Blonde hair is more noticeable right off the bat, but so is contrast and length. No matter what stylists may tell you, blonde hair does not suit everyone. Anyone who says "anyone can go blonde, it just depends on the shade" is lying. You can lighten your hair, but it offers no guarantee as to making you not just look different than you did before but actually better. You need to ask yourself 1) if it would actually look good on you, 2) what your 'blonde' upkeep budget would be and if you can aff…

Soft acoustic music. I like to listen to Christina Perri, Billie Marten, Rosi Golan, Marble Sounds, Colbie Caillat, Landon Pigg, and Lenka. And also a few songs by The Weepies. Anything you’d hear playing in a small locally owned coffee shop circa 2007-ish or in a “quirky” movie is my favorite. Edit: (just adding more artists): Benjamin Francis Leftwich, Mindy Gledhill, Amos Lee, Ingrid Michaelson, Joy Williams

A lot of good advice here, but I’m gonna throw in my opinions because this is something I’m looking for, too! I like the idea of nude polishes, but since I’m very pale they don’t show up or aren’t really “nude” on me (it just looks like I smudged a wrong shade of foundation on my nails!) and the undertone is too warm. Personally, I think that a grey-purple color works fantastically year-round. I prefer 7-free brands since nail polish chemicals can be detected in the bloodstream after 48 hours (y…

Thanks for answering, it just seemed unclear from the way some women on this sub act/discuss things.

I think I’ve tried those before, they were only one or two millimeters longer than my natural lashes and looked kind of pitiful unless I put mascara on since mascara makes more of a difference. I like volume in my lashes with a tiny bit of length, I just haven’t been able to find any that don’t look silly and can also fit my almond shaped eyes correctly.

This makes sense to me. Everyday I look at myself seeing what needs "correcting", and I ask myself the questions 1) Do I look older than I am and 2) Do I look masculine, even by a little too much? I feel like even when I'm wearing a floral dress with heels and a pink purse with my hair done I still feel masculine because of my face some days.

I'm a college student, so I don't think that's in my budget right now. If you can recommend some good cheap false lashes that last a while, though, I might be able to afford that!

I'm white, cool undertone. My skin is so pale that oftentimes even the lightest shades of foundation prove to look yellow or orange on me. My skin is combination, greatly depending on the day and my diet, but I have slight acne scarring and sebaceous filaments (never-ending blackheads). Neither is terrible per se, but since I am alabaster-skinned even the smallest marks and flaws tend to show up more.

I’ve had a hard time finding a makeup look that works for me but doesn’t age me or look too unnatural. I currently wear BareMinerals Original Powder Foundation, a small amount of concealer, a little brow powder, mascara (upper lashes only most days), a tiny amount of a peachy bronzer applied as a blush layered with a tiny bit of my sheer lipstick blended on top of it as a cream blush, and then I apply my lipstick regularly. I don’t feel like my eyes are defined enough, but if I put any more make…

I think you must've misread somewhere, I don't actually want lighter skin, but rather lighter hair instead. My complexion is that of a porcelain doll in color, but my hair is dark brown, almost black. Would it look better lighter? I appreciate the advice on BDD, sometimes it is difficult to remember that I'm not the only one who has it and has difficulties obsessing over things. I think time management would be helpful, thank you. <3

I get kind of upset watching those tutorials because I have a similar bone structure to them, and it makes me feel upset when I put makeup on and feel like I look like one of those men in heavy makeup. :(

I pluck my eyebrows daily, and they are strategically shaped to look more soft. They have helped a lot in terms of making my face look more feminine, but I can't decide if the fact they're so dark makes me still look more masculine or not! I don't know what else to do with them :(

I think the fact I've always wanted a more delicate, I guess "neotenuous" face/look but don't look like it is probably why I get so upset by my appearance. I'm constantly mistaken for being much older than I am because of my bone structure and coloring, and I think it makes me look like I have low-E even though I come from a family of people who are all chiseled the same way-- just way much more so than the rest of the population.

