It's not a joke, he wanted you to give him an ego boost and he didn't get it so he put you down to compensate. He sounds like a dick.

Jennifer Aniston has had a lot of surgery and now looks quite fake, but regardless, why is "not aged a day" a reasonable goal? Like, she's twenty or thirty years older than when most people first saw her. She SHOULD look older! Have wrinkles, and whatever else goes with ageing. No doubt she takes a lot of care of her appearance, but I don't think not ageing visibly is a decent life goal.

I don't have an answer for you, but I'm so sorry this happened. Do you see a therapist? I absolutely think the first step is working on your trauma in order to feel safe internally, before moving towards shifting your outwards appearance in a way you want but makes you (quite justifiably!!) afraid.

"I don't know if he likes it rough" - he can like it however the hell he likes, but that doesn't apply to your body. This is not consent - this is do it now, ask for forgiveness later, with another human being's body. Fuck that.

Holy fuck. I've had two babies, and heard some of these horror stories but that's so fucking fucked. Men joke during labour like it's some sort of problem they have to endure, meanwhile the woman who has grown a living being inside her for nine months, changed her life to ensure that body is as healthy as possible, endured SO MANY COMPLICATIONS of normal pregnancies including vomiting, nausea, constipation, pain, aches, squished bladders, water retention, and so much more, let alone the worse on…

WTF!? That's incredibly violent and being beaten with a skillet would result in serious damage to that woman. It's likely that they're both stoned, hence the response, but that doesn't in any way make his lack of defence or action okay.

I've never watched it. But that article draws a really insightful narrative of why rape culture isn't specifically overt: it doesn't say "ten guys raping a girl they've never met in an alley is okay". It simply shifts and reframes rape until it's "not really" a problem, so that like a seasoned narcissist they can slither and gaslight their way out of the spotlight and blame the woman.

Yeah, that's the thing. Intimacy seems to be seen as sex. No. Sex can be a form and product of intimacy, but you can be intimate with a hand on a cheek; with meaningful words; with the ring glance at the right time to communicate something much more meaningful. Fucking doesn't inherently mean anything.

OP, what were the responses like? I hope in this case that there was absolutely fucking no difference to what is said here in FDS, but I'm curious if there's anyone who even tried to justify it?

How is this this guy's "favourite reality TV show moment"?? Or does he mean he enjoyed it because she took the money, not sharing it with this violent psychopath who threatened her in front of cameras?

As many other women have noted re: vaccination and pap smear advice, we do not all live in the United States of America, and vaccination approaches and pap smear advice varies. Education is awesome for all of us, but assuming that advice given in one country is best practice, or that poor practice is one country is widespread, can be misleading. Generally the US tends to have pretty woeful public healthcare approaches, especially for women, whereas many other countries are more liberal, supporti…

I orgasm fairly easily, so it isn't an achievement of any male when I do, however my current partner actively aims for this, focusing on me getting off and him not. Sometimes I feel weird when he gets me to orgasm repeatedly, and I'm exhausted and can't move, and he hasn't cum, and I ask if it bothers him and he says, "no, I like seeing you enjoy yourself, I like doing that to you". This also happens during PIV sex too - he wants to be able to make me cum a lot before he allows himself to. At th…

That's horrific. What an awful experience right after nine months of discomfort and possible suffering (pregnancy often sucks) before hours of pain and exhaustion, before more months of exhaustion and putting another human 100% before you?

This brought me to the edge of tears. That's horrific. Mortifying. They mocked and then shamed this poor girl, after a traumatic incident, and sexualised her and then, whatever the teacher did I have no fucking idea but borderlines sexual abuse, it's just. God. That poor child she was, and poor woman to carry that with her. That's heartbreaking.

I have, yes. I don't agree with everything in it (most but not all), but I don't recall reading the "what's mine is mine and what's his is mine" approach. If there's a specific link, more than happy to go read and I can comment there! I just don't recall reading it. I appreciate that if there are elements of FDS that personally don't vibe with me, I simply don't usually comment on them as I understand that's not the focus of this sub - and learn everything else I can here! So if this has been co…

It was so lovely to see this response - I thought perhaps you'd be strongly opposed! I agree that often I've been naive in the past and assumed HVM responses from LVM. And in those cases I think you're totally right - it's a really easy way for LVM to control and waste finances in a relationship. I'm lucky now that my partner is the more frugal of us (and I'm pretty good with money), while he has no issue with me spending it on me or looking after myself, he'll make sure he gets the nice foods w…

I'd love to hear more background to this - it sounds like a set up to see how people react, and in response this woman has stood up to these people, asked for police to be called, and basically stepped the fuck up in a way most people would never dream of. Amazing. Incredible!

