I’ve been separated from my STBX for 1 1/2 years. We’re in agreement to proceed with divorce. I had a consult with a lawyer who actually took the time to look at our financials (another lawyer wouldn’t do that). He summarized what to expect. I make about 3.5x what my wife does. She’s been working for the past five years since our oldest went through college. She has two bachelor degrees and an MBA. I have a bachelor degree. Our net worth is about $1.2 million. Lawyer estimates she would get about 55% of everything, so roughly $660K. (Two of three kids are adults. Third will be 18 in March, before divorce is final, and will go to college. They all currently live with the wife in our home.) Home sale would net about $300K (plus everything in the house per the lawyer). Mutual fund about $90K. The only asset left is my IRA, which my lawyer said would make up the rest of the $270K she’d be owed. Then, of course, alimony. That leaves her with a shit ton to put down on a new house and money to cover the mortgage. I’m left with nothing to put down on a place and would scrape by for a decent apartment. Does this sound “equitable” to anyone?
