So, I'm certainly not saying that people don't occasionally get away with it in practice, but I'm pretty sure you can find way more videos online of someone taking serious damage versus multiple opponents, so, I think, from the statistical point of view, the answer is that there is a high probability that you will "lose". There are various discussions over at Sherdog, in which the consensus seems to be you are fucked in the situation. Actually, there is a quote by Rickson along the lines of "tha…

If I'm going to train for street fight why would I assume there's only going to be one attacker? Interesting thought. I heard a podcast with Enson Inoue recently (can't recall which one), where he talked about wanting to set up a fight between himself and two moderately trained and well conditioned opponents. IIRC, he said that after researching it a bit, it seemed like too much risk for him. So, if he doesn't want to do that because of how dangerous it is, I'm pretty sure that you can pick any …

It also feels really great to be a little beat up, busted lip, cut eyebrow, bruises. You'll notice people will quickly look away when you make eye contact if you've got some face injuries, people tend to know you probably aren't a guy to be fucked with if you look like you just went a few rounds the night before. Agreed, agreed, agreed. Had lots of comments about various visual indicators of hard rolls, and often ensuing discussions. Girls will often chat you up about it, and sometimes you can g…

How would you combine it with lifting though? Not sure precisely what you mean. Being strong makes everything better, but, certainly, at least with respect to BJJ, there's not really any particular need to be able to deadlift 2+ times your bodyweight. Plus, BJJ takes a lot of energy out of you, and that fact alone will necessitate that you not have a really serious lifting schedule. Good luck.

... and it requires me to get in close to someone who is already attacking me with his fists and try and drag him to the ground. Yeah, I had this conceptual problem at first, but, in fact, there are fairly intuitive ways to achieve the takedown without taking full force blows from an opposing striker. The really challenge is what you do with them once you have them on the ground . . .

everyone is just going to vouch for whatever it is that they do. Yeah, I don't want to get into too much of a religious argument, but I guess I can make a few comments . . . When BJJ first came on the scene in the US, I wasn't convinced. But, what you see in the Gracie in Action videos is that, for the case of people who are not specifically trained to handle BJJ, BJJ always wins. Several points re: BJJ: Many of it's methods are somewhat "physically counter-intuitive" (at least for adults), and …

Ultimately, the tipping point was that I have several friends that have done it, one for >5 years, and one for >10 years, and they both still rave about it like it was their first week. I guess I would say the following: If you are looking for competition, choose BJJ. If you are looking for exercise, choose BJJ. If you are looking for self defense, it's a draw. There may be other, local dependencies (one is closer than the other, one is cheaper than the other, one has a better schedule than the …

A lot of people also get a lot of other stuff, some of which they may not particularly want, like their cat being run over by a car, or a brain tumor. What we really get are (1) the things we take, and (2) the things that nature/the universe/God/whatever imposes upon us, both good and bad. While there is a lot of agency for those willing to accept and use it, there will always be a lot of things that you have no control over . . . The universe is not fair, nor is it unfair; it just is.

Great, great post. RP gold. Best analogy to "partner history matters": Slut shaming is calling someone a terrible person for sleeping around, which is not at all true, but someone who sleeps around is usually a bad long term relationship prospect. Thats not 'shaming', its the same reason you wouldn't hire someone for a job that had 50 other jobs on their resume. Your past says a lot about your personality and suitability.

Whether or not you look it, you will know how to lay a motherfucker out if he comes at you. Maybe . . . Just stay away from the Brazilian communities in south LA and Orange Counties. Lifting and martial training have some complementary and some contrary aspects. I generally don't see anything wrong with doing both, as long as you aren't doing either as a serious competitor. Indeed, if you aren't particularly strong, then some additional strength will probably help your striking. Good luck.

Not at all surprising. I know multiple women (more than one being foreign national) who did a Ph.D. in physics, or chemistry, or biology at a Tier 1 research school, and then decided to throw it all away to be a SAHM. I don't care about the ultimate choice, but those educational opportunities are scarce, and giving them to people who aren't going to use them seems to be a severe misallocation of resources . . . I interpret this as a variation on abundance mentality. We do need various things, but be don't need any particular things. Consider the automobile example. In the US, most people really do need some sort of motorized transport. You may want a particular $80k car, but you don't need a particular $80k car (mostly, a C63 AMG is just as good as an M3). In fact, you probably don't need an $80k car at all, a 5 year old Honda Civic would be fine. Or even a little Vespa scooter . . . Don't let trivial …