I think there are some really good points in this. I hadn't heard much of the elegance movement, but I certainly agree that a lot is presented to us as what we need to do to fix our problems or be a "suitable" woman, when those answers are riddled with privilege and access. Her point at the start - that self-respect and identity aren't the same as appearing elegant - is so true. Being your authentic self is always a central point. Don't try to be something else, for men or anyone else, or you'll…

There were a few hidden comments about "why regardless of size?". In this poem (if you watch before commenting), she specifically references her weight as a core element of her response, and how she is perceived and seen as "less" because of it. The principles of what she has to say ring true whether your body or weight are similar to hers or not. I wasn't calling her size out as an irrelevant feature; she literally wrote this amazing poem SPECIFICALLY about her own body size and how that is tre…

It's such a deep puritan view that self-worth and vanity are negative. I'm learning that valuing how you look is something that intimidates others - but doesn't actually affect them at all. We shouldn't care if someone loves themselves and thinks they're the hottest thing on earth - it only becomes an issue if we think OUR opinion means more than their. Which is exactly what people who get angry at people who feel themselves and value themselves think.

I guess we don't know about these men at work, but without more context the first guy could just be flattering/polite flirting to get what he wants, and the second guys comment just seemed a little bit ... neggy? I just get a negging vibe is all. Be careful is all! But yes, contacting someone with no info or photo is just a "I might get a lay, will just contact anyone" thing. Bleugh.

It works because you've been wrong in your life before (we all have) just like we've seen visual tricks. So when someone says "you think this is one thing, but you know you've been wrong before and in this case you're wrong", it's so easy for them to play on that. Trust your gut. Every time. Even if you don't know why - it's literally your brain processing non-verbal and subconscious cues that you can't yet verbalise, but are reading. You don't have to explain yourself. You only need to trust in…

You think? Perhaps I'm just giving him the benefit of the doubt and not seeing the darker side. I tend to be optimistic about people's motives in general, rather than judge, and it does make sense to me, but then again, that's the whole point of people who tell lies about their motives - they make sense at a glance on the surface, but you dig deeper and it's a lot darker ...

This is fucked up on so many levels. She was forced to apologise in front of others but she's deceitful for not fully meaning it? When she knocked up his co-worker!? He searched for her instagram using her snapchat handle, and found Twitter and then reddit. He didn't find the insta (at least at the start). I'm surprised at being down voted just for having a non-toe-the-line opinion. There are many many instances of men being creeps. I just don't think this is one of them.

Mmm, I disagree in this situation. I think if he was doing it for enjoyment, he had no motivation to tell his girlfriend, and a hell of a lot to lose. He also asked other female friends to see if it was the right thing to do. In this case, it's also not just she has reddit or OF but how it leads to personal information (where she lives). If he wanted a benefit, telling his girlfriend which would lead to her daughter likely changing her handles etc. wasn't the way to get it.

100% - you want to fill your heart with love of all types, as those loves ebb and flows and come and go over the years, and putting all your focus on one type with one person isn't healthy or happy!

I used to be her. Reading into every little sign, desperate to see the hidden message about how he "really" felt, what he really wanted, what he wanted but just couldn't realise right now. I look back and hurt for myself. My therapist told me he was feeding me crumbs and I, starving, took them. Now I know: I'd rather starve than give myself to someone who views me as so little that they're happy to only feed me crumbs.

Ignoring the actual topic, I really love that FDS has so many in-depth style posts. There's value in what you read, and the comments - not just a long QA forum that duplicates content or ends up being quiet. I took my partner to go see it to show a non-glamorised, realistic depiction of what women face. I feel the ending said a lot - I don't want to spoil anything but personally I thought it was amazing about such a shit topic.

This is a pretty damn honest answer, which is what is needed. I always wanted to be the sort of person who wanted to feel rewarded by those things, but I'm not that passionate. Having moved into the corporate sphere I found my passion (project management) which also pays well, and being a single parent for a long while I'm glad I did. As for knowing what you want to do, I would say you don't always know for a long time. I suggest doing what you enjoy that you can reasonably make money from - and…

I really loved than in promising young woman, the central violent act the movie revolves around isn't shown, and barely heard at one point. Then a final less violent but still brutal act occurs which is shown, but in a painful, non-romanticised, very raw way which I didn't feel was triggering or in any way sexualised. I agree that rape is way too showy, and I hold my breath and close my eyes when I happens and wait for it to be over. Yes, it's realistic, but that doesn't stop it happening.

What strikes me most is the fact that the definition to him of being attracted to a girl is solely based on if you want to fuck her. Sure, being horny can make you want to have sex with someone you wouldn't normally. But how about you get to know her personality. Does she like things you find interesting? Do you find her funny? Do you two vibe? Does conversation flow easily? Do you want to know more about her and her about you? Those things aren't influenced by how horny you are. But if your eva…

Notice how his behaviour is exactly the same as that of a five year (except my five year old doesn't swear like that or threaten?). Yeah. Man whose never been expected to emotionally extend himself or grow up beyond that age. And so he acts out like a child, but he's bigger and louder and more entitled, and better at faking adultry around other adults.

