Every stranger deserves a base level of empathy, respect and dignity. What the fuck is wrong with you?

Everyone is entitled to basic empathy never the less someone who is potentially a romantic partner. Who’s acting more entitled here really? People saying you should be aware of your standards lack empathy or people like you saying “I don’t have to care about anyone else.” That would not fly at all if the demographics of this were reversed. Go look in the mirror and try not to let the mirror do all the work reflecting for you.

This is ridiculous. If your standards lack empathy and/or you are unable to meet your own demands you are allowed to be derided as a harmful person to have relationships with. People with whackadoodle standards need therapy and education on how to have empathy. Not to be enabled. If you are unable to be attracted to and/or love anyone unless they fit extreme standards something is legitimately wrong with you and you are emotionally dangerous to anyone you could have a relationship with.

Also, quite simply these progressives are just conservatives with a hat on that says “equality”. If you zoom out a good deal of feminism is exactly the same as conservatives: “Women and femininity are victims and angels that need to be protected and men are born evil need to protect and provide for women to be safe and secure.”, “Unemployed men are useless” and “Men don’t need help or deserve help and should pick themselves up by their bootstraps”. It’s the same paint color in a different hue. Z…

I have yet to see just about anyone on the left learning the correct lessons from the loss and allowing themselves to experience better insight of the nuance that is gender issues and empathy towards men. Simply starting to appeal to men because you don't want to lose elections is a disgusting first step, especially as it's been nearly two years and I've seen virtually zero difference in 99.9% of the left's approach towards men aside from slightly acknowledging the existence of their issues more…

It’s unbelievably disingenuous to frame abortion anywhere in the same realm as someone killing newborn or toddler. I respect that you feel as if abortion isn’t acceptable and believe it’s killing an innocent human life, even if I disagree. However you are shooting your own argument in the foot and being highly disrespectful to the grown men the original poster is advocating for and that suffered greatly.

This is partly true. The other part of the equation is that people here are willing to think deeply about things and delve into nuance and context. We are willing to discuss things in depth in a way that can’t be boiled down into simple catch phrases that allow the likes of many feminists and conservatives to be ideologically captured and use thought-terminating cliches.

They make people like Andrew Tate the face of men’s advocacy while conveniently ignoring the tons of female influencers, television shows, and more that spout and regurgitate heinous shit that would label them as Andrew Tate or even worse if they were men. We had people on the view over a decade and a half ago literally laughing at a dude getting his dick cut off and thrown in a blender, and presently daily TikTok’s from women with MILLIONS of followers and people commenting agreeing with them, …

It is so starkly cruel to not focus on the men in these situations. Legitimately, why is it so fucking difficult for the vast majority of people to focus on the men being victimized here? Societally we seem to react far more about the victims of the most minor sexual assaults that are harmless compared to stories of men getting falsely accused and having the entirety of their lives destroyed and even falsely imprisoned. We care more about random comments towards women than we do about men losing…

And how am I being hypocritical? You need to have specific, salient points and examples otherwise it just comes off as deflection. I’m very capable of taking in feedback and adjusting my views and actions accordingly. There’s nothing wrong with being wrong but I need you to present an argument and address the points I make. So far you haven’t even been able to acknowledge a single one never the less provide an argument against them. And you generally can be empathetic with men as a whole who are…

Criticism and analysis is not saying women are “awful”. That is the same black and white thinking (clinically from psychologists proven as distorted thinking. Look it up you may learn something about yourself, especially as that thinking is very closely associated with depression and mental illness) is what I criticized in my previous response to you. And you are very clearly expecting men to empathize with you and women overall, so why exactly is it such a problem to reciprocate, listen and und…

I don’t have much interest in the discussion but just wanted to add that your logic is flawed: You’re treating good guys and bad guys as a binary system where you’re one or the other. Just because a guy is good doesn’t mean he is being desired for having those traits, just as just because a woman is good doesn’t mean she is desired for that as well. And most people embody a combination of both. Theres also so many other things to take into account: there are good guys having sex and in relations…

I will happily admit men need to work on things in this arena. You can’t even acknowledge mothers emotionally repressing only their sons while fathers weren’t responsible even when being met with a scientific study without deflecting back on to men. So yes, you lack empathy.
/r/PurplePillDebate04/03/26 11:58 PM

They showed a literal study saying mothers have a gender bias against their own sons, when they are literal children, where fathers did not… And that’s your response? Completely lacking in empathy.

