If it were me (tm), I'd avoid her as much as possible. But I'm immature with a low EQ. If you do want to help, I would think the fix would be boundaries and communication. Start by telling her everything you wrote here, especially the part about the actual arrangement. "Hey, this is an occasional mutual dog watching arrangement, not a pet co-ownership or bail out if you get in over your head." You might want to word it more diplomatically tho.

She moved out early to live with her friend. She took her clothes, makeup, computers, and all the money in the bank account. I stayed in the house until it sold. So I had physical possession of the furniture, tools, photo albums, wall art, etc etc. The court order was surprisingly simple. "Wife and husband to divide all property inside marital home 50/50" (or similar, don't have the decree on me, but it was definitely a one-liner). I documented everything. I took upwards of 500 photos. Rooms at …

You're not alone. Defining yourself by the company you keep can spiral pretty easily. Dating is a minefield. A girl recently told me I'm not at her level right after I paid for her $50 poke plate. Relationships are fickle and problems cascade. I think Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs has another layer sandwiched in there somewhere - fill your own cup first kind of stuff. Try to define yourself with a passion, move towards it, and pick yourself back up no matter how many times you trip. A lot of peopl…

My divorce didn't make it to trial. It did make it to a mandatory settlement conference. Mediators are typically experienced family court lawyers who predict the outcome of a trial. The mediator was very fair. He listened to things that I thought would get drowned out in an otherwise overworked court system. I got lucky though. Take a base outcome of 100 (just some empirical number). Then roll a pair of dice. That 100 can easily sway an order of magnitude either way. 100 can easily become a 10 o…

Might be sexist (probably is) but I think women go for revenge fucks. No bueno. Definitely don't want to be a part of that.

Congrats. Must be an incredible feeling to not have that hanging over you.

Your lawyer is projecting $1.3 million in alimony over the next fifteen years at present value. A second opinion at $5000 seems worthwhile. My first lawyer told me the same thing. I'd end up paying the same amount +/- a hundred bucks no matter how much I fought. He also told me a few crazy stories. A judge ordered one man to take out a life insurance policy on himself with his ex-wife as the beneficiary and make payments until he retired to ensure she would get owed alimony in the event of his d…

I agree with most of this short of the conspiracy theory. The court system is just something that evolved. Laws usually get bulkier. Precedent causes most of the bulk. We honor existing laws especially those that have been challenged and survived. Alimony is still a thing because of this. We've always done alimony. Hence it must work and we'll keep doing it. It's rare that we clean the slate and start over. The closest example in recent memory is the overhaul of the tax system, which didn't wipe…

I make $160k in San Diego, recently voted the priciest city in the US. I'm pushing a kid through school. So it's not a lot of money. But I'm doing okay. I'm comfortable in a rental. I'll never own again in SD. My house WAS a very hard won accomplishment for me. She definitely worked against it, spent more than she earned. My home is gone and that's a failure in my book. That hurts a lot. She did much worse. "treating my children like they only exist for social media posts" - YUP, sounds super fa…

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
