How long were you married? Do you have kids? How old are you? If you're E4, I assume early 20s. I would just bail and consider yourself lucky this didn't happen 12 years into marriage with 2 kids. Typical advise to never get married again goes without saying.

I agree completely. My ex wife was from another country and once she came to the US her attitude changed. Friends and coworkers polluted her mind and she turned into an entitled bitch.

I got an attorney so I could find out what my worse case scenario was regarding spousal support and asset split. Then I used that info to negotiate a better deal with my ex wife. I probably saved myself $200k by sucking up to my ex wife and giving her what she wanted, which was way less than the worse case scenario. I painted myself as a loser and told her she'd find someone way better than me. 10 years later she still texts me occasionally about how broke she is and how she's struggling. I gave…

I'm not totally against it, but it should be need based with a plan for the recipient to become independent. Not like my case, where my alimony funded a 3 year vacation for my ex wife.

You gotta get with a lawyer without her knowing so you can figure out what your worst case scenario is. That's your baseline, then you try to negotiate up from there in your favor with your wife without getting lawyers involved.

Guys that choose to remain single the rest of their lives haven't "Given up." We've just realized the juice isn't worth the squeeze and signing a contract with the government that doesn't explicitly state the termination clauses is a bad idea. Good luck to you, maybe you didn't get screwed as bad as a lot of us did, but I can assure you, I will not be getting married again after everything I went through. I had one girlfriend after my divorce that started pressuring me to marry her so I dumped h…

That lawyer should be able to put the numbers into the Dissomaster. Just run a scenario where your income is higher and see how much the alimony increases. I wouldn't count on CA not considering that income. When I filed, I worked a ton of OT the previous years, nearly doubling my income. The alimony calculation didn't take into account that half of my income would come from OT. It didn't consider the scenario where I lost all OT. The Dissomaster spit out $3,500/month in alimony. Basically manda…

I've always been pretty frugal, never inherited anything, no support from parents. I put the down payment on my house when I bought it and paid my own way through college with the GIBill. I think my net worth was about $300k at the age of 37 when I got divorced. Doesn't seem like much but I amassed it all on my own. I gave her our paid off house, worth about $130k at the time and the alimony came out to be about $65k. That was 8 years ago. I've reaccumulated that and some through frugality. She'…

That's exactly what it's about. If it was easy to get divorced the social welfare programs would go bankrupt from so many of the "stay at home" spouses ending up on the streets. What really pisses me off is that it's not based on anything reasonable. I gave my ex wife a paid off house and car. How much more money do you need to survive? You could work at Starbucks 40 hours per week and live a decent life with monthly bills that low. But no, it's half your take home pay. I had to pay $2,000/month…

I got divorced 8 years ago, lost $200k between the assert split and the alimony. Once in awhile my ex wife will text me with stories of how she's struggling. I just respond with..."I'm still struggling too, I lost all my money in divorce. Have you found a sugar daddy yet?" 😅 My life couldn't be better. I have stacks of cash from not having to support that deadbeat. The stories of struggle fill my heart with joy. She had an easy life but female nature fucked her. Enjoy the cats and boxed wine. 👍💩

I realized it was all bullshit several years ago. Maybe it was around 2013, I realized Facebook was total bullshit. I knew of several people that were curating their profiles to make it look like they were doing well, successful, but I knew they were flat ass broke and up to their asses in debt. I bailed, I didn't want to participate anymore. I had no reasons to seek validation from others. I got my validation from my own successes and had no desire to broadcast those details to people. What she doesn't understand is the people who appear to be living a lavish lifestyle on social media may very well be up to their asses in debt. My oldest sister is like this. She drives new cars, lives in a big 5,000 square foot house, but it's all fueled by debt. I doubt her net worth is even half of what mine is. Last time I talked to her a few years ago she mentioned retirement for the first time. She's mid 50s. Not much can be done 10 years from average retirement age. She'll probably work …

I assume you are 20 years old. Typical retirement age is 65, so you would invest your retirement money into VLXVX within an IRA or 401k. Go Roth IRA if you don't need the tax break of a traditional IRA.

I would just go with a target date fund for an IRA. Once you reach the minimums for admiral shares, roll your own target date fund by matching the asset allocation with individual vanguard funds (VTSAX, VTIAX, VTABX, and VBTLX).

I seriously know a woman in this situation. She got baby rabbies and went on a US tour de cock. She stopped by my place, got a couple drinks then I noped the fuck out of there. 1 year later she send me a pic of her with the mixed kid, trying to hit me up to be the beta bux. I just laughed and send her single mom memes occasionally. She's got to be hating life. She used to be kind of hot about 15 years ago. Now she is post wall single mom, pretty sad.