I always associated lighter hair with being feminine, and I think that's why I've always hated mine. I'm honestly torn on what to do with it. Seeing it as it is now makes me kind of depressed, and I want to try for a caramel/honey blonde color and bleach and tint my brows to match and look natural, but my boyfriend says he loves my dark hair and though he said he would always be supportive of me he is hesitant to accept any changes that I've proposed. Basically, if I stay the same like he wants,…

I'm not entirely sure if I really am on the PCOS spectrum or not. My only issue (that I can recall) was an elevated level of prolactin, that I suspect was due to stress, as well as the problems with my cycle. I am a little on the hairier side, but have thick hair on my head like my dad, and my mom has always had the peach fuzz I have all over, so I think it's probably just genetic and my BDD amplified being hairy as an insecurity since the contrast makes it more noticeable to me. My body shape i…

I actually have a boyfriend, I just feel like I need to keep improving myself in case something happens and I become single again. It is doubtful, but always possible. The main reason why I am still in strong pursuit of improving appearance is because I struggle to make friends and I feel like my face is the reason why. I always feel like there's something wrong with it and that's why I have a harder time than a "pretty" woman would keeping people interested and around.

I've already has a rhinoplasty because I was born with an awfully large nose. Wasn't it Oscar Wilde who said "There is nothing so difficult to marry than a large nose"? I feel like it was a worthy investment in myself, especially since my old nose made me suffer socially and romantically. Calling things you disagree with "fake" comes across as very demeaning. You're entitled to your opinion, but bashing other women's choices, especially if they're justified, is not kind and that really hurt my f…

Thanks for the recs! I’m just torn about my coloring because I prefer to wear white, blush pink, grey, and pastel colors in floral prints or lace, and it feels a bit odd to have an all-light cutesy outfit with almost goth/vampy coloring! 😬

I’m only 21, and I’ve gotten my hormone levels checked and found out that I’m on the PCOS “spectrum” but my hormones seemed mostly normal. I have BDD and I feel like the fact my face seems too “strong” and is a mismatch to my personality it is a source of distress for me.

I think that seeing a dermatologist about my skin issues might be helpful— I’ve only seen one before in my small hometown, and he was very rude and prescribed me something that made my normal teenage acne 5x worse and gave me burns. My only issue with contouring is my complexion— I’m white as snow, and any shades of brown or tan look like powdery dirt on my skin, and are always very obvious. Cream contour is completely out. Do you think maybe because my hair/skin/eyes are all the same color it i…

We are both the same age, he is 3 months older. It’s partially due to emotional blockage, but reading these comments made me realize that my other concerns are legitimate and I’m glad I’m not crazy for being concerned about them. I just feel inner conflict about everything that upsets me, like I have two inner voices. One tells me that I’m acting too uptight, that everything will just pan out and my expectations are too high for anyone to meet and to just be happy. The other one tells me that I …

His friends are his primary influence, and he’s set to live with them for another year. He’s getting tired of what they do and wants us to live together after our leases for next year are up, and I’m hoping the distance from friends will help. They influence the way he acts a lot, and since he’s around them more frequently than me right now I know that affects his line of thinking. They encourage the bad behavior like the weed smoking, drinking, and playing video games at every free minute. He e…

Thank you for the compliment and input. I wouldn’t necessarily call it a lack of ambition on his part, he has dreams, but none of them are very realistic. (Becoming a video game developer, becoming a Twitch streamer, becoming an actor/starting a band). He just flip-flops between chasing these pipe-dreams and good choices like getting an online degree, but won’t take the right steps pursue either. I really want him to stop being so frivolous with his little income and pay off his debt, but whenev…

We’ve been dating a little over a year, and don’t live together. He is immature, which is what I think I meant when I was writing but felt wrong saying outright. There’s definitely a difference between us there. We’ve had a serious discussion about this before, but I didn’t want to scold him like a parent would about not having his act more together. I certainly don’t have myself in the position I probably need to be in, so I didn’t want to say anything to him in that regard. He’s improved even …

When I was in high school, I dressed pretty conservative, then as I gold older dressed a little less modest, but now as a junior in college I only want to cover up more. I just think a midi/maxi dress will always look more elegant than a mini dress, I guess. I always get the most compliments on longer dresses.

