All CVTs are disappointing. I had two rental Civics: a 2013 EX with the 5-speed auto, and a 2014 EX with the CVT. The CVT was unbearable. Going against the wind, the tach was everywhere and the car gave the same feeling as when a traditional automatic was slipping. Plus, the CVT returned worse fuel economy on the same trip. Again, there's a reason the Miata has been around for nearly 30 years and the S2000 didn't last a decade. The S2000 was a good try, but it was too big, heavy, didn't have enough torque, and was really inefficient for a little 4-cylinder. Jason with the Engineering Explained YouTube channel bought an AP1 not too long ago and did a nice comparison video between his S2000 and an MX5. The S2000 wasn't a bad car, it just wasn't as good as the benchmark.

The engine is what makes the S2000 such a letdown. It has no torque. It's also heavier and doesn't handle as well. It competes better with things like the Pontiac Solstice/Saturn Sky twins than it does with the Miata. There's a reason the Miata has lasted nearly 30 years.

They also have a god-awful CVT in them. I test drove a '17 Outback 3.6R Touring last fall. It still had rattles and more wind noise than my '14 did, but at least it didn't have the Rubbermaid hard dash that my '14 had.

While the S2000 was a neat car, it was no Miata. The original AP1 couldn't compete, and the AP2 was even worse. Granted, the Miata is a very high benchmark. I like the S2000. I can actually fit in the S2000 (I'm too tall for a Miata). But it's no Miata.

Of course I'm serious. Honda is known for transmissions with their V6s imploding. They're fine if you can handle having a 4-cylinder, but the V6/automatic is a ticking time bomb. Also, their "RealTime 4WD" in things like the CRV is an utter joke, and the system in the Pilot/Ridgeline, while better than the system in the CRV, is still not as good as full-time systems used in Subaru and Audi.

'98 Outback Sport was the good one. She lasted until almost 350K with nothing more than brakes and O2 sensors. The last one was a '14 Outback 3.6R SAP. Honda can't put together a reliable V6/automatic combination. I have an Acura as a shitty little commuter car right now, but the steering system makes it nearly undrivable in snow and ice. Also, Honda's AWD systems aren't in the same league as Quattro.