I understand an extent of the biological argument but it’s completely antithetical to every cultures stated value system which is to treat people equally and human life as precious. It also is antithetical to what you’re saying even: society is asking men to do all this but putting every barrier in their path to do it and abusing them whilst doing so. And while we’re at it we’re suppressing the vast majority of men’s evolutionary instincts outside of their desire for women. It’s fucking stupid a…

It’s odd because while I agree with you here many constantly complain and acknowledge real aspects of how the world is so unjust. Though many of the frustrations do boil down to men being scapegoats and their boogie man like you said.

It’s not just genital mutilation. It’s a daily occurrence for the joke of a video I see be the man is abused emotionally/physically. Literally saw a trending video of a woman saying “How slapping a man felt for the first time felt like” and insinuating it felt great to her. It’s a non stop barrage of the “joke” being unacceptable behavior or going “Look how bad/emotionally unstable I am and make it my partners problem because he’s a man teehee.” I used to find some of it funny but there’s such a…

There’s literal studies that show historically male dominated fields have had discrimination towards women massively resolve towards equality while discrimination towards men in female dominated fields has sustained, so your point is completely incorrect. You’re insistence in framing how women’s act of helplessness/incompetence heaps hyper responsibility and the resulting harm on men wreaks of a lack of empathy and twisting the narrative to make women victims while you laud men acting the same a…

If men are playing dumb and it forces women to do things for them, it absolutely is framed as negative towards the women have to do things. Women bash men constantly for "weaponized incompetence" and repeatedly call men privileged for having those women in their lives to do those things for them. It is an utterly ridiculous statement to say it is not a privilege to have the ability and room to "act like you're incapable" and have someone, and often society as a whole literally care for you and h…

“People also overwhelmingly and unquestioningly think that women had it harder than men historically (which I think is true, even though both sexes had it extremely hard historically…” I appreciate your post but I wish we could stop this kind of thought process. You said a blanket statement as if it was true, and you yourself omitted context. I didn’t say anything about women choosing not to date men. I logically turned your argument on its head because your premise was bad. As you said yourself choosing inaction when not replacing your brakes is an action that can cause great harm. I can however label societies neglect/inaction of men in various ways as an action that is causing direct harm to men. And frankly if women want men to be more attractive th…

So which is worse shooting an animal to kill it instantly or let it slowly starve to death? Is not fixing my breaks which could lead to my own and others deaths less bad than punching someone in the face? It is, by your assertion, an inaction so surely the action of punching is worse by your logic. Whether action or inaction is the morally right thing to do requires context. Also it’s philosophically quite debatable whether inaction is not doing anything. Choosing not to act is an action in of i…

Scientific method is incomplete if it’s not able to be replicated. You can have data on earths gravity because you drop something and it falls, but to prove gravity you need to drop something and have it fall to the ground. It also needs to be repeated in different environments to become an ultimate truth. Even gravity in this example is not universal as there are different rates of gravity at different places. It’s how we ultimately came up with the physics equation to calculate gravity and vel…

Yeah. I have said this countless times to most people but one of the reasons I express more discontent with people on the left, especially regarding men’s issues, is that I expect better from them while we are trying to fight against the insanity that is the current Republican Party together. Does it really mean zero obligation? Am I not obligated to operate better in a world when I empathize with how women are sexually assaulted? If I don’t adjust my actions am I truly empathizing? I would argue no. There’s far too much “that’s your problem” bullshit going on here.

In some parts yes. In many other facets there seems to be an abuse of men’s empathy toward women, and specifically a romantic interest. That is statistically extrapolated out into society as a whole on a macro level. The answer is not to devolve into a culture war of “fuck off and go to therapy”, the answer is to have more empathy for men and work on solutions both in the world on that macro level and individually, and not just tell them to go to therapy.

