The lawyer said she’ll need cash/liquid assets more than me, and each asset is not necessarily split equitably. (She might get a big asset and I get a medium and a small, etc, he said.) IRA is a joint marital asset because everything is when you’re married. Maybe the alimony is less if she gets all the liquid assets. I dunno.

There would be about $480 leftover in the IRA, which would be all I’m left with in this scenario. I don’t know why we couldn’t split each asset up according to the 55-45 formula, but the lawyer made it sound like that’s the way it usually goes - i,e, “she might get one large asset and you’d get a medium and a small, etc.” because she’ll need the cash more than me. In PA. Been married for 25 years. In PA, it’s “equitable” distribution, not “equal,” so, in theory, she could even get 60%, though that’s rare from what my lawyer says. Just seems to me that liquid assets should be divvied the same as non-liquid assets. Apparently though, she deserves the cash more because she makes less. So my standard of living drops and hers stays the same. It’s messed up.
