"Never let the sun go down on an argument" is good advice, but not always possible because it takes two to be reasonable and work shit out. I've been luckier than many in that respect.

I would suggest that if your live-in partner/wife/gf isn't somebody who can be reasoned with, then perhaps it's time to reevaluate the relationship. But talk about it first. There's a lot to be said for drawing boundaries, and drawing them early. IME.

Yes, I realise what that means if there are children involved, but unreasonableness is a warning sign for future pain and the longer you're together, the more painful will be the separation.

Threatening to make me sleep on the couch would be an idle threat.

Having said that, my wife's never brought up the topic in the 13 years we've been married on account of her being an adult.

Pathetic. If anything ever goes this far and we just need a break, the one of us who is most offended usually removes themselves. I can't imagine staying in a relationship so selfish and self-involved that you think it's okay to just demand your SO remove themselves from your presence. That's what my ex was like, and I have since learned fights don't need to go that way and it's a red flag that someone doesn't really care about you deep down more than themselves. It's also a red flag that you don't know how to have a healthy fight in your relationship.

I live with my ex gf until she moves out. We have a spare room and when she gets mad at me she tries to banish me to that room to sleep. Not having any of that.

You just need her to understand early on in the relationship that you will not be threatened. If she doesn't want to be in your presence, then she can go sleep on the couch... but you will not be. If you don't want to be in her presence, you can sleep on the couch.

The solution that I've found is to make sure you have a spare bed/ guest room somewhere (could be a single) for when someone needs some personal space... otherwise, make sure you have a comfy couch.
