Here's the clip with timelink: https://youtu.be/cTKulCpWiUY?t=46m15s Unfortunately the audio is very difficult to hear. What I heard in the auditorium (on the night) was that she is a feminist or does identify as a feminist or what not - I did hear her make the statement in the affirmative. It is possible that I misheard, but I don't believe I did.

At the Toronto screening last Friday, there was a panel + question period. A woman asking a question opened by saying that she identifies herself as a feminist; she was met with a round of applause.

I was hoping to find that graph in your second point - thanks for the find! The analysis I'd find more interesting - and that I'll need to find time to look at later - is how reasons & rates of not reporting compare to those of other violent crimes.

Having come across the infographic, I've been digging into it a bit tonight. I haven't come across any egregious methodological errors. In the social sciences, however, I'm generally cautious of statistics derived from multiple chained-together layers of inference. Here's Johnson's paper - this is the full PDF of the infographic's cited source, on the YWCA website. I noticed that it cites Koss as background. The numbers for the infographic are summarized on page 19 of this PDF; note that these a…

I point to Jessica Valenti, in her "I bathe in male tears" sweater, and I ask "Where's your article in the Guardian saying that's not okay? Could you point me to the feminist blogging site you co-founded, where this behaviour was denounced?" The first is about her influence in society. The second is about her influence in feminism. Jessica Valenti has more influence in both, usually, than the speaker, and she says it's okay for feminists to mock celebrate male suffering.

Not sure if this line is in the movie, but from the play: In an ordinary crime, how does one defend the accused? One calls up witnesses to prove his innocence. But witchcraft is ipso facto, on its face and by its nature, an invisible crime, is it not? Therefore, who may possibly be witness to it? The witch and the victim. None other. Now we cannot hope the witch will accuse herself; granted? Therefore, we must rely upon her victims - and they do testify, the children certainly do testify. As for…

The point I was trying to make was that this article doesn't hit on the strongest rights-based arguments we've got. It chooses "more research into this and that" rather than "look at the law; women have these rights, men do not."

Yeah, having to register for the draft isn't a problem in peacetime. Say, did you know that the Ukraine still had a draft, and by the end of this year, they were going to have switched to an all-volunteer army? They were. Now, with the problems with Russia, that's not happening.

I know feminism is not a monolith. The point I'm trying to make to you is that it's unfair to treat any group as a monolith. The MRM is smaller, but also diverse, and not a monolith. Look at the diversity of opinions on this subreddit, which is just one of the MRA communities. Saying this is a community that condones filing false rape reports is a gross oversimplification. There's a difference between filing one false report in an attempt to hurt a particular someone, and filing a large number o…

No, some people here were involved. We shouldn't hide from the responsibility. -sillymod If you think it hasn't even been publicly acknowledged, you aren't paying attention. There isn't yet a consensus here on whether filing such reports was a good idea or a bad one. In any case, if you assume all 400 reports were filed by /r/MensRights subscribers, none by 4chan, and each person who filed a false report filed only one, then 0.4% of the subreddit is responsible.

I used to consider myself a feminist ally. It was a very one-sided relationship with their movement. Of course, I'm sure the feminist response to such a list would be to say that all these people are "self-proclaimed" feminists, as they've said about Warren Farrell, of all people.

I don't know how CAFE would get the resources available to mount a legal case, though they might have one. Whether or not universities are subject to the Charter is rather murky, and the only clear answer seems to be that it depends on the university, and in what capacity the university is acting at the time. Another thing: http://www.rainn.org/get-information/statistics/sexual-assault-victims The NCVS, which they also cite on the page of stats you analyzed, uses a definition of rape that excludes almost all male victims, and almost all female perpetrators. Rape, as defined by the NCVS, is forced sexual intercourse. Forced sexual intercourse means vaginal, oral, or anal penetration by offender(s). Requires that the offender penetrate and the victim be penetrated.

I think it's moreso a reflection of the diversity of feminist views than an attempt by feminism as a whole to shut down all such conversations. Moreso the former, not entirely the former. I think it's a more general problem with how Reddit works. Downvotes are supposed to be for comments that do not add to the conversation. Upvotes are supposed to be for comments that do. Even people who follow good reddiquette tend to no-vote good posts that they disagree with. Then people with bad reddiquette downvote those posts, and the result is a negative score. I'm talking about abortion laws, not a particular case of whether or not a woman has an abortion. In the countries I mentioned, women are more likely than men to favor increases on abortion restrictions. People who are pro-choice shouldn't argue that men should keep their mouths shut on abortion, because doing so discards the majority of the people who agree with the pro-choice position.

