I have a sister who’s on the warpath about this and she’s already put together a sizable list of things I need to do. It’s going to be interesting what we and the accountant uncover over the ensuing months. Yes I’ll keep posting here. It’s a harsh lesson I’m learning but at the core is the fact the two of us grew apart years ago and failed to communicate our unhappiness with the marriage to one another.

From my own amateur forensic evaluation I discovered my wife opened a $25k credit line 3 years ago and has been taking money out of that and paying it back from our checking account. She also registered me on Social Security website using my personal ID but with her email address so she can track what I will receive monthly from SS. It will be interesting to see what the forensic accountant uncovers.

Thank u all for your thoughtful and helpful comments. Turns out by looking carefully at our bank account she retained a lawyer several months ago.

Appreciate the comments. People who know me best describe me as naive and ingenuous. My gut feeling tells me to speak to my wife directly to give her the opportunity to explain why we needed this line and why no taxes were paid for 2023. I want to tell her a forensic accountant can follow the money trail. And to tell her since trust is now an issue mediation is no longer an option. I’m going to ask her to put back all the money she took into our shared account and I will not pass judgment althou…

I’m 64 and recently separated from my wife of 31 years. Moved out 4 months ago. Just started mediation last week. Just found out 4 days ago my wife may be moving money from our checking account to an undisclosed location. I’m a physician and have always trusted her with handling our finances. Unbeknownst to me she opened up home equity line. I just looked at our bank account for first time in over 10 years and was surprised and shocked to see this HEL. We have no credit card debt. Our cars are p…
