Based on your username I suspect you're just trolling but... I was not referring to rape laws specifically, but rather that we do employ old and outdated definitions that can cause problems left and right, not just in cases of sexual violence. The FBI defines rape as "penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim". So according to the FBI, at least, men can only be rap…

I have hundreds of recipes ranging from 15 minutes to several days. Cooking can be a minor and mostly insignificant chore to a wonderful hobby. I've never understood why people complain about it being so time-consuming; it only takes a long time if you either enjoy doing it or are objectively terrible when it comes to kitchen efficiency.

I mean, my thought process is as follows... Let's say you have a six year old kid with your wife, and that the kid isn't yours, but you don't know that last part. There clearly hasn't been much concern over whether or not the kid was yours. You've pretty much just accepted it thus far. At this point, it's pretty safe to say that you should be pretty attached to your son or daughter. I would also assume that the marriage is generally a good one. Infidelity (if important) is a nonissue or you woul…
/r/MensRights17/07/18 06:34 PM

I understand the logic behind the ban. I just don't completely agree with it. The idea is that a negative result from the test will break up the family, and thus be a negative influence on everyone involved, including the kid. I would support a ban after several years of the kid's life. Basically, once it calls you "Dad", I do think you should be locked in to your commitment as a father. Until that point, though, it's stupid to force men into raising a kid if they find out it isn't theirs. Ultim…

The biggest feminist I know has never earned a cent. She got an Ivy league degree, married my software engineer buddy, and spends all day ranting on social media about sexism while her husband works two jobs to pay for the house. I haven't spoken a word to her since the wedding and I'd like to keep it that way. RIP Tim.

I'm not denying that men top women in just about any physical activity. I'm just curious about the oddly-specific skills they mentioned in the screenshot. "More accurate throwing" and "more accurate blocking of thrown objects" is very different than "women lost against boys in a soccer match". There's a lot more going on in a soccer match than just these skills. Soccer involves a lot of speed and strength, for example - and when it comes to those, I don't think it's up for debate who's more equi…

Just to play devil's advocate here, it does seem like a couple of these could possibly be trained advantages. Things like reaction times and throwing objects are important to the way boys traditionally play. Of course, I'm far too lazy to actually look up the sources. Maybe they controlled for it. Maybe they only tested really young kids. And it doesn't change the numerous biological advantages men have for certain tasks (not just military).

It's been over a decade since that dark time. I never sought help and kept everything relatively well-hidden. People knew I was depressed, but they didn't know how badly or what to do about it. I've just recently started opening up to people, including my dad, who until a month ago had no idea I wanted to die back then. I have to educate people on how to respond, and raising awareness about this stuff is important to me now. After visiting a Zen Buddhist temple for a school project, I learned to…

I stopped mentioning it in general on Reddit, but I can speak to this personally. I made some stupid drunken decisions with my money but got lucky, and now I'm sitting on more wealth than a vast majority of the country. I have seen my portfolio dip in six figures on bad market days. I haven't so much as looked at a price tag in years, but on those bad days, anxiety and anger come in full force. He never had a real large range of emotion, just kind of a flat emotional delivery even of things he supposedly liked. This resonates with me because I feel that's what I'm like every day. I don't know, man. When I was suicidal, hanging was not a very good option to my unwell brain. It's pretty hard to get the appropriate drop distance indoors, for example. I do not advocate suicide; these were my two plans that I nearly executed when I was ill, though: Floor a car off of a cliff without a seatbelt. Even if I had survived the initial impact, there was a 0% chance of being conscious while I bled out. Shotgun blast right between the eyes. So long as you don't flinch, this is practic…

I was never religious, but when I was suicidal, I sought help from religious leaders too. I was greeted with very similar advice. I found it in bad taste, and borderline offensive. I found my "salvation" in atheistic Zen Buddhism and meditation. It didn't get rid of the suicidal depression, but definitely helped me manage it. I recommend trying it for anyone out there looking for anything to help.

My father won custody without a murder charge against my mother. It just took him 15 years and nearly a cool million in attorney's fees to do it. ...Why it was so hard for a judge to award custody to a successful attorney over a high-school dropout woman who couldn't hold a job as a waitress is pretty sad.

