This is all very true. I’m estranged from my entire family save one person, and I’d never be friends with anyone who doesn’t support me in that, even if they can’t completely understand it (but most can!).

Yep. None of these men would think it was “easy money” if they had to spend hours PER DAY shaving, exfoliating, waxing, tanning, doing their hair/wig, plucking, manicuring and pedicuring, working out, dieting, taking disruptive hormones to prevent pregnancy, suffering menstrual symptoms, etc, etc, etc. Nevermind the psychological and emotional toll, which they cannot comprehend because they haven’t spent their entire life until that point being sexualized and abused (or just living with the ever…

This is not a frivolous topic at all. It’s 🚩🚩🚩. She is not overthinking. If she doesn’t DTMFA, she’s in for years of frustration, disappintment, and loneliness, amid further neglect, emotional abuse, and gaslighting. 27 is young. She should cut her losses immediately and work on creating the life she wants for herself. Otherwise, she’s going to be miserable for years trying to beg this “man” to love her, until one day she wakes up at 37, unceremoniously dumped. Ask me how I know.

I was in a longterm cohabiting relationship like you’ve described and, by the time I was in my early-to-mid 30s (🤡), I was very bored and ready to move on to the next stage of life. My “partner,” however, was not. By the last couple of years of the relationship, I was making romantic Saturday night dinner date reservations for us. I’d get dressed up, and he’d shuffle to the car literally wearing a rumpled T-shirt, tatty khakis, and Birkenstocks, covered in cat hair. Then he’d refuse to really ev…

This also gets at why so much of conventional hetero dating was always very uncomfortable for me to the point of being repulsive. A lot of the dynamics, rituals, and expectations are actually about performing submissiveness to the man. That’s just not the in my wheelhouse. Never has been, never will be.

I’m alone this year again (after being alone last years bc quarantine), after having disowned nearly my entire family over their support of Former Guy and what that reveals about their values and character. I’m not sorry. I had a nice, non-traditional meal at lunch while FaceTiming with a loved one, went on a nice long autumn walk, and I’m about to get dressed up and take myself to the movies (one of those that serves food and alcohol). Maybe you should do the same—dress up and take yourself out…

I’m 42 and have been single for 6 years after an 8-year cohabiting relationship. My life is awesome, because I accept no alternatives. Being alone forever isn’t so bad—that’s propaganda. And being single =/= being alone. But you’ll probably also not be alone forever. Especially if you’re young—and level up NOW instead of letting this dead weight hold you down until one day you wake up at 37 and he dumps you 🙃.

This. I’ve never particularly wanted to get married because I saw from my own childhood exposure to family members’, neighbors’, etc hetero marriages that it was disappointing and a scam 99% of the time. By the time I was in my late 20s I realized I also didn’t want to have kids (and certainly not biologically), so there’s really been no pressure for me to compromise or settle. As a result I haven’t wasted much time on casual/constant dating, and I’m a 42yo single homeowner enjoying my life. I l…

I agree. Forgiveness is a scam. Forgiveness is for small mistakes, that we all make because we are human and sometimes miss the mark—like snapping at someone out of irritation or eating the last piece of pie. Big things—abuse, betrayal, abandonment—are unforgivable without a lot of work on the part of the offender. Real work, real evidence of a change of heart, real repair for the damage and hurt caused—proof of change over time. And some things, like child abuse, sexual assault, murder—those ar…

Our society has so over privileged the heteronormative nuclear family dynamic that there is very little opportunity for many people to have support, love, community, physical touch… I think that’s one reason we feel we need “a relationship.” It’s the only semi accessible form of family/community that still exists under late capitalism. And even that is highly fairy taled, manufactured consent.

When the MiL told me he was just like his dad and I had to let it go being upset about the uneven domestic labor and emotional labor, with a cute lil anecdote about how one day she realized LVX’s dad was just never gonna care about household cleanliness as much as she did so she could either ruin a relationship with a good man while only making herself upset or she could just get over it and do all the cleaning. I went back over for a visit a few years ago and met up with his parents for dinner, as they’ve kept in touch over the years. And the dad insists we go to Wetherspoons. I was so mad! This is bad advice imo. My finances are none of his business, and I don’t play coy about the baseline expectation that he’s paying. Assume he’s paying. Don’t take out your purse or wallet. Don’t offer to pay. If the waiter asks how to split the check, don’t make eye contact with either the waiter or the date. Just wait. Look bored. Non-plussed. No expression. If your date asks you to split the bill, look confused and say, “I thought YOU invited me out for dinner.” If he insists, tell the waiter …

This is why if I was on OLD and a dude asked me for date ideas, I would NEVER counter with “I’m used to the man planning the date” or start naming high end restaurants or whatever. This is a good point, actually, and one that I had not really considered specifically. I’m only 5 feet tall, and, from my naturally-since-birth FDS type of viewpoint (😂), there are only a few advantages to being in a relationship with a man. One of them is having him around on demand to do tasks for me, and that includes reaching stuff, putting stuff together, etc. So they definitely need to be tall. 😂

Until I realized I didn’t want biological children, I only dated men over 6’ because I wanted to give any potential children a chance to be at least closer to average height. I don’t want to be tall, but being this short is mostly less than ideal, so I wouldn’t create more very short people—especially sons—on purpose.

