You asked for what it looked like to have men's emotions shut down. MelissaMiranti shared a very good list of what it looks like. I want to respond to the idea that it's just women shutting men's emotions down. That absolutely happens, but that was not my personal experience. I have much more often been shut down by other men. Today, I have a chosen family that supports emotional vulnerability, and they tend to be women at the moment. However, we don't have to super-impose our personal experienc…

We’re going for gold in the oppression Olympics, but not with that attitude!

I wonder if the comparison still holds though? Patriarchy doesn't exist in a cultural vacuum; it interacts with other forms of prejudice. Men are disposable under Patriarchy - but only if they are poor. My culture does almost nothing to help homeless men; but we are so deferential to powerful men, that we are convinced that we are "stealing" from the billionaires by asking them to pay more taxes. Conscription into the military was considered good for young men; unless those young men are wealthy…

I appreciate the question. We are all harmed by oppression. For people within groups of privilege, we are impacted less directly; but there are indirect ways that we suffer. White Supremacy hurts White people, because it causes White people to prioritize their racial in-group, instead of having class-consciousness. That's thousands of White men fought for the Confederacy to protect the right of their rich, slave-owning neighbors to have slaves. It's why labor unions have struggled in the South; …

We can read newspapers from the early 1900's lamenting how boys were not as masculine as the generation before them. It's an age-old lie for rich men in power justify their extortion of young people's labor; because it helps them develop "masculine virtue." We can choose to end this misandrist lie in our generation.

I am sorry you have been circumcised. It's never OK. However, I do want to offer a few perspectives that I found helpful for coming to terms with my own circumcision. No man has the perfect penis. We have all kinds of penises: big, small, curved, straight, thick, narrow, cut or intact. I have never personally encountered a woman complaining that their partner is circumcised. We've lost the most sensitive part of our penis, but our neurons adapt and re-organize. I remember reading about studies t…

That's a horrifying statement. Rape is an act of power over someone - it doesn't have qualifiers on it. Once you start putting qualifiers on what constitutes rape, it excuses the grossest kinds of behavior.

Looking at examples you give of homophobia: “ Kicking men in the balls in an attempt to feminize them, calling men pussies or gay.” These people think that feminizing you is an insult. That’s patriarchal attitudes that believes being female is inferior to maleness. There’s nothing remotely feminist about insulting you by comparing you to females. I don’t attribute every petty insult to feminism; unless you also want me to attribute your double standard on homophobia to patriarchy.
/r/MensRights19/05/26 07:46 AM

OP is not calling out feminism explicitly; he’s referring to misandrist women. Homophobia is one of the defining features of patriarchy, so it doesn’t make sense to me that OP is directing strays at feminist thought. I will concede though, that it’s a tired trope on this sub that equates feminism with all misandry. I am super-confused, though, that OP says every women he’s met is misandrist; but male microagressions are not real homophobia.

Saying patriarchy doesn't exist anywhere the modern era minimizes my experience growing up in patriarchal religious culture that had a lot of its own fucked up messages about masculinity. The ideas in this post are too under-baked to be used as reference for all future participants on this sub.

Not exactly. My point - which I did not explain well - was that many of the men who put women on a pedestal are actually engaging in a form of objectification. We can discuss this in more detail if you like. However, I still don't understand how being called an "ally" is problematic for anybody. I am not Trans; I am not Black; I am not a Palestinian. Yes, He is racist towards Black people. However, racial dynamics don’t map perfectly onto gender dynamics. If I, as a White man, think Asians and Jews are such a smart race of people, then I am engaging in the racism of framing them as a model minority. The model minority myth devalues the hard work of individuals of those races; and it’s usually used as a cudgel to dismiss the oppression experienced by other racial groups.

Thank you for saying this out loud. This is absurd, I am surprised that the mods are ok with it. I am pro-porn, but clearly abuse is happening in some videos. How much abuse is actually happening seems to be the main sticking point. But outright comparing abuse to writing spicey fiction is so callous and creepy. We would never tolerate people minimizing male abuse in this manner.

