One thing to keep in mind is that both Reddit and this sub aren’t representative of the whole population. People who are living the life are less likely to post here. As someone who recently divorced, I can share that financially she got the raw deal. Had she listened to me and done mediation earnestly she’d have made a bunch more. I’m in a better financial spot today than ever. Parentally, she also failed at every step. I got literally everything I asked for and more. Emotionally, well - shit’s…

You need to chat with a lawyer. The legal aspects of this can vary wildly based on your location and situation. You should also let your boss know that your wife has made this threat so they can back you should it come up again. Stay in your integrity. Let her act crazy. Document and record what you can. This behavior will not reflect kindly on her when it hits custody or the court systems. Wishing you strength.

Therapy can help. What I learned in the same experience was that I was so focused on my ex-wife's needs that feelings of self-preservation didn't appear until months down the line. I never allowed myself the anger. So I ended up feeling in all-consuming waves of rage and despair. Once I was able to face it I could then look at incorporating joy as a habit. Working out. Reading. People. Whatever it was, I needed to ease myself back into the idea of being happy. There is no backsliding, this is yo…

Thank you for sharing your insight. The Tender Year Doctrine is very interesting. It looks to have been abolished in favor of no-fault: Most states have eliminated this presumption, and some courts have held that the tender years doctrine violates the EQUAL PROTECTION CLAUSE of the FOURTEENTH AMENDMENT to the U.S. Constitution because it discriminates on the basis of sex. It seems the pendulum swung hard on this one over the past 200 years in the US and Britain. Here's one good overview from the…

At 4:30 he says: "The objective fact that the plaintiff is thereby breaking a legal contract is ignored and replaced by the subjective power to turn a personal preference into a legal fact". This is his initial argument highlighting that divorces for personal preference are unlawful. He is stating very directly that a woman's preference should not be able to override the contract she signed. Simple. And Ruth Institute, the people holding this event, agree because that aligns with their strict in…

I gave you time stamps and exact quotes. You’re literally debating a video, genius. 🤣 He says the state should not allow divorce if wanted by one party. There is no gray area in that statement. Men are not guaranteed to lose, they’re guaranteed to get half. This is much better than it was 100 years ago when women had the children by default. You would have had alimony in the 1800s and today. There are also fault states where these factor in and can have an impact on outcomes. It is not governmen…

His key arguments are logical fallacies based on opinion. 1) "Radical innovation in legal system, state intrusion and violation of the Constitution" Their evidence is insanely weak, giving opinions as fact. He says no public vote has taken place on this. Yes, that's how our representative government works. We vote for people to represent us. He is advocating for violating the constitution. He says that divorces shouldn't be granted at 4:30. He states that divorces of preference shouldn't be allo…

This talk was presented by The Ruth Institute. The Ruth Institute (RI) is a Louisiana-based Catholic organization aimed at halting the “sexual revolution” – a catch-all concept that has become an axiom on the Christian Right and is used to describe an apparently conspiratorial project to undermine the “traditional” heterosexual family in the name of sexual freedom. This speaker is mentioned: Also among their experts is Stephen Baskerville, a professor of government at Patrick Henry College, who …

You’re doing the right thing. Your spouse had a chance to address the lack of closeness and intimacy and did not. Last minute begging is the sign of someone who knows they didn’t do their job. On the new partner end, yes. Instantly I found someone who both desired me and exceeded my sexual drive. It was a revelation. So yes, you’ll definitely find someone who is a better match for you. There’s no reason to be trapped with someone who wants you to be isolated for their own entertainment.

Many states are two party consent. That said, and this is not legal advice, but record anyway. Wife attacked me. Had it on recording. When the police came they blamed me. Recording to the rescue. Wife said I threatened her. I didn’t. Was secretly recording her. She went from calling her lawyer to have me kicked out to admitting I did nothing. If you have suspicion that a crime is going to be committed or that someone will lie on you to get what they want, always protect yourself!

Here are two that took a minute to find: “It would be a mistake to conclude that all affairs (and infidelity-related behaviors) similarly result from deficits in the primary relationship,” the studies authors write. Talk to your lawyer. No, you don't owe her anything. As two separate people, her inability to find proper transport is now her concern. You may want to choose to help her, but if you do it would be smart to put a limit on this, such as "I will help you pick you up tomorrow and Saturday, but will be unable to provide transportation after this point".

She hasn't been honest about anything really. I think she is still deciding if this is what she wants. If she isn't saying "Hell yes!" then you have your answer. You're her plan B. She wants more but is a coward, fearful not of losing you but of her safety net. This ambivalence would not be okay for a large purchase, but for some reason, we allow it for the person we choose for the rest of our lives. In terms of happiness, yes there is happiness ahead. But it can take time. I've been in this pro…

As someone once in a similar situation now 10 years later: don’t do it. Can it happen? Yes. But can it be solved by the measures taken? No. Couples therapy may help. Individual counseling for both of you too. But just hoping time or church will help…well, then every marriage would be solved quite easily. But how long are you willing to be with someone you don’t trust? Ten more years? Thirty? And what happens when (as I’ve seen many times) the excuse appears that she cheats because you didn’t tru…

I believe I’m personally at the $30k mark, not including the $20k+ my spouse has spent. And we’re about 75% way done. People who are married pay less to the state and federal than individuals. Marriage was a way to financially incentivize what they believed was moral. Also the divorce industrial complex as you label has 1/10 the income of the wedding industrial complex. The con isn’t the divorce as much as the selling of love as solution to all of life’s problems, with spending money the celebration.

I don't think marriage is inherently bad. But I also don't think staying with one person in time is likely to be successful long-term. People change, and making a promise like this is beyond the capacity of most creatures.