Lots of good stuff. Comments: once a hernia happens, it doesn’t heal itself. It requires surgery, and that can be the difference between indolence and staying active later. The same goes for the orthopedic issues. Many can now be fixed to new or better, even more can be significantly improved via surgery. Need a little shoulder maintenance? Get it done. Yeah, this is unfortunate. The department that I graduated from wholly resisted this, with the result that the faculty was around 10% female, and the female faculty were uniformly incompetent. Great post. Only point I will argue is Social dynamics beats hard work any day. It is better to have drinks with the boss than stay late at the office. Hard work gets little respect. Politics is the only thing that matters. The popular kids in high school were right all along. This is much less likely to be true in highly skilled professions. Men are not exactly superior logically than women. If we go by IQ, as faulty as that indicator is, men are more diverse while women are more average. That means there are more high IQ men than women but there are also more low IQ men than women. Does than mean men are more or less intelligent than women? It means that the average IQ is (more or less) the same, but the distribution of IQ for men is much wider. There is no simpler way to say it than that.

conversation takes effort just like sex takes effort. Particularly if the conversation is about something you really do not want to talk about. One thing that most people don't really think about is that both "thinking" and "self-discipline" take energy (indeed, thinking takes a lot of energy). And, in this case, the majority of energy expended in having a conversation you don't want is associated with the mental processes, not the talking itself.

That's a very narrow definition of "accomplished." Yeah, I thought about that a bit before I wrote it, and I think it stands, if you take accomplished as "someone who takes on a difficult task and completes it". its just not worth it to give up a good paying job to get a small increase in pay. Well, kind of . . . Sometimes the increase is not so small, and some jobs cannot be done without that extra training. Want to create genetically tailored drugs, or solve complex temporo-spatial PDEs over arbitrary domains? How much money can you make with that? Agreed, completely. I would have had a lot more difficult time justifying doing it if I had had to pay $100-200k for it . . . So, I think there were several primary causes to the outcome: Undoubtedly, as the relationship went on, I got more and more BP. While I making a significant amount of money, my biggest failure was failure to hold frame in my interactions with her. This, and all of the direct results of it, were absolutely my fault. After we were completely done, she explicitly told me that she would never LTR up with anyone without a Ph.D. ever again. This is not my fault, or hers, but just the nature of women. …

I don't want people "bro-knighting" and trying to guilt trip men here for fucking women who were up for it, but were in a relationship. Western Society isn't going anywhere; I wish people on TRP would stop peddling that shit. If I recall correctly, cis- is the Latin prefix for "on the same side as", in opposition to trans-, which is "across from". I believe the idea is that calling normal people "normal-gendered", or whatever, implies that there is something wrong with trans-gendered people, so the normal people also got a nice Latin prefix so everyone is one the same level.

Oh no, I just meant the most obvious things, like (1) the things you want to do are not all inside your residence or otherwise naturally completely solitary, and (2) you do them long enough to build up some social contacts. Shit like that.

YOU pursue YOUR interests and your social life will fall into place with your happiness. Agreed, completely. Make a list of things you want to do, and things you want to try, prioritize them, start at the top, and work your way down. You won't get past the top five without getting some new social contacts, as long as certain caveats are met, of course . . . Good luck.

You just need to tone it down by a large amount, we get way too many carbs anyway. And change the distribution. Try to exclude completely sugar and highly processed carbs (e.g., white bread, fruit juices), and add (relatively) higher quality, less processed carbs (non-instant oatmeal, sprouted whole wheat bread, fresh fruits).

Agreed . . . It strikes me as somewhat odd that this would even need saying/reiterating/memorization. I guess I just have a natural sense of the transactional nature of human relationships, even if not in the purely economic sense. In any case, just try to be cognizant of the balance of value provision in your relationships, i.e., are both parties providing reasonably equal value to the other. If not, it's probably time to move on. Good luck.

That is undoubtedly true, and yes, I saw the flair. I guess I would I would claim the post is outside the spirit, but not the letter, of the rules of this sub, in the sense that this sub claims to want to deal with things how they are, rather then to attempt to change things. This post just seems a little too "complainy/changy", rather than just accepting and dealing with it.

Feminism has all but taken over the West but OP says women are stupid.... He could really mean stupid in a generalized sense . . . Just replace "stupid" with "not evil" (that being any kind of non-evil, but still pathological trait, e.g., stupidity, evolutionary traits, brainwashing, ...), and it can apply to any non-intentional, non-evil behavior.