The first differentiator would have to certainly be consciously abusing versus unconsciously abusing wouldn’t it? And then make it into a scale of awareness: A psychopath purposefully causing harm, versus a narcissist aware of harm but compulsively unable to take accountability, to social deficits that block awareness of behavior and inability to tell cues that something is causing harm. It’s quite odd to me how we conceptualize harm in these discussions. On one end we have men with supposed men…

Except there is a ton of men on a daily basis here explaining how when they’ve shown their partners they are struggling they are treated poorly and abandoned. I’ve been treated like a burden for being upset when I’m childhood dog died, for being injured, and for being worried about finances and struggling. We don’t help men learn healthy ways to cope we DEMAND they cope. If men have to filter their vulnerability in ways to make it acceptable to women then that is not vulnerability.
/r/PurplePillDebate06/07/25 05:28 PM
6

Unfortunately it doesn’t happen in real life either, at least in romantic relationships. My friends generally are quite good at being vulnerable and accepting my vulnerability but if any vulnerability or insecurity effects my romantic partner it almost always leads to a massive problem in the relationship on my partners end.
/r/PurplePillDebate05/07/25 09:10 PM
56

I also take major issue with the idea that insecurity is something men shouldn’t have. God forbid we’re human and still allowed to have love and partnership. Shaming men for having insecurities is insane considering we’re supposed to be letting them be vulnerable too, but I guess we don’t really care about men being vulnerable and healing.

Because they don’t think they’re wrong. Their experience and view is “valid”. Meanwhile men who say they have not been able to show they are struggling without losing their partner are just misogynistic and it’s “not all women”. Meanwhile the research clearly shows women abuse their children more often and have biases against boys but none of that means a damn thing apparently.

I am generally very disappointed at anyone who uses violence in video games for an argument. What are you a republican congressman from 2005? Anytime the conversation is about men arguments seem to revert to old school boot straps type conservative rhetoric with no scientific basis at all.

I don’t think there entirely true. I also think in large part there’s a good percentage of people that are drawn to that kind of thing because of escapism, due to them not being happy. I was in a pretty niche group of a toy hobby from high school on, and I remember realizing every single person at a large meeting (aside from myself) was a child of divorced parents, for example. I also think negligence is a very real thing. I spent years asking for help from parents and about skin care stuff and …

It’s a cycle. As someone who started picky but had to learn to swipe more, it’s a result of women being hyper picky. I’ve met a lot of men who have had to go through the same process to have any success. I think the clear before to the after of men being not picky is women being overly picky. That’s not to say women shouldn’t be picky, same for men. They should. The goal should be to be picky in the right ways. Pickiness can be good, but it can also be extremely dehumanizing. You can be picky an…

I have never dated a woman that has not told me she shared details of my dick and our sex to their close friends. Every female friend I have is VERY open about it, down to even sharing the very intimate kinks their brand new partner. I obviously have a biased population sample but from everything I can tell it’s fairly ubiquitous. I shudder to think what has been said about me by women I’ve dated, even during the relationship. I got diagnosed at 21, and medicated up the wazoo, and my life quickly imploded. Every time I see anything on ADHD there is almost invariably a blurb if not the whole article being hijacked about "and it's especially hard for women!", and it genuinely infuriates me. It is beyond invalidating, and it does anything but match my real world experience. Ultimately I have observed the treatment of the two groups is vastly different: Basically ADHD for boys and men is an excuse, and ADHD for girls and …

It’s their go to. In every thread I’ve ever seen about a guy describing his abuse it’s always “not all women are like that go find someone better”. As opposed to addressing the behavior and trying to induce accountability.

I genuinely can’t believe how people on the left gloss over it. Just about every instance on the right slamming immigrants is almost always doing it to men. It’s similar to the way I see homophobia addressed by both sides. None of it will stop until we start recognizing the misandry involved and do something about it. The racism and homophobia certainly plays a part in their respective scenarios but we’ve been addressing those for decades, and somehow we’re still on the cusp of a Trump presidenc…

Why would you say fuck boys are praised when they are literally called “fuck boys”? There’s a whole name for them in the cultural zeitgeist, which means that they are not praised. Even before when it was “players” it was not exactly a term of endearment. There have been whole honor codes such as chivalry printed with how men are to treat women. Mean while male sexuality is often compared to bring an animal/beast. Sure it can go for women too but it’s not nearly as ubiquitous.