I was suicidal for two years as well, though I suppose I'm lucky it was when I was in high school, so I didn't share any familial obligations. However, I faced some similar issues. My private high school had sent me home, instructing me not to return to campus until a shrink passed me as someone who wasn't going to hurt himself. Sounds appropriate on paper, but I would have been expelled for missing classes, as any absences were not excused. This only encouraged me to lie my way out of the three…

No. School is intended to teach you skills, not memorization. The concept of education was never to give girls better grades; it's to enable people to learn. He's saying that boys embody that original intent, and more or less that girls have figured out how to game the system.

I'm sure you didn't mean it this way, but you make it sound like guys never flirt just... to flirt. Your classmate is a different story if only because your exchanges were over a long period of time, but I don't think people in a service industry are necessarily leading you on by flirting (particularly in restaurants and bars where it leads to better tips). Both sexes enjoy flirting. It plays to our imaginations and it's generally a good feeling to have that kind of attention.

The entire article is fucking disgusting. The woman was a murderer. Unless you're going to write about fucked up things that drove her to madness, why should we care at all about details of her life? Also... she wanted to take the kid to Europe, but MEAN OLD JUDGE AND HUSBAND wouldn't let her! ..... You know why? Because lots of people fucking run. And considering she thought murder-suicide was the only way forward, certainly seems like she might have considered it.

As much as I wish the law was cut and dry, there could be ways an attorney could defend the recording. Off the top of my head, the immediate defense would probably be that there's no expectation of privacy in the workplace. The only way we would know if the law you linked to is truly applicable would be if they went to court.

My wife hates seeing me cry, but it isn't because it makes me unattractive. It's because she doesn't know how to help or what to do. IMO, that's an important distinction. What makes it worse is that, since I openly cry in a more selective manner, what ails me is usually devastating when I do break down.

Here's a truly radical idea: How about we assume for a change that men know what they're doing and quite correctly decide not to show their emotions because life is already hard enough without the consequences that would bring. I would get behind that. For as much as I've heard that I lack empathy or that I need to be me open about how I feel, I don't have to look very far for a counterpoint. That's a stupid way of analyzing it, but you're probably right. We all know about calculating slopes. If this trend was linear (as is shown by the stupid chart), think about what would happen in 100 years. If they wanted to make an argument based on percentage, they should have made a chart for "percent increase in suicide rate by gender". "If women want equality, they're going to have to start taking their lives in greater numbers!" ~ George Carlin (paraphrased)

I agree, though I think it's fine to say you want women to have to sign up for the draft; there are plenty of roles in the military that need to be filled that don't require the biological strength advantage men have. A lot of people here might see that as just moving the goalposts, though, since women signing up for the draft but not being assigned to combat roles with the same frequency will still mean men are dying more often. There's a point at which we can't reconcile all gender differences…

I'm the same way; I wouldn't be able to do it, either. I would like to imagine that I would at least financially provide for someone who saved my life, but I wouldn't be able to change enough to make the relationship work. I think most of us would have at some point, but I think that's an issue with the age of consent. We understand what we're doing before 18. Teachers sleeping with 13 year olds? 10? 8? There's a point where it's obvious that it's rape, but we can't agree on where it is.

For example, other men and women will call men less of a man for being depressed I think a lot of it can be attributed to fear of something they don't understand. prenups I mean, what possible incentives do most women have to sign one? Put yourself in their shoes for a minute. I have my own reasons for getting married, too. But, from reading your posts, I feel unwelcome, or that you think less of me for it - regardless of however true that may be. Antagonistic writing likes this is why people think we're all a group of basement-dwelling trolls. Even though there are definitely some interesting points, I have to ultimately call it a shit post.

From the actual document.... the Defendants conclude that Doe should be awarded “[a] maximum of $336,000 to $364,000” This case is at a stage where it's not so much a "did he win or not" as a "how much did he actually spend in his defense, and is his counsel inflating their numbers?" "Attorneys fees and litigation costs" does not cover damages, that's a separate figure.

There's another facet here, which is that it doesn't seem to be forbidden to give the other party your contact information without being prompted. I feel like this is the general goal; rather than put someone on the spot to give you their number, it's encouraged to voluntarily disclose yours. I think the only fair thing to do is ban both parties from asking for information, but I don't think this is a huge issue, either.

Legally speaking, yes, it can be. If I raise my fist to strike you, it's still assault, regardless of whether or not I hit you. Just because something is assault doesn't mean you need to prosecute for it. We all break laws on a daily basis, but it's important to have the legal definition and precedent there when it is a big deal.