That is, maybe a gel is not as high uptake, but then that would mean that you just have to take more of it to get the same effect. Is there any other qualitative difference, like the ability of the molecule to bind to particular receptors,…

You cannot be single and be long term friends with a woman who is also single. I do actually have one good female friend, but she is a unicorn, in the friend sense. Openly derides feminism with the credibility only a woman can have, and generous to a fault the the three-four people that she keeps close. I am also quite good friends with her husband. One benefit of having female friends is that you can run certain RP experiments (e.g., how to deal with shit tests, which my friend does, even to me…

It has nothing to do with gender politics. You are completely naive if you actually believe this. Consider the example of recess. At many schools, it is now gone. At others, it has been reduced to hopscotch, reading, and Tug of Peace. Either way, boys have now lost their ability to dump energy, and interact in a natural way with each other. So, they proceed to release energy in the classroom, where "zero tolerance" policies mean that just about everything, including fashioning a toy gun out of a…

I have had this discussion with numerous parents, and not a single one of them has ever told me that they treat their kids all the same for the sake of a "single standard". They treat their kids differently, as appropriate for each kid. Call it a double standard if you like, but a better way to refer to it might be "treating males and females differently according to their wants/needs/strengths/weaknesses/etc".

For brevity sake, this is not too bad. So, for each of these, you can probably reasonably assign some fields of study, and I'm guessing what you would see is the following, regarding current academic graduation rates: patents: men dominate products: men dominate lives saved: depending on what you include, somewhere between "men slightly ahead" and "women slightly ahead" enemies vanquished: men dominate

Note that losing weight too fast can cause long term endocrine problems. Slow and steady is the way to go . . . I suggest you go on a slight caloric deficit, with protein-heavy macros, and, as others have stated, a low-rep, high-set program, e.g., stronglifts, or whatever. Just note that some people (e.g., me) can't lift too heavy when in caloric deficit. From a generalized perspective, I kind of imagine that how this plays out in real life, for many well-adjusted people, is more or less how you describe: 2-3 "primary" missions, and 1-2 "subsidiary" missions, with a periodicity such that, at different times in ones life, one of the primary missions is dominant, while the other primary missions are "temporarily subsidiary", and once the current primary mission is mastered, then it kind of takes a backburner to one of the others. Yeah, maybe that wasn't a great analogy. We referred to courses of study as "Twinkie" when they required significantly less work than was required of us, which we usually measured by how much time someone in that major had to work in order to be successful. The reason this stuff is so scary is because the feminist agenda requires us to operate on the assumption that women naturally are as smart, creative and hard working as men. It actually might be fairly simple, but the functional dependence is not what the OP is implying . . . One of the details that I left out was that I am in no way claiming linearity in the process, i.e., I am not saying that "if a little caloric restriction is good, more must be better". Indeed, there is a sweet spot for weight loss rate, which is a function of how overweight one is. So, the following is probably an ok rule of thumb: more than 20% overweight, 1.25 pound per week is ok, between 20 and 10%, 1.0 pound per week is ok, and less than 10%, 0.75 pound per w…

Yes, but it is a first order effect. As a brief thought experiment, consider the following two cases: eating 5000 cals of keto a day, and eating (metabolism+exercise-500) cals of 50/25/25 carbs/protein/fat per day. I contend that you will gain weight with the first (thus keto is not sufficient) and lose weight with the second (keto is not necessary). I wouldn't say it doesn't work, just that the effect it has is pretty small, relative to, say, eating at a caloric deficit . . .

"When it comes to burning body fat simplicity is often overlooked ..." Agreed, so ignore everything but zeroth order effects, the only one being balance of energy. Is some high-level sense, that is a primary point of this sub, i.e., that there are differences between men and women, and you should not have the same expectations for them. ... the guy she's marrying is certainly an alpha: he's assertive, confident, benches 385 lbs. and drives a motorcycle. Yet he doesn't swear, doesn't drink, and is saving sex until marriage as well.…

She clearly believes that she cares about her boyfriend ... Well, on a conscious level, she very well might; we all know that their alpha seeking is, in many cases, subconscious. But even if she does love him, that doesn't make it any less likely that she will cheat on him again. Poor, confused little hamster . . .

It's always best to handle things in a way that allows people to save face. I didn't do that in my situations. I can just imagine monsieurhire2 growling "Get away from me, you crazy bitch." :)

Left with a man who let her become fat and mean ... This implies an interesting question. Assuming one is in a LTR, and it's not possible to prevent her from becoming "fat and mean", what is one's recourse? I presume it is nexting her, but I am curious what others think.

