For a lot of women, I tend to think this is an uncomfortable reminder of what a lot of men find attractive, and how they fail to meet that standard. It's painful because the this simple fact is staring them right in the face; "my lack of discipline and poor decisions in regards to my body have led me to this place where my body looks nothing like that anymore. Maybe it's largely my fault I don't get the attention I want from men."

It's not the same as free weights. Can encourage bad form, fixed travel path of the bar can lead to injuries, and you miss the benefits of having to symbolize the weight yourself.
