I didn’t. She left while pregnant but my state doesn’t have jurisdiction because they weren’t born here. In her state she could file for divorce without a residency delay. I was used. So I’m trying to move on as best I can.

I am paying for a 70k vehicle with her name on it . I am not fighting for the paid off vehicle that is pre marital too. I am keeping a 30 year old beater. The only thing I can think of is asking for more than 50% of the home equity because they have no money and rely on their elderly parents to live. Good luck getting her to write a check for anything. The commute for handoff is 500 miles one way. I get weekends only right now..

I'm going to sell the house. I think it will be a better financial decision. My interest rate sucks anyway - 7.15%. I'm paying $1900 just in interest. I really really appreciate your insight. The juice is not worth the squeeze. Thate just so oddly satisfying

It's not a lot after the division occurs. Some of my retirement contributions and gains were pre-marriage. But at the current rate (15k for two attorneys since this involves separate states for assets and custody) even then there's not going to be a lot left in this IRA. My pension is not a big target either. However they have similar accounts that I could be asking for half of since they were setup during the marriage. I mean lawyers are going to get a lot. I'm asking for each to pay our own at…

Yes in their opinion. The equity is likely 40k total. They are also coming counting on a sum of my retirement. But it wouldn't be more than the house equity. For me I just thought I would get as much as I could and restart fresh to pay myself back. I am dipping into my retirement anyway for attorney fees.

How will she steal the 100k back? I will pay child support no problem. Alimony is questionable given the length of the marriage is 4 years. If I ask for say that 100k she has to pay me, but I am paying her child support. I am not expecting that back because I make more and don't need it. I can agree to paying more than the minimum but still request she still pay me what is determined as half, for however long it takes.

I read somewhere about how this was done in North Carolina. My attorney however says that I gave up working to better the family, and those benefits were realized as my spouse quit working. But I'm also prepared for what you say too..

Selling the house, proceeds are split. If one stays the other buys the others equity or refinances half the mortgage onto the existing mortgage? It's really hard to know if it's better to stay or sell with so much money up in the air. If I can afford to stay, should I stay. I could use what I would get in the split to buy their half, depending on the amount. But is it better to keep that money, invest in other things or keep the house because of today's housing market?

Half of the student loans are tuition and the other half are living expenses while I was unemployed for 3 years since I was the high income earner at the time. We owned a different house then but had things happen like the water heater quit working, the furnace needed repairs.

I'm not remarried. Several friends are remarried, some with kids with that person. Successful, normal families. My parents also come from this background. I also don't live by anecdotes. I am not one to make blanket statements unnecessarily. I understand gathered facts, but consider them carefully. Probably because my graduate school years made critiquing evidence as a requirement.

Again, what's the context? White families? Study based on what data? You can be that person that blindly follows what they read, or you can be that person that digs deeper before forming an opinion and giving blanket advice. Not saying the number isn't high or shocking, but you need to be a critic of what you're reading.

Statistics are there but aren't the whole picture. In addition they are often plagued with bias. They will fail to capture the situation in a holistic manner. If you include socioeconomic status or race your statistics change.

It sounds to me there is some truth to this criminal part you are failing to explain. So she was experiencing PMS and you did what exactly? And that was okay and justifiable how? She's going to play this card to its fullest potential if there is any bit of truth behind it. I would be preparing to defend against this character attack.

While you may feel this way because that is the perspective you have in front of you, some people like myself will disagree completely. My perspective - my friends, their friends, their friend's friends, my co-workers etc prove your views to be inaccurate or false. I believe much of this comes down to where you live. As such I think your advice is incredibly specific and not a blanket statement for everyone.