Good advice. I will add a few: Protein: leaner beef cuts, some high end jerky, and, if necessary, some protein powder (I like to mix it into oatmeal for breakfast and greek yogurt for a snack). /u/wttr mentioned the boredom of repetition, but when you are starting out, it can help to build habits. Data can be your friend to the fastest results. Tracking your eating, your weight, and your workouts can help you debug. “It's disappointing that Woodley [the actress] believes feminism is meant to elevate women's status at the expense of men, when in reality the goal is total gender equality.” What the fuck . . . What the quoted feminist doesn't understand is that even her stated goal is impossible. I have just learned over the years to operate on the assumption that everyone else wants to hear about my problems the exact same amount that I want to hear about their problems. Zero. Yup, this. It doesn't matter how good a friend someone claims to be, or you think they are, they don't really want to hear your shit.

I don't give a fuck about the karma per se, either. I actually view this place as a bastion of freedom, as cheesy as that sounds. And part of that freedom is self determination . . . I have no problem with TRP'ers here blasting posts into oblivion, but, frankly, it's precisely the kind of posts that others would like to blast into oblivion that we just might find the most interesting . . .

The key mental aspect of lifting that is developed over experience boils down to knowing when to push and knowing when to rest. Another aspect of this intensity modulation is knowing just how hard you can push yourself when you are in a caloric deficit. I have found that if I push my lifting too hard when I am cutting, I tend to get injured more frequently.

Nice story. I wanted to prove that I had no need for her. If anything my refusal seemed to excite her more. I'm sure you will get people here that will say that you should should spin her. As for me, well, my circle of friends generally agree that a good definition of a smart person is not someone who never screws up (as there is virtually no one like that), but rather someone who doesn't repeat the same screwup too many times. Regarding #4: not all fights can be won hand to hand. Knowing how to handle weapons of various sorts, and in particular, firearms, is also a good idea. Learn about and practice with a handgun, a shotgun, and a rifle, and you will be reasonably prepared.

My response to those people is to ask them about the hardest thing they've ever did in life. If it's not actually a really fucking hard thing to get through, then I assure them they won't believe anything I'll say. That is the right metric for determining whether or not to introduce someone to TRP. Probably not sufficient, but definitely necessary . . .

Definitely cannot give that one away. Understood. And it's not terribly apparent if you're a student, apart from the fact that you'll notice females getting an absurd amount of help from males students. On the teaching side it becomes a little obvious. Agreed. I was doing a fair bit of teaching, and from that vantage point, it was extremely obvious who the truly sharp students were, and very, very rarely were they women . . .

female applicants have lower entrance requirements, and are consistently graded higher in their work because they are a minority. Wow, really? What school is this? And are you specifically referring to undergrad or grad school? The problem is that most people in my class don't care about academia or medicine (most people are here because mommy and daddy want a doc in the family). I have some experience with medical schooling, and this is a known problem. I don't know how far along you are, but at some point, you should start associating with people in some of the more "hardcore" specialties (neurosurgeons, etc.), i.e., people who are super smart/talented and super driven. I noticed that you mentioned music. My experience in this regard is completely US based, and as such may not translate. However, depending on the genre of music you are into, one possibility is to hit up Craigslist, or Meetup, or the equivalent there, and look for people to jam with (CL) or meetups, which can be discussions/presentations, or just an organized night out to drink and hear some live music.

men are taken more seriously, especially with technical issues That's because men are naturally better at technical issues. Not to say that there is not a good woman mathematician or hacker anywhere, they are just much less common. N.B.: There is an episode of This American Life, entitled "Testosterone", where the second act is a female-to-male transgender person, and she/he explicitly mentions a much deeper understanding of physics after being on testosterone a while. Another possibility is to work it out between you and your friend, and she gets whatever is left, and if she doesn't like it, she can walk. WRT getting less rent for the smaller room, this is totally reasonable. The rent should be apportioned per unit area of non-community space, that usually being bedrooms and bathrooms. Otherwise, there is no economic incentive for anyone to take the smaller bedroom, and these kind of living arrangements would almost never exist . . .

This belies a subtle, but possibly important, point. It is not too difficult to have a muscled form, and we all know how to do it: decent training, eat at a slight deficit, and your %BF will drop. However, functional strength is a different story. Certainly, in absolute terms, there is almost no overlap between women's and men's functional strength. And even when normalized by body weight, there isn't too much. In all of the years that I have been at the gym, I have only known one woman who coul…
