This is good advice. Whatever car you decide to buy make sure it has good aftermarket support (like a civic). There are a lot of cheap one-off or high end luxury cars that will tempt you but repair costs can quickly turn them into a nightmare. Buy the best car you can afford even if it means putting off mod purchases for a while. I don't recommend auctions without having someone knowledgable about car mechanics with you. Even then they are a crap shoot.

Honestly it was my mistake, I was just starting a new career and the divorce devastated me psychologically so I thought it would be better for the kids to stay with their mother. I still had them 40% of the time but financially it was a terrible decision. If I had to do it all over again I would fight tooth and nail to have joint custody, not just for financial reasons but because I am a much better parent than I gave myself credit for back then.
