Congratulations, it's amazing the freedom a man can get from being debt free and having total control over managing his income. I'm much older than you, and have been debt free for 30 years. I think part of the "don't die alone" mentality is also "don't live alone" for a long time before you die; and for me that doesn't work. I'm almost 70 and have lived happily alone for the last 35 years, the most satisfying & fulfilling years I've had. When I was younger I had a lot more "friends" than now" but I suffered from loneliness more then. Perhaps they were more acquaintance than friend, and we didn't really know each other well, and our social activities were frivolous. Now I have 2 or 3 good male friends and we know each other well with few secrets, and converse and socialize infrequently. We know we can count on each other. Loneliness is rarely an issue for me nowadays, though I spend 90% of time alone.

My father was the alcoholic town drunk and my mother was a self-centered hypochondriac. I was on my own from the age of 16, and think I'm better off today because of their role models and from subsequent experiences. Most men I know get to a stage of not needing or wanting people around to avoid being alone. Many of these people were not genuine friend anyhow and it sounds like these 2 weren't. I now have 3 or 4 men I call friends. We know each other well and discuss our plans, ideas and what we've been doing. We don't have everything in common, 2 of my buds are hunters, while I cook & raise bees. We're all pretty self sufficient and inner directed, but know we can rely on each other.

Just hope that she keeps making the car payments on time. When I got divorced, my wife & I agreed that 3 credit accounts of ours were hers entirely; they had small or no balances and she alone used them. For 10 years after that her late payments of small amounts less than $100 dinged my credit report. The companies said they were joint accounts and wouldn't take me off from them, and wouldn't close them without her signing. My Fico went up almost a hundred points when she finally died.

You are right, you are never going to be the same again, but if you make good choices now, you'll be immeasurably better. Stop telling yourself you love her and start to socialize with your own family or buds. Get out of the house. Take care of legal matters to get divorced and child custody and go after her for child support. Focus on a creative or constructive activity or learn one. I think the rural and small conditions are more amenable to men's friendships and male bonding for a couple of reasons. It's amazing how they can all ignore the effects on their health. My petite ex-wife who went from 80 lb to 370 lb over the years died from obesity. I used to enjoy cars and have previously had a Porsche Cayenne, and a Hummer H-1, and years ago a MGB and a Lincoln Town Car. Anecdotally, after one of their college concerts in 1967 or 68 they came to the country club where I worked to party. Herb gave me a copy of Whipped Cream autographed by him & his band. I didn't realize 50's and 60's music is popular now. I was born in 1950 & grew up listening to Elvis, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Simon & Garfunkle often on a transistor radio and on 33 & 45 records. If you can get a scholarship and graduate with little to no debt, then it's worthwhile. It's been below 20 degrees all day, so I've stayed inside & cooked. Baked 4 loaves of bread and some brioches. And made veggie burgers for tonight and 6 extras for the freezer. Just finished 2 of the burgers browned in coconut oil on toasted brioche with homemade pickles that I made last summer and guac. It's been a great day.

Maybe you're just learning new fields. You might not excel at everything, but as long as you get through the ones that don't come naturally, you can still finish your computer science degree. I majored in accounting and had 15 hours of economics, 12 required. I barely forced myself to finish micro eco and hated every class. I had my last drink of alcohol in June of 1985, so it's been a little less than 33 years. I had gotten 3 DWI's and was married and miserable almost to the point of despair. Stopping drinking made me capable of thinking clearly and it was at that point I would say I started GMOW. How about cooking. I was never interested in it until recently but really like trying new recipes, cooking methods, spices and see how they taste and if I like them. Also bake bread at least twice a week, usually give some tofriends. You have to eat anyhow, so this could save you money and improve your diet. Requires some equipment but nothing too expensive.

For breakfast have either pancakes or old fashioned oatmeal. A box of pancake flour is $1,29 at Aldi lasts for 6 or 7 breakfasts. Use milk instead of water, a little more than directions, and pancakes will be richer, thinner & can be a little crisp. I cook in a cast iron skillet. Also old fashioned oatmeal is about $2.40 for 2.5 lb, which makes a lot of breakfasts. You can add cinnamon, raisins, whatever you like.

Many cities are or are becoming too expensive for working people to live in, and the quality of life gets worse. I moved from one of them, but was lucky to be financially able to do so, and love it here. And there are some people who live here and work from home but there are not many good paying jobs. You're exactly right that living in a house with no debt gives the owner a freedom not available any other way. Rent only goes up and never ends. If you do need a mortgage, avoid using a mortgage broker because loans cost much more from them; go direct to the bank/lender. I think it's in great demand too, and maybe a little more seasonal since ac repair is a lot bigger business than furnace repair. I didn't say before, but I would avoid commercial trade schools entirely; their students incur big debts & don't gain much employability. Gardening is mentally helpful to me. It's a combination of things, but mainly I think satisfaction from the growth and results plus the time spent outside. And the mental relaxation is a big part. Weather is below freezing. Plan on a 20 mile hike-or however far I get-don't expect anyone to be at the lake. Will let my 2 dogs off leash; their joy is contagious when I do that.