You’re right in that in a weird way, if a partner does less they get more. Don’t have a job? You get money for a while. Contribute less? Here’s something fancy for you. Add nothing at all but dead weight? You get half. That is lunacy.

Interesting perspective. My dad was a deadbeat and set had 6-7 families, leaving each one in the dust in a few years, so likely not. But I do think you have a point that the system was set up to punish men emotionally, financially, and mentally for any change in martial status. On the good side, I don't think that is as much the case today. My soon-to-be ex's jaw dropped when she learned that she learned that her years of affairs would have consequences. We did our job Reddit! When divorce happens all bets are off. You can be amicable, but you're splitting your lives up and that is rarely a pleasant experience. Paying a lawyer is the smartest investment in your and the kid's future.

Your wife is stacking the deck so that if you choose to split you will lose custody of your kids. Courts always go with what they current arrangement is, which would be you seeing your kids rarely. Stay in the home.

If it didn’t change a thing then every lawyer in the country would not recommend it. Angry people make irrational decisions. The laws can stay the same, but a partner can drag it out for years if they want to make life hell. I agree you should do what you want, but it literally will cost you in time and money at every step depending on your partner.

One thing I’ve found to be interesting is that most women still think of divorce as existing as it did in the 90’s. They think the woman gets the kids. That they’ll get half and then some. They’ll get alimony and child support in surplus. That’s what the movies show. The reality of divorce is now 50/50. The alimony is based on comparable income, and since many women are equal earners they don’t fare well here. And since the split is 50/50 the child support payments are manageable. Just like the …

Someone who loves you respects your pain points. Getting fucked hard by a loveless marriage "contract" by a cheating whore who will face zero consequences makes me unwilling to do this again. I'm not dating, but I think a chunk of this is age. Early 30's seems to be prime "I'm going to have kids" years for women, and they want to lock down a man without kids. Late 30's is "My life imploded" years and now that they have kids they don't care as much. It is more about happiness and stability. If I were you I'd aim my age range higher as the shift in attitude is massive. Another thing is COVID. It's a weird time. I wouldn't take anything personally right now.

The intimacy thing is a real mind fuck. Here’s this person that on one level I love, lust for, and simultaneously loathe. Sex with them is just a roller coaster. I’ve come to the conclusion that while sex is great, I’d rather not trauma bond to this person. It can be hard not to want to slip back into the “happy marriage” routine, even if just on the surface. But to each their own and hoping you all are able to find happiness however you move forward!

In many states cheating doesn’t factor into the divorce. This is called “no fault” and it is now common. Do a quick search to see what your state’s stance on infidelity is before you get any expectations. Sadly, this means that the spouse is given equal time with children and assets. Karma will have to come in her life another way. I’m sorry you’re going through this. You will get out stronger!

Document. Ask in writing weekly until she follows through. Be patient and civil. Follow up and create a log of attempts and her violation. Ask the teacher if you could be CC'd on all responses, which would give you a copy of the original message. If she continues, bring your thick log to court. Showcase how she is not following the plan. Make sure she feels watched. Good luck.

I'm just suggesting to look into codependency. Codependency is a behavioral condition in a relationship where one person enables another person's addiction, poor mental health, immaturity, irresponsibility, or under-achievement. Your wife is an addict. She is mentally unwell. She cheated on you. She dumped the kids on you. And you have learned to enable her through your endless support. A judge will see this. Look into codependency. You shouldn't be asking if you should move after someone has attacked you for your whole marriage. My guess is you are codependent and have been her caretaker for your entire relationship. Also, your mother was likely similar, where you had to watch over her because she didn't act like the adult. This book might help or check out CODA.org. Wishing you happiness up ahead.

Depends on a bunch of factors, which a lawyer is best to help you with. But I will say that it takes time, so if you want to speed things along getting in line can't hurt. Worst case you can always hop out. Good luck!

I’m sorry you’re going through this. Breathe. Contact friends. Workout. Talk to a therapist if you can. Yes, she wants to keep all she has acquired, while extracting you. It is also a subtle way to force you to keep working high income jobs. This is unreasonable. She knows this. Downsizing will be required, as you’re no longer a two person income. It is time to place your and the kids needs first, not hers. The kids want to see their father more than they want to live in the same house. Take som…

Have you brought up that you'd like to talk to her then? Have you discussed talking during movies before and has she been cool with it? Because if so and she acts like this, well that's really inconsiderate. She is changing the rules randomly which must be very frustrating. I'd bring this up and if she can't have a conversation about it then it is a really warning sign that even basic communication has broken down. Good luck.

First off, I’m sorry. You don’t deserve this and neither does your daughter. Second, suicide isn’t the answer. Living a happier life after this is the answer. Your daughter needs you. More importantly, you have the best moments ahead of you. It will hurt the next few months, but you can do this. Third, that therapist is a monster. Go find another and consider this a sign the first wasn’t right for you. Forth, your wife is already dealing with the consequences of her awful actions. It may look ni…

I’m sorry. Know that a wandering heart doesn’t change. She will get to experience the other side in time. There’s a special place in hell for cheaters. And know that your kids will eventually see who their mom is when they do the math on their new sibling. It is time to embrace your happiness and let her train wreck play itself out on its own terms, free from impacting you.

If you ever need someone to chat with, I’m here. Been there. It really does get better. If you can, find a good friend or psychologist. It helps. Be well and know that you will get through this.

Cameras and voice recorders. Record everything. Check your local laws, but keep them in communal places. Have all conversations here. Then if she accuses you let her call the police and make a report. When interviewed by police tell them about the evidence. You now will be able to prove she is liar in a police report, which will help your divorce as well.

Can you imagine telling a woman this? Or a minority? It may be cognitive bias, but it equally could not be.