Genuine question, is there any social consequences for these women? One of my biggest frustrations from every relationship I’ve been in is that the aftermath it felt like I was often bullied into a war zone and was picking up the pieces of my life and myself. I had my own issues I needed to work on but it always seemed like they were gliding out into greener pastures with open arms no matter how poorly they treated me. This, and also start clearly stating and confronting the active hypocrisy of leftists in regards to men. My preferred method is to continuously point out their parallels with the right that they oh so vocally despise. They need to understand fully their beliefs are not even in line with their own supposed values. That is the only way I can think of to “reach” them and not just write them off as “bad” the way they do those other sects of people that want to address men’s issues.

Was the nature of women as subservient to men is centuries past something we could realistically change? We did. Violence and sexual violence continue to this day to drop year over year. We’ve long been having these discussions on rewriting the social contract, the door is already open and we are having these discussions. The reason most of us are here, now, is because all those discussions are very conveniently leaving out men. Either all of it’s okay or none of it’s okay, and it’s not okay to …

I think it is an uncharitable interpretation for her specific case. But I think in a cultural context of men being expected to continually give without expectation of receiving anything but a woman’s presence I think a statement like that is always going to draw ire as resentment has built up. It’s the same conceptually (from my point of view) of a man saying they look a “submissive” woman when many women grew up in hyper conservative culture just for men to entertain them with their presence wh…

I don’t mind any woman in my life, partner, friend, family member, turning their brain off. I’m happy to let them rest and take on a bit of extra responsibility for a time so they can do so. But they need to acknowledge the emotional and physical labor involved, and address the double standard in not doing the same for their partner. If I can only turn off once in a blue moon and put myself and my relationships at risk to do so, while I’m treated as a safety dispenser, then your desire to turn o…

I find the trend of women talking about that extremely disturbing. It’s so grotesquely infantalizing and foregoes responsibility heaping it onto the man. I understand completely wanting to be able to turn off your brain with someone safe but this idea that a good partner is your shepherd and has to stop you from wandering into traffic (an actual example I’ve seen) because you don’t want to think, and would never reciprocate (to the degree that relaxing, playing video games, and sleeping in are a…

I agree with you, but I think a very common pattern for many relationships like this is the one who feels they’ve settled takes it out and projects their frustration onto the other one. The relationship becomes subtly abusive and escalates and the partner that is “settled for” is reared abhorrently. Anyone can go “Well a person that loves me will not think they settled for me” and move on easier but that is rarely what happens, and if it does it generally takes place after quite a bit of belittl…

I see some answers but I don’t see very much data driven thought, so I will chime in with my thoughts: Men just do not have the same in group bias toward other men that women have. In fact in many areas they seem to have an out group bias towards women. We can look into whether this is environmental or biological but in both cases something would need to change with how we raise boys. Men’s language areas of the brain are smaller than women’s. The irony being this is their justification for continually viewing men ass lesser. Agree completely. I also despise how much how little critical thinking is involved. We correctly assess men doing steroids to be as jacked as a cartoon character as self inflicted, but so much of the emotional labor discussions seem to be fueled by controlling behavior: They are the ones who are taking on the responsibility and admonishing men for not being up to their perceived standard. I definitely get the whole paradox of tolerance thing. But the absolute brazen way we just abandon every ounce of empathy and tolerance in the current political landscape is unacceptable, and also, even if only from a tactical position politically, monumentally stupid. The “everyone says I looked tired when I don’t wear make up” argument is particularly damning. They are saying that because they are used to seeing you with make up. The sudden change is much more disturbing to the human brain and why it’s so much more staunch of a difference mentally. Like seeing a guy with long hair and a beard for years shave his head. I argue even with that tbh. Why is it always sexism for women being misdiagnosed? Is it not possible that we just don’t pathologize behavior from girls and women the same way we do boys? The data shows clearly we do as we punish them harsher at every age, both in school and in the justice system. In my experience on top of that young girls and women are just better at fitting in and masking (the language parts of their brains are literally larger from a young age), when most of our criteria for these disorders is about fin…

In what way did I say we should be pandering and capitulating to them? I said we should not be hypocrites and abandon our values and give bad faith actors ammunition to show we are bad and drive people against us. Even if it’s partly for optics we would still be adhering to our own principles. Which, as we all know here much of the left is absolutely not doing. Compromising our values won’t change their propaganda but it fuels their ability to garner support from people who are vulnerable. Plus …