Military inventions don’t necessarily improve the quality of life. I deeply appreciate subtext; although I do my best to frame it as interpretation. Here are some reasons why any person might be afraid to go out that are NOT violent crime: * Sexual harassment * If they feel physically weaker * If they have already experienced sexual assault. * If they have been taught their whole life to not go out at night alone (and if they did, whatever happened to them would be partially their own fault). Statement B1 is definitely dismissive. Obviously, a conversation like this doesn't occur in a vacuum. There was probably some level of distrust going into it. Let's break this down logically; and then break it down emotionally. A1. Women have more fear of going out at night compared to men. Because we have no other context, this is the initial proposition of fact. It's a possibly true statement about the subjective experience of fear. B1. Men experience more violent crime than do women. The title of the article is dishonest on multiple level. First, it's misandrist. It plays into the harmful narrative that men are not valid victims. It's upsetting to see misandry so prominently in this incredibly sad topic of Cumbria having twice the suicide rate as the national average. The title is also incredibly dishonest by placing the quotes around the statement "women are more affected by suicide." It gives the impression that they are citing somebody; but they made it up. Monopolization happens naturally in capitalist economies. It’s the Achilles heel of the system. Another feature of healthcare is that there is bargaining power gap and expertise gap between providers and consumers. However, government corruption doesn’t help.

I am writing from a U.S. perspective. Capitalists like that we suffer emotionally, because they can then sell us the cure. It’s important to remember that Patriarchy does not exist to advance the interests of all men. It’s just one of the many tools of power wielded by the ruling class. Other tools include racism, nationalism, colonialism, and wealth transfer. In as much as we participate in misandry or misogyny, we are amplifying the power of our oppressors. I think the phrasing is indicative of her target audience. To me, it sounds like she is asking a TERF audience to dial back their misandry. That audience assumes that male on female violence is the primary social problem; and Hooks is directing their attention to the invisible emotional violence that men suffer in a patriarchal worldview. Even the Crenshaw’s piece may make more sense if it’s interpreted as writing to a predominantly White feminist movement to acknowledge that racism exists.

I don’t have any issue with Bell Hooks statement. “The first act of violence that patriarchy demands of males is not violence toward women. Instead patriarchy demands of all males that they engage in acts of psychic self-mutilation, that they kill off the emotional parts of themselves.” That is exactly what I experienced growing up. That is not how I interpreted that statement. I think that an Intersectionalist would say it’s reductive to ascribe all social ills to one category of people. It’s all additive. Whatever baseline of domestic violence that there would have been is made worse by stress and pressures of racism. I also don’t think it’s excusing. I am not sure where the disconnect is here. I agree with you that being a man doesn’t make your life better than being born a woman. NOT all men are better off than all women. Where have I compared ALL men to the ONLY those at the top? Did I claim that you have power? I 100% agree that wealth is the much more important social division than gender. Not listening to Sean Hannity does not answer my question. Clearly you’ve changed your mind since 2nd grade; since you now think Leftists view you as sub-human. Saying that you were viewed as “sub-human” is a pretty extreme experience. Men are doing just fine in Leftist spaces from where I sit. Is being viewed as “sub-human” something you personally experienced in your community, or is that your current perception of Leftist politics generally?

Wealth is the product of labor. That you can be working poor in the wealthiest societies in history is a result of one thing: owners have taken an eye-watering portion of the value of your labor. The problem isn't democracy, or taxes, or minorities. Those are the distractions that the Capitalists dangle over you. Capitalists are vampires of human productivity. I think it's OK to approach Men's Rights from a Conservative angle or a Leftist angle. There are fundamental things we both sides can agree to about male issues. I just get annoyed at all the Conservative-slanted fluff whose only connection to Men's Rights is that the person hurt was a man. Or the lazy Youtube slop that keeps getting posted here. Since we're venting, can we stop posting many-year-old stories about teachers abusing students?

Yes. I am curious why you didn't answer my question, because I think this sub complains about toxic femininity all the time. Obviously, not all femininity is toxic; but there is toxic behavior that calls itself "femininity." What else are we supposed to call that? This sub trains men to see criticism of toxic behavior that calls itself "masculinity" as an attack on all men - but that is not why the term was created.

Why are you defensive instead of curious? Rape Shield laws are not even close to the Duluth model. The law is not gendered; it protects victims of any gender. In any criminal Cases, the character of the accused is often what is on trial. Prosecution and Defense both present character evidence about the accused. Right? The term was co-opted by a particular group of people. Part of the Incel culture was upholding the belief that men are entitled to sex; and women are withholding sex to manipulate men. They generally approved of violence and hatred towards women to level the playing field. It's not rocket science why the term became toxic. I hate that violent mysogynists claimed the word "Incel." It's such a perfect word to describe that feeling of hopeless loneliness. I hate that the term 'incel' is thro…

I don't think so. Scotland is the apparently the only country in the world with a 3-tier verdict system. The article points out there is no functional difference between "Not Guilty" and "Not Proven". They mean the exact same thing; except that "Not Proven" sounds worse for the defendant.