Judaism doesn’t teach this kind of forgiveness. It’s abusive.
/r/FemaleDatingStrategy05/07/21 06:55 PM
24

You may be mentioning this in passing or semi-tongue-in-cheek, but there is actually a sophisticated theological framework around ideas of repentance, forgiveness, and healing in Judaism that is very different from Christianity. I’d encourage anyone curious to look it up. Starting with the concept of “teshuvah.”
/r/FemaleDatingStrategy05/07/21 06:54 PM

I think it’s toxic Christianity and bad theology. At least mostly, in the American/Western self help and therapy spaces.
/r/FemaleDatingStrategy05/07/21 06:51 PM

I agree ONE MILLION PERCENT. Been saying this for a while—including the part about forgiveness being appropriate for small everyday mistakes, not big things like betrayal, abandonment, abuse. “Forgiveness” is a scam. You can move on without it. You have to. Some things are unforgivable. And many other things cannot be forgiven—REALLY forgiven—without sincere guilt, adequate apology, and the proof of a pattern of behavioral change. And time. Bless you.

This. I peeked in briefly after my last serious breakup (six years ago, when I was 36!), and I just felt sooooo gross. Like, it was inherently, immediately, deeply demeaning. I noped out in less than 24 hours. ✨✨I’m too good for OLD, and so are you.✨✨

This. It’s this. Speaking as an over-40 who remembers traditional dating, chat rooms, classifieds (!), Match.com 1.0 desktop, “hookup culture” panic, and the advent of of apps. And who met two of her four serious LTRs on the Internet (1996, 2007). They’re a scourge. A mistake.

I think it’s always been a pickme behavior. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I just didn’t realize that was the fundamental reason I’ve always felt skeeved out by OLD. Thank you for this moment of clarity.

This is the first thing I’ve seen that made me interested in watching this movie. And I also now want to see an alternative version of the story, totally from Cruella’s point of view, with the assumption that she’s not actually a raging psychopath. Like, a movie that just wholly glorifies her. In fact, I want to see that for every female villain in literature.

Agree. I have found it almost entirely unhelpful and, in one case, actively harmful due to the therapist gaslighting me about my abusive father whom I’ve disowned. I’ve tried five therapists over seven years and probably won’t try it again. I found I’d already processed most of what I was sharing (due to my own admitted neuroticism, tendency to over analyze, and acute self awareness). The main thing I got from therapy is that I realized fully that I don’t actually want or need any outside author…

I was in a LDR for three years. I met the guy online and we met IRL a year later. Until that point, we weren’t anywhere near being in a relationship. We weren’t actually in one until a few months later when we talked about exclusivity and decided to be together. “LDRs” based on gaming are not relationships. This is very juvenile, and something I see happening only with poorly socialized Gen Zers. Long term, it’s not an optimistic trend for them individually or for society.

Never have I been less shocked about anything. It makes me sad that there are additional victims of this piece of shit, but I’m glad he’s probably going away. I hope he rots. I hope his enabling, ignorant wife is able to escape, but it seems unlikely. They marry those girls off young and coerce them into having a whole bunch of kids for a reason.

I’ve long thought women are more sexual than men. We’re just oppressed and repressed. By scared, weak men. For them, sex is perfunctory, routine, like taking a shit. It’s sad and pathetic. But they think that because nevertheless their lives revolve around it, that means they LIKE it and NEED it more than we do. Au contraire.

Can confirm. Stopped speaking to my narcissist, emotionally abusive father five years ago. Reached out a few times since, and only ever got back more abuse, guilt tripping, gaslighting, etc. It took a while, but I finally realized that the only way we could ever have a relationship would be if I continued to let myself be emotionally abused by him and expected zero reflection or growth on his part—basically, if I continued to enable his narcissism and to be a child (I’m over 40). Totally gave up…

I have long said that if we truly understood the prevalence of sexual abuse, especially of children, and there were consequences, our society would cease to function. These numbers don’t sound off base to me, at all. When I finally disclosed my own childhood sexual abuse to my girlfriends when I was in my 30s, at least half of them told me that they have been raped. Several of them had never told anyone before.

This mirrors how most of them are only able to experience a concept of love that is self serving and shallow. They “love” a woman who makes them feel good. They have zero interest in women as people, or in a mutually supportive, dialectical, evolving, ever-growing relationship. They don’t love individual women; they love how women as a class make them feel (via using women as a fleshlight, improving their careers/social respectability, giving them kids they barely contribute to on any level, ser…

Is there still a pay gap? Do you menstruate? Did you spend literally 1/10 of the time and money I did preparing for the date? Are you risking your safety and possibly life by going on this date? Am I going to give you an STD that I’m unknowingly carrying, or impregnate you? The moment I SHOW UP at the date, you owe me money. The point of the date is for ME to determine if I’m willing to risk all that for the possibility that YOU might add to my already full and happy life. Next.