No, but if I had to take a guess I'd say they suffer from depression based on how they act. They used to be very eager, driven women until they got pregnant/married. They act like shells of themselves, and it breaks my heart.

I spent an entire year taking care of two young children (that weren't even my own) from 6 am to 9 pm, every day Sunday-Sunday, while in school, cooking for my aging parents, and cleaning house. And I did fine. I cooked healthy meals, kept the house clean, laundry done, grocery shopped, entertained kids, and even had time to do schoolwork. I also helped my mom pay bills and budget since it stressed her out during that financially difficult time. So yes, I do have an idea of what running a househ…

If you don't like my suggestions, then you don't have to take them. Nobody has said anything about you or your own life, so if you don't feel like you are a SAHM trying to fill lonely time then ignore it.

I think that having several SAHMs in my family and close group who went from strong, intelligent women to mindless mombies is why I brought up the point, like I mentioned in a previous comment in the discussion. Not all moms were created equally, and while I think it is unfair to assume that all SAHMs are lazy (which I certainly don't believe that AT ALL), that it is also not right to assume that all SAHMs are great moms, either. I was merely opening up a discussion for moms to contribute and ag…

The post was aimed more at mothers who do have the time, clearly. With young children that's a different story, but if your kids spend the majority of the day in public school I don't see why a little of that time couldn't be spent on something productive in another way. If you and your husband have come to a financial agreement, that's great for you. Nobody mentioned going back to a formal university, just reading and keeping your mind sharp. :)

What was especially sad to me is that 2 of them had full-ride scholarships to excellent universities, but dropped out to get married and become SAHMs because of pressure from hyper-conservative parents/culture. Being a SAHM should always be a decision made between you and your SO alone.

Get-rich-quick schemes aside, I think investing at least in some quality bonds is important. I firmly believe that if done well, quality investing in both bonds and stocks can be done. An old friend of my father's actually turned their mutual friend into a millionaire within a year of managing his funds.

That's good advice, but I'm hoping I can see some return before I retire as well. I'm not sure if we're heading for a recession, but if we are and are in decent standing that would be a good time to buy stocks while the costs are low to sell them high later!

I was always the youngest out of all of our great number of family friends. Some of the girls I played with growing up that were 5-10 years older than me dropped out of college and settled down young, and aren't doing that well financially because of it. Not sure if they're just depressed, or don't care, but most of them quit trying to do too much outside of a weak effort of taking care of their kids. (ie mostly leaving them with grandparents for extended periods of time).

I think I'll still have to disagree about finances. I think even though the husband would be the primary breadwinner, since the wife is usually the designated budget maker who keeps track of accounts/bills and isn't too consumed with work, she could easily find a way to manipulate the resources for the betterment of the family. I think it should be either her decision or a joint decision if she is unsure on what stocks to buy/trade, and the husband should just contribute the cash with input if h…

Exactly! I hope that moms in the future will take the time to teach kids these things separately outside of school so that they understand that these things are more than just classes to pass. Even as a high schooler, I struggled with learning about these things because my own parents weren't too invested in making sure I fully understood these things beyond the context of memorizing correct answers growing up. Invest in your kids early-- it will help them out later!

I think studying science in general would be great to learn to teach your kids. It's amazing how little about the beautiful world we live in people know. Science and economics are the two best things to learn to teach your children young so that they can approach those subjects with ease as they get older.

r/investing is where I first got a taste of the excitement. The thought of being able to use that as a means to building a better life for my loved ones is what motivates me to learn. I don't have much money, but I'm trying to find a good book on investing to start with. Working from home is ideal for me long-run, and I have hope that at some point I can begin trading.

I just think its kind of odd that it isn't included or discussed much in the money management/budgeting role of a wife. Women certainly aren't too stupid to do it or anything, I just think that maybe the dumber housewives couldn't be bothered to learn it. I want to make my future husband happy by not only budgeting our money well, but being smart enough to make it multiply. Why not?