Read to the end. The juvenile system is intended for 'rehabilitation', not 'punishment.' It's allegedly for the 'best interest of the child.' They are supposed to receive psychological support, education, job training, and family engagement. There is a questionable assumption that the juvenile system is beneficial for any child; there are way too many instances of abuse, scandal, inadequate oversight, and poor outcomes. I agree with the author calling out how researchers invented a definition of 'masculinity' so they could tie it to suicidality. 100% That's the idea of intersectional privilege. Whatever privilege I have as a man doesn't mean much if I am economically destitute. Black men are cast as dangerous and intimidating; justifying their murder by the police. Muslim men have been tortured and held indefinitely without charges by the U.S. government. Men are subject to types of violence that women typically do not face (and vice versa). However, when you are in the stratified echelons of society, having male privilege really pays o…

I agree with that take. I am not intimately familiar with John Stuart Mill; but my understanding is that he believed people should be treated equally because of utilitarianism. Advocating for a vague, general equality does not make one a feminist. Bail is crazy. Here's more than you ever wanted to know about Bail in the American criminal justice system. In the American system, a criminal case proceeds like this: A warrant or indictment is issued based on 'probable cause'. Some characterize this standard as "more likely than not." Police make an arrest By default, defendants wait in local jail - which is usually lower security, and is intended for short-term incarcerations. After months (or years) of investigation, trials, and possibly app…

The meaning of "traditional" relationship in the United States is that the wife stays home and focuses on childcare, while the husband works with his 1 income providing a comfortable middle class lifestyle for the family. I am sorry that this happened to you. It's sexual assault & mutilation perpetrated in the name of tradition. We can't change the past. The only thing we can do is hold space for grief of an irreplaceable loss. It can be helpful to let that 5-year old version of you know that you see their pain and fear; and that you are here now to protect them. The framing of the question implies that being part of a social group requires the members to have less individuality. That it's inherently 'collectivist' to be accepted by a group. That framing doesn't make sense to me. We are social creatures, and we'll find groups that are compatible with our individuality. Sometimes, groups are a collections of flawed humans, so they often come with toxic attitudes like fat-shaming. It's not a "prison" to work within a group to make it more inclusive - that'…

More garbage from the Youtube slop economy. Let's break this down. The male host complains that the women are wearing tight shorts - as if they deserve catcalling because of how they are dressed ... in athletic wear. The host doesn't understand why catcalling is a problem. Catcalling makes women feel unsafe. The host is misleading about the nature of the arrests. 18 arrests were made for offences including harassment, sexual assault and theft - NOT for catcalling. They caught more serious crimes…

You talk about "Feminists" like they are a monolithic mass of demon-spawn. They are, in fact, real people with a huge diversity of beliefs. Being a women doesn't mean they are "feminist." In my experience, it's Conservative women who have the strongest expectations of their man to provide for them. The flip side of this arrangement is that a lot of men resent their female partners earning more money than them. Men have work to do as well to overcome these sexist expectations.

Some thoughts on no particular order: Whenever there is a mass shooting by a man, we are always talking about their mental health. You can have sexual relations while intoxicated. It's just that the other person cannot be so intoxicated that they cannot give consent. They are trying to convince us th…

You can make up language about needing female traits. Or, you can read through the curriculum where it very expressly emphasizes not putting children into gender stereotypes.

This post is misinformation. The curriculum is all about not bullying people who are different from us. I think it’s a great resource for schools. I am trying to get answers about where the anti-men language is found in the curriculum.

There are restrictions on dating between different ranks in the same chain of command. This not a regulation in any branch of the US military. It’s misinformation.

Women should be harassed because they leave their husbands… Are you ok? I am here because I support equality for men, and I care about men’s mental health. I am just not a capitalist stooge who blames women for every bad thing that happens to men. It’s not a 0 sum game.

Having assumed power is privilege. I can’t pretend otherwise. And, that privilege is unhealthy for me, and it’s unfair to my wife. That’s why breaking these gender roles is so important. Society has been regressing back into rigid gender roles, and it’s heartbreaking.

