Read Francis Fukuyama origins of political order and political order and decay. Both books are hella long. Gives you a good understanding of why politics exist etc. I highly recommend you read the Wikipedia pages for all types of government and how western governments are ordered. Other than educating yourself on all political ideas and thinkers the best thing you can do is make $$$ so you can donate, or get an internship at a government office and work your way up.