In Canada and the UK, at least, "Men should not have a say in abortion laws" should be considered a pro-life argument. In the UK, abortions are currently legal up until the 24th week. UK: Women (58%) are much more likely than men (33%) to call for a reduction of the 24-week period. In Canada, there are absolutely no legal restrictions on abortion, though after 20 or 24 weeks, you'll have problems finding a doctor that will perform the procedure without extenuating circumstances. Canada: However,…

Prominent voices in the movement, like Paul Elam, Toy Soldiers, and statements issued by CAFE, have publicly denounced any use of violence or threats of violence, by anyone, for any purpose. I've considered maintaining a gaming blog, where I track which game I'm playing, how many men I've killed in the game, and how many women I've killed in the game. This would be done while trying to play the game as effectively as possible. For example, in Just Cause 2, there is no advantage to killing civilians, so I would avoid doing so. Since civilians are the only killable female characters, the my female:male kill ration is about 400:1. I can think of only one game, involving violence, that …

And just to be clear: Warren Farrell's crime against feminism was admitting that token resistance is something that sometimes happens in mating, but even still, if a woman says no, you should take it as a no. Hugo Schwyzer's crime was trying to murder his ex-girlfriend. According to mainstream feminism, Warren Farrell is not to be allowed to speak at a university (the place for the free exchange of ideas). Hugo Schwyzer gets to be a leader of the L.A. Slutwalk.

This is an excellent post. I would add that the talks that CAFE are hosting are all recorded in full, and the videos are posted, unedited, to Youtube. There's a big difference between modern feminist theory, as practiced and discussed in the university classrooms, and boots-on-the-ground feminism, that lobbies for changes in law, runs ad campaigns, makes blog posts from influential platforms like Jezebel, and protests CAFE and the University of Toronto. No, I don't think that's actually what's happening. However, if you have a course that frames women as the oppressed class, and men as the privileged class, there's a problem. I don't think it's fair to equate all government/legal regulation, censure, or action with violence. Lawsuits require that the claims of both parties be tested in court. Even if the result is the death penalty, there are certain safeguards built-in, the defendant has rights, there are rules that must be followed, and standards of evidence that must be met. I have problems with how the legal system tends to work, but let's not throw away the baby with the bathwater.

Many feminists lean in the direction of "you should man up and ask anyway even if that means you lose your chance" JUST IN CASE you MIGHT be raping someone without you even knowing. It strikes me as just a little unfair to the man, and fairly demeaning to women since the implication is, "You can't trust women to tell you how they really feel, so you should go above and beyond into the realm of social awkwardness to keep her accountable for her actions because she's incapable of doing it herself,…

This is at least part of why some jurisdiction (eg Canada) do not use "rape" as a legal term. They instead have various severities of "sexual assault." "Sexual assault" is similar to your definition: When one person sexually touches another person despite knowing that they're not consenting (or are incapable of consenting). Of course, that includes many things that are not good, and should be punished, but that also aren't rape.

The point I'm making is that there are a wealth of situations where "but how can this be rape because TEETH" doesn't hold up. It takes very little imagination to think of a situation where TEETH isn't a safe or feasible response to oral rape. Like having a gun to one's head. Or being drunk, or drugged. Or unconscious. Or under threat of violence; or one's loved ones (eg children) are under threat of violence. Or just being attacked by someone who can and has physically overpowered you, and is pr…

That's the argument people make. I like to tell them this: In that sentence, he uses the pronoun 'we.' Who do you think 'we' refers to? See, I've read the rest of the page, the paragraph before, the paragraph after. It seems quite clear to me that 'we' is 'our society in general.' 'We' is 'traditional gender expectations and gender roles.' 'We' is, if I understand the feminist term correctly, similar to 'the patriarchy.' He doesn't hold this opinion. He is reporting on this opinion.

