it was more like a breakup, but with intentions to return. we were long distance and uni+family+communication barriers were just doing us more harm than good. he made it clear he wasnt going anywhere but it was just best to love each other from afar for now.

I think you’re right actually.. when he talked about about the shampoo thing and praised their knowledge about it i got triggered cuz 1) i don’t need to be taught (stems from an insecurity of mine) and 2) i was afraid he thought the reason i didn’t have those things already was because i had no idea they existed. The reason i don’t want him to think that is because it sets up an image about me that i have no idea how beauty and hygiene works (and we both agree it’s important for both the guy and…

it’s just sounds really cocky and it’s normal to feel turned off and repulsed by someone who’s being egotistical. and more than that, it being your bf. like what is he trying to prove to me? it’s not rocket science to have the self-awareness to know when your tone and attitude might throw people off, you feel me?

My SO only gets like this when we’re having a debate on something and he will immediately use their behavior to back up his opinion

It just felt inappropriate to turn the conversation into a praise session for his family. Like another redditor said, it wan an opportunity to pump his ego through them.

he has had problems with them in the past in treating him like the families chauffeur, persistently getting him in trouble with his dad, etc. I feel like he’s been conditioned to think that he’s not valuable unless he’s useful and that he’s not man enough unless he’s basically sacrificing himself for their betterment.

Yeah you hit home with this! He seems to lack a bit of self-awareness.. I do think his family plays a part though, being the only son in a wealthy family of 5+ women. When he tells me stories about his mom or sisters, it’s as if they’re the ones who are conceited ,and think they’re the shit lol, and that they’re projecting that energy onto him, which makes him put them on a pedestal. Either way it’s still a problem, thanks for your insight!

Wow I love that you’re self awaree!! I guess it’s okay if you put siblings on pedestals on your own but it’s one thing to look up to them and share your thoughts and another thing to feel a sense of relief whenever they can exclusively make a conversation about only you and your interests.

You seriously put all my thoughts into words! For me it didn’t make sense at all to me for him to peg that i’m deficient because if anything, i’m the one who put him on a hair care and skin care routine lol, and he knows those are among the things i’m very invested in , so why is he assuming I know nothing? It’s hard for me to really accept that he’s wrong here because that would mean I have to bring it up and i don’t think he would even understand. Any tips?

I doubt he’s trying to be abusive i think they were just cases of him having his foot in his mouth because he doesn’t support me trying to change myself with plastic surgery or anything and is satisfied with me. For example, i’d bring up the fact that i wanted to start taking hair vitamins and use better shampoo. So he would go like oh nice i can buy them for you, my mom got these hair gummies that she makes everyone take. My sister (doctor) approved them. My mom and sisters are the bomb at anyt…

Yeah, that’s initially why I didn’t mind it then I started overthinking it, and now i hate it :). I think you’re right though, thanks!

Yeah his mom is pretty the conditional love type of mother. I’ll look more into that, thanks!

I think maybe it’s a reflection of what i would hate to see in myself. Thanks a lot for the insight!

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