It would be good to have something where she admits that you were always supportive gentlemen. Unfortunately, that doesn't exist, and she won't respond to us anymore (which is a problem for the remaining class assignments). The closest I've got is the civility in my emails to her and comments left on our paper. At least I'm exceedingly careful in phrasing, but that's all I've got.

Right now, the only thing we know is that a complaint exists. There's not really anything to discuss with him yet. I just called him to warn him that this might be a thing - and mostly to ask if he felt like he would be suited for the task if I do need him. The university wouldn't be doing their job if they didn't investigate.

I've got a file of around 600 pages ready (most of it is the numerous revisions of our project), but I'm not showing my hand unless I must. If I'm being honest, it's pretty hard not to get a 3.3 here. In my current classes, I have a 115% and a 102%. This program is far easier than I anticipated. The only people I've watched miss that target are the people who just simply don't do assignments / study for exams, but even they can usually skate by. My program is primarily project-based, so poor students leech off of those of us who actually put effort into our work - and not every class has team evaluations.

Proving that I've been damaged in some way is pretty difficult at this time. I'm not even sure what the complaint entails yet, but so far, I haven't lost anything. If by some travesty she manages to get J. and I expelled, it'll be larger than any small claims court - on the scale of hundreds of thousands of dollars, considering the long-term impact it would have on our careers.
/r/MensRights01/12/17 03:49 AM

I'm sure she believes that, but she also knows she barely did anything. After I sent her an email detailing our grievances with her, she responded by saying J. did 45%, I did 40%, and she did 15%... despite never having edited a single character on the report. She also never discussed anything with us nor did she attend team meetings, so I don't know how else she came up with 15%.

According to her introduction when we were assigned together as a group, if she got an A- or better in the class she would be done. A B/B+ would mean she can still be a student and leaves probationary status, but can't start the thesis. Kind of funny that for the last class between her and the culmination of her MS degree, she did absolutely no work on the single, largest grade of the semester.

To an extent, I can see why she would want to try it. If I was in her shoes, and the system allowed me to abuse innocents to avoid losing everything with no consequence, I would probably do it too. in most places once you live together for around 6 months you're common law I suggest you do some reading. Cohabitation alone typically doesn't establish common-law marriage; you need to have evidence that you plan on marriage (e.g. engaged, or call each other "husband" / "wife"), and your 6-month time frame is pretty much wrong. Additionally, a majority of states do not recognize common-law marriage.

The reason I've heard was they only protected assets pre-marriage. So if you married while on your way up the ladder and saw a lot of success after being married (as many would in their 20s-30s) the assets generated post-marriage would still be up for grabs. That's only partially correct. Prenups can protect assets post-marriage pretty easily, but what you're thinking of is when one person becomes super successful. The problem isn't judges in "shining armor". They aren't being white knights. The problem is in the way our law (and by extension, English Common Law) is structured. Decades of legal precedent dictate who is entitled to support and how much. She felt she deserved child support for the few weekends she had me. She would go on tirades about how unfair it was that she was expected to care for me when my dad wouldn't pay her to do it. She was especially angry when I was a teenager. I would exercise 8+ hours per day and my daily calori…

People change. Very few people ever plan on marrying someone with the intent of divorcing them and taking half of their stuff. The problem with divorce is that, when you decide to do it, you're usually not on good terms. And why not try to get as much as you can out of someone you hate? Aside from a father's rights argument, there's really very little reason to actually marry someone. Mostly just societal pressure.

That's not true at all. If you hire respectable attorneys and make one that's not outrageously restrictive, they can be quite valuable. Even if you limit it entirely to something really simple, say: "The duration of spousal support cannot exceed half the duration of the marriage." ....That's well-worth the few grand it costs. Of course it's not guaranteed. There's still a chance even that would get thrown out. There's also a chance that your insurance company will find evidence of arson when you…

A prenup can be thrown out in quite a number of ways, but the top reasons I hear about (being the son of a family attorney): You try to limit child support. You absolutely cannot do this. You try to limit spousal support too much. You try to add more protections for one party than the other. You deny protections if the other party did something you don't like (e.g. infidelity - "if she cheats, she gets nothing!"). You pressure the other party to sign in any way. One or both parties don't fully u…

There's another benefit, too, that people overlook with unisex bathrooms being the norm: we could take out the dividing wall that's commonly found between men's / women's restrooms and make a bigger bathroom out of it. When you break down marriage with risk analysis or even game theory, it doesn't take much to realize you shouldn't even consider it as a man. There are so few benefits that it just isn't worth it. From my understanding of laws across the pond, it's better to actually go in and apply with a recording device (if legal to do so) than fight it based on the ad alone. She fought for custody for the first 15 years of my life and never got it, but my dad's attorney advised him not to go after child support; doing so may change his image enough to lose custody. We were well off enough that he absolutely didn't need it, but that doesn't make it OK.

