Very similar to cognitive behavioral therapy I use to combat my OCD. I hate putting myself in situations where I know I'll feel anxious or nervous but it does make things easier in the long run. Every time I give in to a compulsion, it gets harder to beat the next time. Similarly, every time you prefer to stay on the couch instead of going out or being social, it makes it more and more difficult in the future.