DEI and the extreme conversations on either side of it is the perfect example of our political atmosphere right now. You are not allowed to disagree and have a nuanced, heartfelt, intentional conversation about what you like about it and what you don’t. If you disagree, I don’t care why you’re a bigot/wokey or whatever. If this was an individual in any personal context seeing a psychologist the therapist would say “That is black and white thinking. That is indicative of a mental health issue. Th…

I’ve read studies that show male teachers and fathers exhibit no bias towards their students/kids where as female teachers and mothers did in regards to grading and discouraging their sons to express sadness and anger. The common response I see from women about other women is “they have a right to choose” or “not all women are like that”. The latter is asanine and hypocritical when men are constantly made to be guilty for other men, and the former is ridiculous because it basically allows women to pick and choose equality or traditional beliefs at any given time. It lends credence to accusations of women flipping back and forth when it benefits them. In general though I have seen far too many women be enabled …

Their point is trying to downplay what women are capable of doing as perpetrators, comparing them to chihuahuas. It’s fucking disgusting. I would add that mathematically it makes sense that men would be driven towards more extreme based on less options romantically. Also too one thing I feel always is conveniently forgotten in many of the conversations about beauty standards is that some things are inherent within what we possess naturally and others are developed/earned. You cannot simply choose to be regressive in an equal society, especially because it opens the door for individuals to constantly change their mind when it benefits them. I think many men would dream of physical violence compared to the how cruel and Machiavellian women’s harm is. I was just mentioning this in another thread but I’d much rather get repeatedly punched by a bouncer at a bar rather than go 5/10/15 years and find out a child was mine was not the entire time. One of the interesting aspects of this line of thinking is seeing the reaction when the gender roles are flipped. If they continue working they have to work an absolute fuck ton of hours and often grind themselves to dust emotionally and physically (see the word in Japanese that literally means working so hard your heart gives out. Happens often enough they made a term for it there.), if you ease up your job to ease the stress many of your relationshi…

Every line she uttered is so completely predictable at this point. The same tired lines and buzzwords manipulated to put no responsibility or accountability on women. They cannot take in new information and adjust their thinking whatsoever. These people mix their ideology in concrete thinking both that it won’t ever change, and never needs to be adjusted based on the context. It’s the same dumb ass attitude that seems to think women can’t be sexist or minorities can’t be racist.

The judging part bothers me a ton. Not least in part I have been urged to not judge. I do my best to be an empathetic and understanding person to all people, dating or not. In dating as a straight guy there is an unfathomable amount of criticism, said and unsaid. I find myself become increasingly frustrated at the hypocrisy in all of it where I am continuously judged for things where I would be an absolute asshole of a human being, not just partner, for doing the same thing. It’s especially infu…

I have never ever seen that. The only thing I’ve seen is when men are the primary provider, working longer hours, more physically laborious jobs, etc. they find it unreasonable to be expected to also still participate in chores at an equal level. Especially when they are not as particular or fastidious as their spouse. Even sexist, traditionalist jack asses maintain that men should be the ones working and providing, and just want their wives to facilitate the home so they can focus on that in ex…