Same shit happened to me, but took me a couple years to finally get divorced. I was paying all of the bills for years then one day I got laid off during the great recession, drove home and told my wife at the time, asked her to pick up half the bills until I found another job. I'll never forget the look of disgust on her face. It was at that point, I started planning my exit.

If it was so easy to get a divorce, what do you think would happen to all of these dead beat spouses in their 50s and 60s? They'd be lining up at the public housing office, food stamp, and welfare lines. What would happen to the state budget? Bankrupt. So instead of the state going bankrupt, best to put the burden on the bread winning spouse. Marriage is a fucking scam. Just Say No.

I have a friend that married a woman from the Phillipines. I was over there at a birthday party or something. I can't recall what led up to this remark but she said "Yeah, you can just divorce him and take all the money." Everyone heard it. They have 3 kids. I look over to my friend, the husband, like WTF. He just had this defeated look on his face. I feel so bad for the guy. His wife doesn't work, 3 kids. If he pulled the plug he'd be decimated. A fine example of "Cheaper to Keeper"...haha

I got with a divorce attorney to find out what my worse case scenario was based on assets and income, etc. Then I sucked up to my wife, and asked if she'd be willing to come to an agreement without getting lawyers involved and went to a divorce mediator to prepare the paperwork. I lost about 1/3 of my assets and probably paid 1/3 of what court ordered spousal support would have been. I lost $200k in total. If you have documentation of what you had going into the marriage, that might not be considered community property. Also consider your state laws. 10 years of marriage may mean "lifetime" alimony. If that's the case, you might want to get cracking, buddy. I filed my divorce papers 3 weeks before my 10 year anniversary. I got away with 3 years of alimony. Back then it was tax deductible, which was a nice bonus for me and a kick in the teeth for her at tax time.

USA, I lost $200,000 total. I was married just shy of 10 years, no kids. $55,000 was 3 years of alimony (spousal support). $145,000 was the value of the house I paid off right before I got divorced. She wanted the house, which represented about 1/3 of my assets at the time, so I agreed to it. The divorce itself only cost about $2,000. I consulted with a divorce attorney who told me my worst cast scenario based on my income and assets, and advised me to try to come to an amicable divorce agreemen…

Yeah, $28/ounce. Look at 100 ounce bar prices, >$3,200. So you're essentially paying a $400 transaction fee to buy physical. You gotta see a 14.3% increase just to break even. Why is it so expensive to buy silver when stock transactions are like $5/trade?

The guy can win if he plays his cards right. He needs to tell the wife that he understands she doesn't love him anymore. "Please sign this divorce settlement letting me keep most of my assets" and offer half for child support of what the courts would order. Cut this bitch off, get out with as much as he can, playing the victim, and avoid expensive divorce courts and lawyers. Rebuild life, succeed and make this bitch realize her mistakes when she's postwall, broke, and alone.

I agree completely. I heard a podcast recently that discussed the current political division. In the 90s you could support 5 out of 8 of the major political party issues and still be considered a part of that party. But now if you aren't 100% onboard with all 8 of them, you're considered a traitor piece of shit, just because you have some opposing views on a few of them. I think it's a systemic way of keeping the entire country divided while a handful of people at the top of the totem pole make …

The problem is they care too much about what other people think of them. To be frugal and conservative with money, you have to sacrifice your image a bit. Instead of driving a BMW, you drive a Honda Accord, etc. Most people can't do it because they have low self esteem and need material things to prop up their ego.

This all works until there is a housing or stock market crash. People have gotten used to housing and stocks going up for 10 years straight, but it won't last forever. The stock market with eventually correct. Interest rates won't stay at 0 forever.

Good advise. I made that mistake once. I hit $100k net worth at the age of 27. I was super excited and told my room mate about it. The following week he asked me to pay more for the room I was renting from him. He made up some excuse that his girlfriend cooks fairly often and shares with me. I agreed and decided to never again tell anyone about my financial success, not even my family. They can all assume I'm broke for all I care.

It's already fucked. The whole thing has been propped up by record low interest rates. Everybody's just throwing all of their excess cash into the stock market because money markets and bonds are only paying .25%. I actually calculated this once. I was married for 10 years, probably had sex once every week on average (more in the beginning, less at the end). So, I had sex 520 times during my marriage. I lost a total of $200k in the divorce. So $384 per fuck. I once had a guy offer me 2 chicks at the same time for $20 in Patpong. But that was like 20 years ago, I'm sure the rates have increased. Real estate, mutual funds, individual stocks, small businesses, etc. combined to give yourself a we'll balanced portfolio of investments. If you want real estate exposure, you could also buy REIT mutual funds that take away some risk of being a land lord.
