wait for sex, but he would often say things like, "I'm trying to be the best guy I can be." He had a bad reputation back in the day, but said he had done a lot of growing, had been single for the past 3 years to "fix his issues," and was sooo ready to find the one and settle down.

You know, I think he does believe his own lines to some degree. That's part of what it makes it so sad. He can't stay out of his own way!

Fair point. I was struggling to listen to my gut with this guy for some reason. I'm usually pretty good at shutting things down at the first red flag, but this guy managed to worm his way in and create some mental fog.

Right!? Looking back, there were a lot of little comments like that that threw me off balance because they were just so random and cringy. I can't figure out if he knows he's waving red flags or if he is oblivious to it.

I briefly dated a guy who: Became irritated when I would mention a friend of mine who I hang out with regularly. Annoyed when I would "talk too much" about my passions that didn't involve him. Stopped listening to me in the middle of a conversation and became paranoid because a man across the street looked at me. Mocked me for my love of coaching young athletes and finding it so fulfilling. He's was sarcastically like, "Yeah. I've heard. You talk about it. A lot." (Said the guy who claimed he's …

He was certainly unlike any guy I have ever dated! His comment about makeup sex made me think, "So... you never actually sit down, have a conversation, and solve issues? You think you can just bang it out?!?" Umm, PASS

That's what I would prefer for a first kiss. I've only kissed 5 guys in my life (I'm pretty inexperienced in dating), so I appreciate knowing what a normal pace might look like!

Thanks. I guess I was confused because, at this point, I don't know what the good guys do say on this topic! You make a good point that it was all unprovoked. He brought it up while he was bombarding me with questions about what I'm looking for (Then tells me his laundry list of what he's looking for) and digging up details about what I like.) He was pretty intense about him being 33 and being soooo ready to settle down have kids. Even though I fully understand the feeling that time is running o…

Thanks. It was hard to do because he really presented himself as everything I was looking for (I know that's how LVM operate, but I had never been tricked by one like him before. Master love bomber/ future faker!) edit: typo

Yeah, we didn't kiss for about a week, but then he gets really intense with the first kiss instead of a light/sweet kiss. I guess I'm not even sure what first kisses with guys are supposed to be like anymore because I feel like they usually come charging out of the gate with these overly hot kisses right away...

My response to him saying he was probably more sexual than me was, "Well, you knew I wasn't going to jump into bed with you..." His response to that was only, "Hmm." lol What a great communicator!

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