If you impregnate a woman, you should marry her and support her and your child. That is your duty as a man. If a woman has a child and gets no support whatsoever from the dude that did it, it's her duty as a woman to find a way to provide for herself and the child. Unfortunately, the most common way they provide is to sue the crap out of their ex and make him double down on his work hours for 20 years. This is possible because people think like you.

Fun little personal story. I applied to the same Silicon Valley company my wife worked at a few years ago when we were starting out. We're both software engineers. She was hired on at $74k. She didn't negotiate at all. When I got an offer from them, the letter stated my salary would be $66k. The job title was the same as my wife's, on the same team, and I had more experience (independent projects). After doing my best to negotiate, they moved up to $71k. If he cares about his son, the cost of the attorney won't matter. If he skimps on the attorney, or doesn't hire one at all, he can kiss custody goodbye. Most attorneys will come to an agreement with you that you just pay what you can comfortably afford. My father runs a law firm and he has several family law cases where the clients have been paying a few hundred a month for 15-20 years. I recommend looking for certified family law specialists. It will be worth the extra money.

Why wouldn't a male non-custodial parent be the default if something happened with the female custodial parent being able to take care of the child? The court has already dealt with the custody situation. We don't know exactly why they granted it to the mother. We don't have the details to say what should happen. End of story. What happens if the reason she won custody is because the father was abusive? What if he's homeless? Though that may be unlikely, it's information the court has - not us. …

I don't think it's a good idea to automatically grant the other parent custody. We don't know jack about the father from this video and assuming that he's automatically a great guy is not something anyone should ever do when it comes to protecting children. The keyword is automatically, though. The court knows the situation much better than we do. As long as the father isn't as bad or worse than this woman, he should get the kid. CPS does need to step in somehow.

In California family law, this is a standard ruling. The reasoning is pretty simple, and it's a really tough situation to fix as a result: child support is purely intended to be for the benefit of the kid. If the kid considers you its father, you're liable for child support if your relationship ends. This usually means that if you've been hanging around while the kid grows up, you've got a kid. You don't have to be married, either. You could just be dating a single mom. Once that kid starts call…

Immediate thought goes to the definition of "mass shooting". IIRC, the feds define it as 4 or more victims, while the most popular "source" for data is a study that defines it as 3 or more victims. On top of that, when the public hears "mass shooting", they usually think about large-scale shootings, i.e. Sandy Hook, which makes these statistics stand out more. Someone going nuts and killing their wife and two kids can be classified as a "mass shooting".

Easy answer is to just not get married. It's easy to simply say that, but reality is a different beast. My wife and I ultimately got married because of pressure from the in-laws. The tl;dr of it is that her parents started demanding we marry or end our 7-year relationship. My wife was on the verge of medicating herself for anxiety because of this - she felt she had to choose either me or her family (if we didn't get hitched), and most people don't have it in them to casually do that. I don't lik…

In California, the paternity test may not even matter at all. tl;dr - if the kid calls you "dad", you are for all intents and purposes the father. You don't even need to be married to be hit with child support, IIRC. If you're the father figure, you're financially responsible. I understand the reasoning behind it - support is for the kid - but this needs to be better known here. Test the kid at birth and get the divorce going before this takes form if the test is negative (unless you want to "wo…

I can't speak for public universities as I didn't attend one, but many of them here will use those donations for non-necessary operational expenses. My alma mater spends donations on new sports facilities, subsidizing travel classes (which are outrageously priced even with that funding), and bringing in guest speakers. However, the bulk of their donation money (according to an old professor, 70% of it) goes towards financial aid / scholarships. That makes a lot of graduates feel warm and fuzzy i…

Just a heads up, silver will tarnish. My wedding band is a mix of 14k white gold and silver. The silver turned black within 3 days of the wedding. I disagree. The age of consent exists to protect minors from agreeing to shit they don't understand the full consequences of. That consists of more than just adult/child relationships. And clearly, this girl did not understand what she was getting herself into. When I was 13, I didn't really understand sex. I knew what it was. I knew I was horny. But I didn't think about STDs / pregnancy / anything like that. "Boobs are cool" was about as far as my thinking went. When I was 16, it was different.…

