To avoid currency inflation, to have more control of their money, to hedge against the next down-turn (economies move in cycles) where people will seek safety outside of the banking system. Bitcoin is backed by energy through the mining process. The process is exactly the same as mining units of gold, where you require diesel and other fuels to mine it from the earth with equipment. Bitcoins are mined 'data' instead of gold but the process of energy being required is the same.

To put it simply - Bitcoin is a p2p decentralized store of wealth medium that works via its cryptography 'proof of work' algorithm that allows people to store and transport high amounts of wealth internationally and across borders. Holding cash in a bank pays no interest, your cash is loaned out as debt, and banks can put withdrawel limits or close up to prevent you getting your money out.