Never been with a man. Wouldn’t ever. If you get to that point it’s too late. Have seen five different female therapists over the past seven years or so, didn’t really find any of them super helpful. They were either providing zero feedback or substantive challenges/questions/advice (like, “have you tried journaling?” or “use a mood tracking app” - uh, duh) OR they were gaslighting and not equipped to deal with sex abuse / childhood emotional abuse / narcissistic parent trauma. I think there COU…

Hard same. Now I’m in my 40s, I’m really cringing at some of my past, obviously disordered behavior. I don’t beat myself up about it; it’s in the past, and I am future focused and positive and driven! But it’s instructive and funny, nonetheless. Yes!!! Do not internalize other people’s failures. Do not let yourself believe this means there is a fault with YOU or that you will ALWAYS be disappointed. Just be discerning and sure of your own values, standards, and boundaries. Better to wait for the friends, family, men, and other people and relationships that you truly desire and deserve than waste time being disappointed by people who were never going to fulfill you. Cut them loose! Cut YOURSELF loose! Don’t internalize. Regroup, focus, m…

For people who go through this a lot, I recommend actually making a list of the bad things about the relationship. And then, anytime you’re feeling nostalgic about it or second-guessing yourself, go back and read over the list and let yourself feel that anger and disappointment again. You’ll be cured of missing them fast enough.

It’s not just you. Up until I was about 35 or 36, I was attracted to men close to my own age, getting older as I got older. I don’t want kids, I don’t wanna be anybody’s wife, I don’t want that whole life script lifestyle, so most of the men who are single and near my age are totally repulsive to me. Yeah, it’s funny. Gendered fundamentalist religious dress restrictions, while generally insisting that men wear long clothes, too, fail to account for the fact that women (and other men!) are also turned on by male bodies. It’s pervasive across most cultures, this idea that “men are visual” and cannot control themselves and thus shouldn’t be tempted—and the flip side assumption that this is not the case for women. I’m pretty sure the reaction I have to a hot guy with great hair is equivalent (or…

Agreed. Do it!!! I even blocked some “friends” during the pandemic. The enforced isolation gave me the necessary space to reevaluate a lot of connections and activities. I don’t need friends who only invite me as an after thought, who exploit my contacts and network for profit while name dropping me without notice or permission, who say demeaning or condescending things repeatedly, who use me to feel better about their own lifescript choices, who bore me, or with whom I am unable to have mutuall…

I'm over 40, and the only time I briefly peeped in the apps, like five years ago after my last LTR breakup, I was horrified by this. I would never date anyone appropriate for my age who publicly advertised that he wants to date 18 year olds. Or 32 year olds. Ugh, dudes.

The one where the guy paid for everything with $50 bills, bragged his dad was a roadie for Willie Nelson, stopped by a friend’s house to sell a stack of fake IDs, used a fake handicapped sign to park right outside the bar, and got into a road rage incident in which he got out of the car and tried to fight the other driver on the way home. 0/10, would not recommend.

I’m childfree but I think giving birth to a single child entitles the wife to a lifetime free of domestic labor, ESPECIALLY waking up multiple times in the middle of the night for months and months with a baby. GTFOH Ofc I also don’t believe you can love someone and want or expect them to go through pregnancy and child birth, but then I’m an outlier.

I was gonna say, it would be normal if you were in high school because those guys don’t have much money, may not have a car, live with their parents. Don’t date 26yo men who live with their parents.

I had a guy who was an old acquaintance from high school, and I’m talking we’re both in our late 30s, message me out of nowhere and asked me how I’m doing now, etc. The very same day at escalated to sexual innuendo and asking me out. When I said, sure, I’d love to go to the nicest restaurant in town, he was like, “oh, I was thinking come over to your place for Netflix and chill.” The audacity. Block. Bye!

Same experience. Will never pay again. I did it on my first date, when I was 15, and it went downhill from there. But, man, remember the days of a guy you met IRL calling you on the phone and clearly asking you on a date and picking you up and taking you to the movies? Didn’t know how good we had it! 😂

Yeah I’m over 40 and one thing I’ve learned is: never give a man I don’t immediately feel that “spark” with the time of day. It’s never worth it, in my experience. I want to start off attracted to them and get EVEN MORE attracted to them as I get to know them.

I thought for a long time that women are actually more sexual than men are. Men don’t even really like sex that much. It’s perfunctory, routine, animalistic. Like scratching an itch. I would be sad for them if they weren’t such assholes about it and cared a literal about pleasuring us. Men are boring af.