Convincing the public matters. There are some aspects of traditional gender roles/expectations that feminists were able to count on to get away with this sort of rhetoric: Men's feelings don't matter. It's not abuse when a woman does it. Men are motivated only by sex, so calling them pigs is okay. Women are emotional/irrational, so give them leniency. etc. Those same things can be used against us, if we use similar rhetoric. We take the high road because it is the right thing to do, the smart th…

What's more, it uses a narrative common to both mainstream society and mainstream feminism: that of male hyperagency and female hypoagency. Under this narrative, men have so much free will that they are responsible not only for their own actions, but also for the actions of others. Women, however, have so little free will that they are not responsible for their own actions.

This is a very important video. It really shows you what it was like being in the room. Also keep in mind that this video is filmed from the second row of seats. This video needs to be intercut with footage of the protestors, their threats, their supporters (CUPE, UTSU, etc) and their allegations. Ideally time-synced. Then that video needs to be the response to every denunciation of MRAs made by feminists who have not publicly denounced these protestors.

We are concerned less with history, and moreso with the state of society today. Activism must look forward, not backward. Power is more complex than who sits in the government. When we live in a democracy, where 51% of the ballots cast are cast by women, and those ballots determine who sits in the government, the issue is more complex than a narrative that says men have all the power. Yes, men disproportionately achieve higher status. They also, however, disproportionately achieve lower status. …

Let's keep in mind as we discuss this how wide the term "sexual assault" is, under most definitions. In India, modern feminism has successfully opposed attempts to make the rape of men a crime. This isn't historic, this isn't a few decades old. This is from this month. After Canada launched a “Don’t be that guy” consent awareness campaign in 2011, the sexual assault rate dropped for the first time in years — by 10 percent. The city they're talking about is Vancouver. Running the exact same campaign in Edmonton saw sexual assault rates go up. Sexual assault rates are dependent on many factors, making it difficult to determine why rates change, when they change.

The quotation only has one statistic in it to discuss; the rest is anecdotal evidence. "The average prison sentence for men who kill their intimate partners is 2 to 6 years. Women who kill their partners are sentenced, on average, to 15 years. (17)" 1) Click on the link in that article to the source, The Michigan Women’s Justice & Clemency Project. 2) Find footnote 17. A feminist friend of mine recently posted this: "Feminism does mean I'm angry all the time, but at least I'm not wondering what's wrong with me." I don't have feminism, so for a long time, I wondered what was wrong with me, believing such absurd things as 'men have gender issues too.' The MRM gives me some assurance that perhaps, I am not batshit insane.

Sounds like a reasonable rate. My jurisdiction has been tracking what rate of sexual assault accusations are demonstrably false, and finding 5% fit that description. At the other end, there is the small number of accusations that lead to a conviction, and in between, a large number where there is insufficient evidence to know either way.

I don't like AVFM for exactly this reason. I think it's terrible to have a website where women get to put up the names, faces, and addresses of men on the basis of some accusation, without giving the accused a chance to defend himself, or the protection of anonymity. I think Paul Elam does too. The thing is, I'd respond by saying 'that's bad', and he'd respond by saying 'that's bad, let me do the same thing to show you how bad it feels.' It's effective, and I'm okay with it as a one-time rhetori…

I think the most important quotations for debunking various myths, or asking for inclusion in anti-violence campaigns, and unless trying to win a game of Oppression Olympics, are these: In 2008, overall rates of police-reported violent victimization were comparable between men and women, but the nature of their victimization differed. Male victims were most often physically assaulted by a stranger or by someone else outside of the family. In 2008, men were the victims of 80% of all reported atta…

Disclaimer so I only have to say it once: This post only represents my views and those of whoever upvotes this, and does not necessarily reflect those of the entire movement or subreddit. Why impede their performance by making them worry about an oppressive culture while they worry about others' safety? The needs of the people who aren't on the front lines are irrelevant? Of course they're relevant. They're in a job where they're expected to handle difficult, dangerous, even traumatic situations, and/or to support those who do. One of the citations on Wikipedia refers to Jean-Claude Rochefort, who was charged under Canadian hate speech laws, but from what I've been able to find, found not guilty on the grounds that such laws apply only to minorities, and women were ruled not a minority. I found what I think is his blog (last updated 2009), but I'd rather not link to it here. He calls himself a masculist. I do like the overall sentiment of your piece, but I have a few things I'd like to point out: Father: Yes, Mother: No. I don't think the possibility of mental health issues resulting from a father having his child aborted against his wishes outweighs the physical and mental health risks (including post-partum depression) associated with a pregnancy. Father: No, Mother: Yes. This is where I want changes in the law, and I think that's a common sentiment in this community. Sex without contraceptive…