Marvin has also been unable to help me find any anti-men language in the curriculum. Surely, the people who found that language can point me to a Topic and Article, or a page number. Hey, if you’re just shit posting and not investigating every news story - that’s OK. I shitpost stories that ‘feel’ true. Thankfully, I have friends who will call me out when I am not posting something truthful, and I apologize. People who are interested in justice know they are not getting it right 100% of the time…

Thanks for the info. Well, don't be scared off if some gray beards still use the word 'feminism' to mean equality. :) There is a rich history of thought and learned wisdom that can be found in the feminist movement.

I don't know where you got your education about feminism, but it bears no resemblance to what I learned. Did you learn about 'feminism' in school? Is it something you learned about in this sub? I am genuinely curious, and I am open to the idea that maybe language is evolving in a way that I am unfamiliar with. Men are not the enemy in feminism. The problem is about a system - patriarchy. Feminism, Critical Race Theory, and Marxism are all just the same criticism of power structures that divide a…

Most feminists in my circle realize that late-stage capitalism is the enemy; not their own independence. I am confused by the beliefs of people who call themselves feminist these days.

That's shitty, and I am sorry. I didn't live with the crazy absurd expectations that are placed on men these days. The expectations about height and income - it makes me incredibly sad that's what men think is valuable about themselves. The myths of 'high value man' and 'high value woman' are so destructive. I hope you find your down-to-earth mate.

I think you have to be more specific about the field. Women are over-represented in teaching. I work in tech; and it's still a boys club. Quotas? What field are you working in?

A few instances of over-reach does not mean that millennia of patriarchy completely disappeared in a few decades. The Hegelian dialectic explains why progress is uneven. The over-reaches should be corrected; but the pretending that patriarchy is not active today is what why this sub comes off as misogynistic.

How the fuck is this a leftist sub? I see better takes on /r/mra. Misandry is a trauma response. It's not justified; it just is. Extending an once of compassion to misandrist goes a long way in my experience. I am not excusing abuse by females; but I am encouraging curiosity about misandrist attitudes held by non-abusive people. Communities need to police their own members. "Woke" men do need to call out mysogynist assholes. Yes, you can find terrible feminist takes on the Internet, wishing that…

You'd be surprised. They listen to woke men much more than they listen to any women. It's fucking tough standing up to a group, but you spoke out. You put the group on notice that not everyone accepted their misogyny. They'll call you a cuck, but they'll also think twice before assuming that everyone agrees with them.

Sorry, this is more sensational non-sense. It's a fucking study; it's not even a law. It is useful information to know how often women are cat-called. My read: - It's really scary and lonely to deal with health issues by yourself. You were a knight in shining armor by offering to be there for her. - She seemed to like spending time with you, and initially thought she was ready to have sex with you. - When she was in the moment, she realized she wasn't ready. She spoke her truth, and you listened. That is something to be proud of. It seems like everything that followed was mis-understanding or mis-communication. That's OK, not every relationshi…

This is a symptom of a hyper-capitalist society. I chose career over relationships for a long time, because I am always afraid of being the stooge. It doesn’t have to be this way. There used to be a day when we had a healthy middle class where you could prioritize family without becoming economically vulnerable.

It’s a “man’s world” can mean a lot of things. One typical meaning is that male-ness is the default, and females are an afterthought. Honestly, that’s been true in my experience in a lot of places. I am definitely treated as the leader, and decision maker; even when my wife is right next to me. It doesn’t happen all the time, but enough to be encountered on a regular basis.

It’s hard to square these 2 positions. People have autonomy to not engage in sex for any reason. Wives denying their husband sex is diabolical. It’s impossible to fully believe both at the same time. I always choose autonomy and consent. We agree that a man can leave a relationship at any time, including for the fact if he is sexually unsatisfied. That’s autonomy. BTW, it not always the man who is sexually dissatisfied with sex in a hetero relationship. I’ve known more women than men who admit t…

Thank you for compiling that information. I am also going through the 3-4 level packet. It’s a lot of information; but I have been impress with the quality of the curriculum. It’s so good, I am looking forward to the later ages, but I have some thoughts about how you characterized the curriculum for 3-4 Levels. Competitiveness, risk-taking, and physicality are not “boy” behaviors. It’s easy to fall into the stereotype trap even as we criticize others for stereotypes. In fact, the 3-4 grade mater…

Traditional Chivalry came about in an era where women could not own property, or have independence from a male figure like a father or husband. Chivalry reinforces this power structure by creating a myth about the fragility of women. They are too weak and naive to have independence, so women were infantilized even after they became adults.