A quote I saw recently that has had me attempting to shift my perspective related to this: “For we each of us deserve everything, every luxury that was ever piled in the tombs of the dead kings, and we each of us deserve nothing, not a mouthful of bread in hunger. Have we not eaten while another starved? Will you punish us for that? Will you reward us for the virtue of starving while others ate? No man earns punishment, no man earns reward. You’ll find other answers, but ultimately, psychologically many are just short sided. They want to look good to those around them and feel good. Moral grandstanding on an issue they don’t actually have to act on accomplishes that perfectly. And it’s an easy issue to be on the right side of. I can see people mentally patting themselves on the back when I see them use idiotic thought-terminating cliches often times. I think it’s more complicated than that. I don’t want us to fall in the same black and white fallacy trap I see feminists do. There are “two lefts”: There is the social left, the woke mob types, and the status quo left. The latter is more akin to most European countries right wing. There seems to be a rather large compensatory effect based on how extreme our right wing party is. As the right wing has gotten more extreme many are getting frustrated and pulling left. The two main tenants of biological life are survival, and reproduction. It could be argued that reproduction is survival in a way, just through genes. The huge irony of that being so much of homophobia and transphobia is rooted in misandry. I rarely ever see trans men or lesbian women get the amount of heat trans women and gay men do. Most I think would agree with you. However, I think the really insidious part behind the curtain of that is how little choice we are actually giving men, as making that decision is not in a vacuum. Arguing against the draft, while something I do think should be abolished, wasn’t the point of my post. The point was that, draft or no draft, men are being called to sacrifice themselves and their wellbeing. And until that is worked on, “draft culture” will still exist, and even if the draft be abolished, will just begin again at some point in the future. It certainly is slavery. I’m talking specifically in some moments. Chain linking arms down a hill into a river to save someone that’s drowning. And even then women need to be involved now. The overall arching problem: Men socially demanded to put themselves in harms way so women are “safe”, and are punished for not doing so. That’s essentially what I’m saying here. “Draft Culture” is a fantastic phrase for it. I have been seeing a ton of videos recently of women lambasting the men around them for not putting themselves in harms way when a guy with a gun approaches her, for example. Perhaps I didn’t use the correct word with symbolic. But if we do abolish the draft, it will be symbolic just as the white feather is symbolic to men’s struggles with expecting to put themselves in harms way. If we want equality, we have to address that men are the one in day to day that are expected to be willing to sacrifice themselves, whether it be physical altercations or grinding themselves to dust on the job physically and mentally.

You are right for sure. The only problem is even in a situation where both sexes are drafted there is likely still going to be a separation and women are not going to be treated as expendable. The two are incomparable unfortunately after a certain point. A one time lifetime commitment is very different than a continuous series of acts that can be given and taken away at will. There is two parts to these conversations that I feel must be touched on: Any discussion about evolutionary psychology that paints women in a negative light and paints men in any light that leans toward being even slightly a victim in some ways is demonized. I think mutual abuse is a rather vague term and there’s needs to be way more behind it. If someone gets abused for a period of time and now, at their emotional limit, fights back once is it now mutual abuse? I agree with you in part, but we actively have tons of discussions around the morality of various aspects of men’s biological proclivities. Even if it’s not “changeable”, it is certainly our moral obligation to discuss it and bring awareness to it. Even if we don’t agree with someone’s principles we at least respect them because they have principles they want to follow, and are consistent with them. So not only do we feel emotionally betrayed when our issues are ignored or played off as “not the same” or lesser, it is philosophically devastating. It makes men n…

As someone with adult diagnosed ADHD I feel it’s pretty similar. Seeing discussions veer towards women with the statement “AnD iT’s PaRtIcUlArLy HaRdEr fOr wOmEn” while I’m dealing with a disability that’s wreaked havoc on my life and wellbeing makes me want to scream. Most of the women I know with ADHD also seem to get a ton of leeway on issues that I just don’t: socially especially. Do these people think Emmitt Till didn’t suffer at all from a false accusation? I genuinely don’t understand their logic. We need a whole as justice system and laws outlawing vigilantism to protect the integrity of human rights and enforce even when people DO commit crimes so we’re not lawless angry mobs, never the less dealing with people who are falsely accused. What an insane way of thinking.

Loneliness in men clearly was mostly absent in large swathes of society before the absent of social media. /s. It exacerbates some problems but give me a fucking break. I see blame on social media in every thread here and it completely ignores so much history. Not to mention social media also creates an insane amount of connections. Sorry it is a pretty broad question. So just looking for any insight from your perspective. I mean in the sense that as a woman, how do you see scenarios of women taking accountability? Behind closed doors in a room full of women do they speak to each other differently about being accountable? Do you speak to each other and hold each other accountable? How do you see how other women treat their partners in heterosexual relationships?

Out of curiosity, as I’m guessing you are a woman judging by your username, what is your perspective on that (having discussions about accountability with women by both men and women)? I’m very curious how it looks from a woman’s perspective.

