Yes it is. I'm trying to re-program my mind to consider working out and eating paleo (well 80/20 at least, but no wheat) as non-negotiable priorities somewhere up there with breathing and using the bathroom.

You've hit it right on the nose there. Not that I don't know what the words mean, but I think that I have been conflating motivation with self-discipline. It's self-discipline that keeps you doing the shit that every fiber of your being does not want to do. And self-discipline has never been one of my strong points. So that's something I need to really focus on for a while. Thank you for making that distinction clear for me.

This will yank the rug out from under those who use excuses because they haven't given up the teenage habits of laziness and pleasure-seeking. Those juvenile tendencies, while comfortable, are anti-RP. Yeah, I've really been working at breaking myself of the constant need to be entertained and I'm not even one of "those kids today" - - I'm 41. I have become very aware just how many of my "leisure activities" essentially boiled down to media consumption. I inherited my dad's guitars last year, an…

That's pretty much how I feel too. Things tend to get added to my to-do list faster than I can check them off. Part of it is learning to be better at saying "no" when other people want you to do something. I'm still learning this. For me, the most important thing is to prioritize my own health above anything that I "have to do." When I'm being fairly strict about sticking to a paleo diet and consistently hitting the gym 3-4 times per week, I feel like a completely different person. I have more e…

I still struggle with maintaining this mindset. I'll be owning it for a week or two, then I'll start backsliding because I just can't seem to find that spark of energy in myself to push through feeling overwhelmed and exhausted. My motivation just seems to evaporate when I get that tired. I'm sure that you must have gone through periods of time where you felt exhausted and unmotivated. What did you do to get that fire burning again? Sometimes, I've been able to pull out of that tailspin by just …

Completely agree with this. I started eating paleo-style back in 2011, and it completely changed my life. I lost about 40 lbs over the following 8 months, going from a size 36 down to a size 32. My acid reflux went away, and what I thought was some sort of chronic sinusitis was actually an allergy to wheat and cow dairy. My energy level also stayed constant throughout the day. I also no longer got light-headed if I went more than two hours without eating. But the most surprising thing was how it…

After reading this yesterday, I set up an HST routine for myself and gave it a try last night. It was fucking brutal. I was used to doing the Starting Strength routines, and I used a online calculator to estimate my 15rm and 10rm from the 5 rep sets that I was doing before. Some of those sets of 15 really took the wind out of me (squats and deadlifts in particular). I've struggled with repetitive strain injuries in my arms, neck, and back for many years now (I'm a programmer); it's been worse th…

I think there is a difference between asking "is your neck sore today" and "how are you feeling today?" It's hard to put my finger on, but I do see a difference. Perhaps because the first one is focused, while the second is easily interpreted as a roundabout away of asking "is there anything you want me to do for you?" I think that it may come across as needy on your part, especially if you're checking on her multiple times. If you can tell that she hasn't slept well, do something that saves her…

I think my wife is both dismissive-avoidant and fearful-avoidant at the same time. :-P

I still struggle with keeping the momentum going and not getting complacent when the shit tests subside for a while. The most helpful things for me are keeping up with my workouts and continuing to read (and re-read) post on forums like this, The Rational Male, MMSL, etc. Working out helps me have the confidence I need to push back and the mental clarity to deliver a good response and not get sucked into an argument. Reading various red pill material helps keep me from slipping back into my old,…

Absolutely agree with letting her be the one to leave the bedroom. I was basically a "Career Beta" all of my life, and even before I got completely unplugged, I was refusing to sleep somewhere else just because she was pissy. Odds are pretty good that she won't actually leave the bedroom when it comes down to it.