This sickens me. I have a five and seven year old daughter, and an eight year old step-daughter. The thought of this being normal exposure, if not for them then their peers, is horrifying. In their twenties, sure, they can begin to explore and decide. But from a magazine which is clearly pro-anal? For teenagers? That's vile.

I really struggle to give this the reading everyone else has. If this were a woman, we'd be applauding her putting her kids first (not introducing them early, making time for them), and saying she'd been screwed over by two men, one who gave up all responsibility and was carrying that. The men dating her clearly would have had unreasonable expectations on her time. In this case, having been a single mum myself, I think what he says is reasonable. We don't know why he had the kids. Not sure if that's right, but given he's filming it after what looks like an argument to make a point, and I think in the second video says he's her boyfriend, then just walking off seems the best response.

I feel you on this. The hardest part of single parenting is doing it all yourself, with no support - nobody to laugh when they pee on the floor or drop a bowl of food you have to clean up, or to smile and see their first day of school or first steps. I know it's exhausting and hard. But they'll see what their mum does for them, and how lucky they are to have you, and that is an amazing lesson - better than having a broken household where mum does everything for dad, and they learn that dynamic.

I got my kids a stepping stool, so things they can reasonably do without me, they can use the step for. My five year old makes herself toast in the mornings by stepping up on it to put the toast in, and to get stuff out of the fridge. It's really helpful to allow them to do things themselves without me having to do stuff that they can't reach :)

This is awesome - and I do think a really great element of this movement. Often, people think kids "can't" do things. Fuck, kids used to be working in the mines or factories at six, you know? Yes, your kid can. Now, there's a huge emotional support element, and that's critical, but if you work *with* your child, they not only can do it, but they're empowered and often want to do it. It requires work, and can be harder up front to teach them the skills while you're with them, but once they've lea…

I think this should be taught to every single female, everywhere. We justify and explain and do anything and everything to say why we help others but they don't do it for us, but it really comes down to: Value yourself. Treat yourself that way. And it's so so hard to see ourselves clearly, that the best way to adjust our thoughts is: what do I do for others? Now: do that for myself!

You're right, I am trying to talk myself into it - I'm just not sure whether my reluctance is genuine and internal, or a learned behaviour? It's a big growth period for me emotionally, exploring all of this, so trying to pick apart my own internal workings is really important to me. Still, it's nice to hear that not celebrating is also okay - I just need to figure out what I really want!

I really love that - a holiday for love rather than romance! I have two young daughters and I think I'd love to spoil them so they renege their worth and feel that. We're very expressive of our love anyway, and they would soak it up. Thank you ❤️

I can't stand BBT. First it has this trope that nerds are completely socially incompetent, and women are only dumb bimbos or rigid robots or whatever. The laugh track I hate, the humour is stupid and awkward without it. And I hadn't seen enough to see your points in play, but it absolutely makes sense that it plays to the trope and how many men view themselves. The lack of their ability to function is infantile, and only perpetuates the "oh he's so smart he just can't do daily stuff". Well I'm a…

When I met my ex-husband, I suggested he take my surname as it was better and he did. My daughters have my surname now (which isn't that of my abusive parents - I legally changed it when I was 19), and I LOVE that this surname is all ours. Not my shitty parents' or their bio father who left when I was pregnant with #1 during his manic episode or when #2 was 11 months old. We're the three of us, always, and we share that name - nobody else tarnishes it.

I think that low value people in general put more stock in how they are perceived than their innate value. When you don't recognise the external things that validate them, they get angry or upset. A high value person can laugh and say something like "more or less!" and move on because the specific college they went to doesn't define them, even if they see the value for themselves in it.

Wow. Everything about this rings true in every way, from every guy I've dated.

I laughed out loud at this.

I also recommend changing locks. Don't bother getting anyone to deal with the TV, he can get it when it works for you, and can't get in with the keys changed.

Get you on that. I guess from an FDS perspective I think the approach would be to end the relationship now, formally, and still say goodbye in person, yknow?

You say "we've all but broken up". It just sounds like you haven't taken the plunge to just end the relationship, and are half in and half out. If you've broken up definitively, then who you're interested in is none of his business and entirely your own and I see no issue there. It just read like you're still dating - I don't understand breaking up "officially" in person?

Honesty is important. Just because he's not done the right thing by you, doesn't make it okay to do the wrong thing. It doesn't sound like you've objectively done the wrong thing, but by not being honest with him and yourself and just ending the relationship when you're not okay with his behaviour and interested in someone else, you're not being the bigger person either.

He sounds awful and all the advice tells you this. But retaliating with name calling and stealing is just as LV and plays into the cycle. Break up with him. Go to therapy. Work on loving yourself and learning. Ways to deal with conflict healthily. Definitely read the FDS handbook. I'm sorry you're in this situation, it sounds so hard, but only you can choose to leave it.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
