I’m talking about playing the long game here and being smart

The point is to set yourself up for success before you even mention the D word to her. Set cash aside. Take in interest in “lottery tickets” if asked about it. You may not have the cash funds. But if your wife isn’t able to get a grip on reality (serial cheater won’t be able to) you’re looking at extensive credit card debt to pay for the fallout.

Squirrel away the amount of money equal to what she has spent on APs. Other wise you will almost certainly never recuperate those funds. Wait until you have that accomplished, then move forward with the divorce. Set a precedent that you are each contributing X amount toward child’s college fund, come up with a plan for how to pay for that equally and fairly (prior to requesting divorce). Then that amount and plan can be used with the divorce terms so that you don’t get swindled, paying for more …

Don’t use the separate 4500 you have set aside. You’re able to use joint funds for your divorce lawyer/mediator/whatever retainer - use joint funds and keep that 4500 squirreled away for emergencies.

In my experience. Lawyers say “wait this out. Don’t worry. We can fix it later” and proceed to NEVER hold up to those promises. You are the only one looking out for you, that lawyer is looking out for their pay check. Take ALL of your valuables and put them in a secure place. Take out cash or transfer funds from the joint account to cover all joint bills for 3 months. She abandoned the house. DO NOT LET HER BACK IN. She can drag the court date out and drag out signing any agreements, leaving you…

She’ll get a bigger chunk of the house sale as she will have paid into the equity each month. Typically she will get in the house sale, what she has paid toward the principal on the house. If you can pay half of the principal payments in those 4 years, that’s worth it. You’re not paying the interest but still get equal parts in the sale of the house. Also depends on who your ex is as a person, is she going to want upgrades to the house in that time and expect you to pay half? Is she going to tre…

Cumulative with the excise tax bill, credit card, and joint account we’re discussing 20K+

Would the excise tax be listed on the tax return if it was an out of state property?

State is MA. She spent down every dime of our 40K joint account, fraudulently charged 600$ on my credit card. We owe about 5K in back taxes now on the excise taxes.

Your wife is a psychologist? That means she’s using every trick in the book so she has the upper hand. I agree discovery will be hell. Try to gather statements, make sure you have a copy of previous taxes to understand her retirement account values etc. Do NOT leave the house. Force 50/50 custody. You would probably receive child support and depending on state alimony. Alimony doesn’t end at your children turning 18, that’s child support and even in some states that child support can be extended…

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