As someone who was taken out three TROs, I feel that it's worth noting that they are, overall, a benefit. Yes, they can be abused, but there's a reason why they're so easy to get: going through a court for a full restraining order is often a drawn-out process and a TRO acts as a small safety net in the meantime. They can be filed without your knowledge. This is misleading. It's not like you come home one day and get arrested. You have to be served with the TRO. Someone representing the court has…

I would agree with a verdict against him if (and only if) it can be proved that the two of them were having sex. The arrest and bringing him to court makes sense given that there's a known romantic history. Even if he's not the father but still having sex with her, it's still rape, and has nothing to do with gender, since he's above the age of consent and she isn't.

I am a feminist in the sense that the word means "equal rights (and treatment) for women." The problem is that the popular movements find "injustices" all the time that are anecdotal at best and more often than not are imagined or exaggerated. I find it amusing that the age of consent is 18 in most states. Given that the average age for women to lose their virginity is 16.9 and men is 17.3 (according to some... Especially with e-commerce and digital distribution on systems now, there's very little we can do to prevent the purchase of age-inappropriate games. I think the more convincing argument is that it has practically no health benefits, contrary to what popular belief is. For the same reason we don't remove the appendix at birth, there's no reason to remove the foreskin. (Actually, removing the appendix would statistically be more beneficial)

The use of "his" as a pronoun for an unknown gender shouldn't bother anyone who has studied any other (Western) language. Making it into a sexism talking point is a quibble over political correctness and doesn't actually further any causes. I don't particularly like the use of "their" to remain gender-neutral since it's a plural form, but I think it's far more natural to read than alternatives such as "he or she" or "s/he".

Assuming you're in the U.S., if you didn't waive community property rights formally in an agreement, it doesn't matter if you have "your own" stuff. Even if you ultimately prove to a court "I only took stuff that we had agreed was mine - she never uses my TurboBuff 9000 after all", the fact that she can make you fight over it can cost more than replacing it. I'd gladly lose four monitors before losing components. My desktop ran me $1400 when I built it, but it's not even the cost I would care about. I'm pretty careful with my data. I have a RAID 1 for my important stuff and I have an external as a backup, too, that I keep at my office. However, my wife knows this, and she could do some pretty irreversible damage if she destroyed all of my drives.
/r/MensRights07/01/15 10:04 PM

I would put money on it that she only damaged the monitors. I've worked in IT for quite a while and I saw damaged screens a lot (including a drunk roommate blasting mine to smithereens) - it seems pretty consistent here. Not saying it couldn't be a video card issue, but I just think it's unlikely.

The time was in case I had to move my stuff to storage to protect it, if needed. That could be dangerous in and of itself. If you didn't get a prenup that waives community property rights, she could easily use the defense of "he stole our stuff and hid it in some public storage locker so I couldn't have it". Then, instead of doing a couple hundred / thousand dollars worth of physical damage, you might have a massively negative point to contest in court, which could be drastically more expensive.…

The MRM can be traced back to the mid-19th century. According to you, MRM could not possibly have been working toward egalitarianism at that time. Maybe this is what you do believe, but I'm just pointing it out so you're aware that to be consistent, you do have to demonize the history of this movement. That being said, there are plenty of places women do face prejudice just because they have tits. An easy experiment: make a fake online dating profile with a semi-attractive photo of a woman and w…

Tumblr feminism != ideals of feminism. If you're going to compare the terms in their bare forms, feminism and masculinism are two sides of the same coin. Their goal is egalitarianism but the focus is shifted on the respective sexes and issues they face. As for the interpretations common movements like to fight for, that's a different story. OP decided to go for dictionary-style definitions, though.
/r/MensRights25/12/14 12:58 AM

MRA and feminism are two sides of the same coin. Any true member of either movement wants equality between the sexes. However, in much the same way that feminism doesn't focus on our issues, we don't focus on theirs. Anyone with any real sense of reason will say that feminism is garbage, as is masculinism. The one word we should embrace is egalitarianism. Unfortunately, with the way politics are structured, the only way to make any progress to focus one one group of people at a time. Those of us who wish to further both movements are usually forced into silence because we're not fully on board with either "movement", despite the fact that definition changes depending on who you're talking to.