Upvoted. Sorry, I don't think I communicated well in my last paragraph there. You're right, there's a big difference between what people are told about preventing their own rapes and preventing their own murders. I think there's still an element of that with murder, with muggings, and the OP is reporting this happening to him. What I was trying to say was that if people are addressing the problem with rape prevention messages, but not addressing a similar problem with murder prevention messages,…

I don't care for the word 'dickhead;' gendered insult and all that. I'll be replacing it with 'unkind' below. Telling a joke that makes anyone uncomfortable is being unkind to that person. Telling a joke that makes many people uncomfortable is unkind to many people; if those people are your coworkers, now it's unprofessional, too. Failing to modify our customs and morals to whatever makes people the most comfortable is being unkind. Crazy89, if men's well-being, comfort, freedom, and camaraderie…

You have pointed out an hypocrisy. You're being told by feminists(?) that rapists, not their victims, are responsible for rape. You're also being told, by mainstream society, that mugging victims are responsible for their muggings. The thing is - and if my interpretation of your experience is wrong, please say so - these messages are coming from two different sources. If the same people putting up the anti-rape posters start telling you you're responsible for making sure you aren't mugged, then …

Actually, it does. Most statistics on rape are gathered from either police reports, or surveys of various kinds. Statistics gathered from police reports will have whatever biases the police do, but more importantly, do not include any crime that is not reported to the police. Statistics gathered from surveys are more varied. The weakest just survey women who responded to a poster put up on a college campus. It would therefore only represent the situation at that campus, only the type of women th…

Let's not free men by oppressing women, as requiring them to sign up for Selective Service would do (it would also do little to free men). Abolish the whole damned thing. No requirements for Selective Service registration. If a country needs more soldiers, it should get them by inspiration and moral authority, not by force and coercion.

I agree that there are many kinds of feminism; maybe I should've used the plural form 'feminisms' more. There are also many kinds of MRAs. I'm not anti-feminist, but nor am I pro-feminist. Feminism is a huge and nebulous thing; the word means so many different things to so many different people, I'd have to ask for a definition before picking pro or anti, and even then, it would apply only to that definition. The only thing I have to add to this is that any movement that looks primarily at the issues of one gender, and not the other, is going to attract misogynists/misandrists. Feminists will tend to be better at pointing out the misogyny in the MRM, and MRAs will tend to be better at pointing out the misandry in feminism. However, feminists have a lot more 'feminist cred', and MRAs have more 'MRM cred.' So once the sexism is pointed out, it would help these two communities to communicate and coopera…

So, they say that the study used a test designed by Hogrefe Implicity. He's best known for the Implicit Association Test (IAT). In theory, the IAT is a tool for measuring subconscious biases; not conscious biases, not biases in behaviour; subconscious biases. Biases that people have that they are (usually) not aware of. The whole point of the tool is to seek out biases that are not blatant, that are cognitive only, not behavioural. The thing is, some people may be aware that they possess these b…

"Inconclusive" usually means "not statistically significant," which, in turn, usually means "as far as our study's results go, we are less than 95% certain that there is a difference between these two groups." So if those 'usuallys' are the case here, then the researchers were less than 95% certain that overweight men are percieved differently than other men. If you want to know how they arrive at their percentage of certainty, that's a long explanation - the short answer is "the branch of mathe…

You can cite the second study and say "it's 50/50, but male victims are less likely to report the violence to the police." Not directly related to the wage gap, but when I expr…

That's great that you have those resources. In most jurisdictions though, if a father loses his job, his child support payments remain unchanged. If he gets a new job that pays less, the same goes. If he gets a new job that pays more though, the payments go up. The #1 cause of unpaid child support is being unable to pay. But that's not even the issue. I have some thoughts on why men are more likely to complete suicide, but not evidence; it is generally difficult to ask the dead why they killed themselves (suicide notes aside). The male gender role says: Do not have feelings. If you must have feelings, be ashamed, and do not express them. If you must express them, be more ashamed, and do not cry. For men/women being pro-life, it depends on the question and the place. For example, in the UK, abortions are legal before 24 weeks.