My closest female friends are great at taking feedback. There’s a reason we are so close. My romantic partners historically have been terrible at it, as well as ex friends for that reason. Mostly because if I don’t toe the line of agreeing with them the friendship can essentially end. But yes largely I both find women difficult to have those types of conversations with, as well as generally don’t see them have those conversations with each other. I also can’t stand the lack of continuity when sp…

I would be more okay with it if it was applied in both directions. I would love to see feminists and women in general hold other women more accountable. Women who abuse children, emotional neglect of boys/men, abuse the court system, financial abuse through gender expectations, false accusations, bias in education and the work place, emotional abuse… Instead we just see the same analogy used to minimize those factors. “It almost never happens!” It’s quite maddening. Men opening up and being vulnerable also does very little in terms of solving their problems. In my experience people will listen to men talk about their problems, but care very little to actually address them. If you solve a broken bone that person won’t have a broken bone to complain about. Instead we wait until it heals incorrectly and the person is permanently stuck with an injury they will complain about for the rest of their life, and over time we get tired of hearing them talk about it an…

One underrated aspect I think in this discussion is physical health. We are so incredibly negligent about men’s physical health, which has a direct impact on their mental health. We encourage men from a young age to ignore their own well being, and even sacrifice for others, particularly women and children, and also encourage them to be far riskier with their physical health. Some of this is obviously innate risk taking built in, but I and so many others were constantly shamed for being cautious…

I would say from the obvious political capital they get from pandering to women’s issues, at least in part, the massive backlash they would get for proposing anything to help men. Even acknowledging men are in need of help beyond “men should go to therapy or share their emotions/hug each other” just get such intense amounts of vitriolic retaliation. This is super interesting. I would say that just because someone understands the topic induces polarized responses does not mean they understand exactly why it does. I know too many women who are feminist, who treat relationships transactionally and want traditional relationships and are baffled at the slightest bit of push back. They just don’t understand why anyone would be against feminist arguments at all, even in their own interactions being obviously hypocritical.

I believe this is true though I’d love to see the data again to confirm. Also, I can’t believe no one takes this into account, but if one is to succeed they can’t attempt again. People who don’t succeed can. And if they are still mentally unwell likely will. Just a sum of suicide attempts per gender doesn’t take this into account. My main issue being in the reverse situation, no matter how difficult of a situation or depression the man is facing it just seems like the answers would be wildly different. I would say the technology is doing more continuing the behavior as opposed to causing. All the behavior is scientifically observable before social media and without social media. Meaning fixing social media or getting rid of it is only a band aid at best, and ignoring giving accountability to people who would display that behavior even without social media at worst. Fix the problem not the symptom.

It definitely is. It’s genuinely irksome watching conversations unfold about tendencies men share with other males of the animal kingdom and state how men need to police each other and themselves, delving into moral philosophy while conveniently leaving women out of the discussion, and just generally developing amnesia when it comes to science that paints women in a less than angelic light For example.

Not sure. Maybe a bit of both. I hope it’s traditional culture more than biology because that means these things are fixable. If not I’m not sure where we go from here. Regardless though we’ve had very prominent conversations around aspects of men’s proclivities that can seem biologically ingrained and we all agree some of those are not acceptable, but we are essentially forbidden from doing the same with women.

Taking women and many other demographics into account doesn’t mean we don’t stand up for ourselves and hold women accountable. It just means not being hypocritical about our values and making sure we are interpreting data subjectively and not through an ideological lense or letting our frustration allow us to treat others unfairly. That’s all. Otherwise I fully agree with you.

I don’t mean “women’s issues should take front and center and we need to cautiously talk about men without stepping on their feelings.” The whole reason this place exists is because we essentially became politically homeless. I have a few female friends that let me cry it out and let me have my depressive spells without judgement, and I would move heaven and earth for them. Though they are very equality minded and wouldn’t even let me if I tried.

Both men and women were involved in making those decisions. So clearly it’s not a gender issue, but more of a personality type that seek powerful positions issue. I worked for a campaign in college and bailed on that life when I realized I would have to sell my soul to get to a place where I could enact positive change, and I’m certainly not the only one. People with good hearts bail out of that field in droves.

