I have one friend and a brother (who's a psychiatrist) who I share with, and everyone gets a very cursory status update whenever they ask. I did a bunch of dating 1-5 dates with 6-7 women over the first seven months after filing for divorce and it was really helpful. Getting dressed up. Getting out of the house. Getting my conversation skills sharp. Feeling desired. All helpful. And after about 7 months I ended up dating a woman who I'm still seeing. 100% agree on kids.

I’m dating a hot younger woman and it’s the best relationship of my life (for many reasons not just “hotness.”) I attribute most of that to being sober for three years and finally being emotionally available. Anyway things are actually great.

Literally going through this now. I compiled a pdf 6 months of emails and texts and uploaded it ChatGPT. I asked it to analyze communication patterns between us. Now every time I communicate, I write it first and paste into the SAME THREAD. It recalls earlier communication and patterns. If I let ChatGPT generate the whole reply, it’s too soft so my draft is important I asked it to edit my work for clarity, record preservation and prioritize clear boundaries and firm timelines. Its definitely fru…

Narcissistic personality disorder is a real thing and ~1% of the population has it. Great example of the pernicious way interpersonal language has become so medicalized. They use narcissist as an ad hominem slur because they think it makes them sound smarter and more reasonable than just calling us assholes.

There are no circumstances I would prefer her death to divorce. Non-starter.

I’m so grateful to be going through this in Florida where 50/50 is the default.

Personality disorders are defined by their atypical behavior. By definition, narcissists are uncommon. Only 2% of humans are narcissists. Instead of narcissist, sociopath, and gaslighter they should stick to “asshole.” That’s what they mean and it’s usually more accurate .

I went through AA recovery, one-on-one talk therapy, and worked with a psychiatrist. I found limitations to each but that they worked together comprehensively. TBH 12 step recovery was the most impactful, not just because I stopped drinking, but because the steps helped me confront resentments and dishonesty. Highly recommend

I’ve conceived of child support as money i was already obligated to. Csn you add some context?

I’ve been positively stunned by how fair Florida is. Our approach should be the default for the country. Custody defaults to 50/50. Assets default to 50% from time of marriage. Alimony is reasonable and 50% of duration of the marriage

There was certainly a context over years and some fundamental communication challenges that preceded my bad choices, but ultimately I destroyed my life and hers. I also was the one who filed. As someone in recovery, I focus only on how I contributed to a situation. It’s a valuable way to reduce resentments and focus on healing.

It will decrease divorce because it will reduce the number and rates of marriage. That’s the most likely outcome

Very fortunate to live in Florida, which has quite fair laws IMHO. Your proposal’s, however, will drastically decrease the number of marriages and will create dramatic unintended consequences (suffering children)

Well, if she’s escalating I think that would make some decisions a little easier. When someone tells you who they are, believe them. I wish you all the best. I’m glad my divorce hasn’t gotten to that point.

I strongly recommend you see a therapist to process all this as it goes on. It’s sounds like she was, a minimum, volatile and verbally abusive. You need to process your complicated emotions about this in order to have some way to approach the future. I would strongly recommend NOT acting in haste about dropping charges. You have gained leverage because of this event and you need to use it the most valuable way. Is that seeking full custody? Or 50/50 when you might have only had visitations? You …

I’m in North Florida, so yes geography could be a big factor. Though I grew up in NJ and Philly so quite familiar with NYC and the region

Your experiences dating do not match mine. I’ve found that 12 step work and therapy helped me work through my resentments and fears. It’s possible to find peace again after divorce.

I agree with everyone who says to underreact to this. I can assure you your Ex was THRILLED that you reacted because that’s exactly what her intention was If you want to win this encounter, i would strongly suggest that you react to her like she’s a lifetime employee of the DMV. She’s the wallpaper. Just totally boring and banal.

If anything in this life is certain. If history has taught us anything it’s that you can kill anyone.

It’s the opposite of a blanket statement. My only point is that there are a lot of men who bear some responsibility for the failure of their marriage. That’s not to absolve our partners. But being ruthlessly honest with ourselves is essential to healing and moving on.
