Whenever it comes up have a very courteous and mature, two or three sentence response, you grew apart, and then shut the hell up about it and never bring it up ever again, she’s not your therapist. Listen more than you talk and ask some follow up questions if anything is interesting.

This is cold, harsh 10000% correct advice.

Do. Not. Vent. To. Her. When divorce comes up you need a 3-4 sentence answer that implies you take responsibility for your shortcomings and you are not longer hurting or angry or missing her, we just grew apart over time, and then change the fucking subject forever. Listen to her more than you speak. Congratulate her on successes, ask some follow up questions, do not sit there and talk about your own bullshit forever. She will care if she likes you, but it is absolutely a turn off too esp. first…

She sees this as a vulnerability she can exploit. Escape as soon as you possibly can.

Life is short. GTFO of there. She sounds like a shitty best friend. I’m very sorry, btw. Two years divorced here after 20 years of marriage, 30 years together. People change and grow apart. If she cannot be responsible for her contributions to the relationship you need to end it. She needs to be seeing a doctor about perimenopause. She needs to be seeing a therapist. She needs to be taking action and she’s not. You may also wish to look into covert narcissism.

If she lacks intention and/or self-reflection you should just spend your bucks on a lawyer because you will eventually anyway.

She’s hurting you intentionally. Look into the Grey Rock method. It’s a total game changer when you learn the easiest way to win these wars is to quit fighting. Not fighting back hurts them more than anything you could ever overtly say or do. If she sees you hurting over this she feels powerful. If you’re merely indifferent to it she’s just some nobody that bought some red underwear. Be a “grey rock” and watch her get sad and confused real quick because she no longer has any control over you or …

If she wanted to make things better, she would. Sounds like she wants out and she wants it to be your fault.

Married for 20, should have left 10 years ago. I moved out this time last year, and holy wow my friend it was absolutely worth it. Make your dreams come true. Lawyer up and get out. You can do it. Life is great over here on the other side of the wall!

In my experience the divorce took about a year. I got a place I could afford that first year and was able to upgrade once finalized. Short answer; budget for the worst and hope for the best.

My ex would “devalue” situations just to neuter me. Oh you think you’re providing and doing a great job? Well I’ll complain about it until you think you’re just fucking up instead. Some partners don’t want you to appear better than they appear, sad to say.

In my experience, it was because my ex is a covert narcissist and therefore a horrible mom. She’s glad to have the time away from her kids because she doesn’t actually give af about them.

Budget and prepare for the worst, hope for the best. After that one year lease is up you may be able to upgrade based on the outcome of the divorce. Hang in there!