I always find this idea of patriarchy so funny. I feel like a lot of people in general are unable to identify that just about everything in the world has both an up and a downside. You can eat anything you want but you can be unhealthy, you can be hilarious but often people won’t take you seriously. Wisdom is being able to do the right thing at the right moment. It’s something you have to learn and cultivate over time. Men are a great number of the leaders and leadership positions yes, but those…

Even when a party is bad, that does not mean they are condemned to being bad forever and are beyond redemption, nor does it mean they deserve to be shamed and abused by shit tons of people on the internet. Absolutely disgraceful.

If you’re ever confused about how someone could say something like this so flippantly, it’s because they don’t think it’s harmful. Either that, or they believe the harm is warranted. Which is equally terrifying.

I have to say something that’s been bothering me about this line of thinking. For all the complaining of how targeted these women say they are due to their gender and their perceived vulnerability, how many are actively taking steps to adequately defend themselves? I’ve known a lot of women in my lifetime. The number that take any sort of self defense courses, work out beyond the basic cardio with the purpose of being able to adequately defend themselves etc. is less than 1%. I’ve known one girl…

It’s understandable to be against communist states. I think that people on the left that display Soviet flags etc. are extremely misguided. But don’t mistake social safety nets and a general welfare state for a full blown communist dictatorship. There is a healthy equilibrium where social policies no capitalistic ones can coexist, like most of Western Europe.

This is insane. Completely fucks with a lot of the narratives about male perpetrated violence.

I wasn’t talking about incels, but violence in general. But I wholeheartedly agree with you in regards to how incels are painted. It’s quite despicable.

Ironic, considering addressing it would help reduce violence against women drastically.

This is fascinating and I agree with this quite a bit. Though one factor I would like to add is that, from my experience both personally, and observing others is that men are often punished for showing their struggles. I’ve had my own parents get quite upset at me for literally being in physical pain and expressing as much. Even as a young lad.

Funny you mention it: I’m a poli sci major and an advocate of horse shoe theory. (In so far as you can be for a theory I guess?) Though I also think the spectrums we use to describe the types of thought are woefully inadequate at capturing the depth of complexity.

This is fascinating. It makes me feel slightly vindicated. My experience has always been that the women in my life have been much more avid about their religious beliefs/abortion etc. Always been confused when conversations about abortion refer to specifically “only men wanting to control womens bodies.”

Nor does she give citations for her assertions against man/for women. And zero context as you said. Completely pseudo-intellectualism.

Absolutely a larger phenomenon. Just look at all the “research” showing how many issues women have comparatively. The twisting of every societal issue to show it’s tougher on women. The demonization of men in general. If you question it you’re not just an asshole you’re an uneducated, science-denying asshole. Academia playing into it is certainly part of the equation. Comes across like the intellectualization of misandry.

I cannot stand the discussions around emotional labor. According to wikipedia emotional labor is fulfilling the emotional component of a job. I.e. Pretending to be happy listening to a customers shitty joke. Or pretending that you're not bothered by being dressed down by customers/management because you messed up. Being upset that your partner is not helping around the house is just... labor. And if they are unhappy about their partners contributions around the house they certainly aren't puttin…

I understand why it’s healthy to avoid social media, but I just don’t agree with this in the slightest. My entire life (at 30) I’ve seen women in real life saying men are disgusting. From children to grown adults you mention the idea of seeing a guy they know being naked and a good portion of them well just go “ewwww”. Not to mention that these people exist in real life too. Yeah twitter is a cesspool, but I’ve had to deal with people like this at an increasing rate over my lifetime. Most of who…

I’ve dealt with this a number of times. Seems to be fairly common. The biggest issue with it is being labeled sexist for calling out the hypocrisy or standing up for yourself. It’s partly cultural and a lot of women have that entitled attitude. But I always get frustrated with men who enable that shit. If men were as consistent as women were at holding women to certain standards I think a lot would change. Unfortunately romantic and physical intimacy are so rare for a lot of dudes, combined with…

This is atrocious. I’m incredibly sorry you had to go through this. I’ve been through similar stuff. I was an incredibly emotionally abusive relationship for about a year, and 6 years later it still bothers the hell out of me. I still wince abd ny heart races whenever something feels like it could lead to an argument. I was called a cunt so many times I just became comfortable with the word. There were times when I didn’t even recognize myself as I got sucked into that dynamic. If you ever need …

I hate to say it, but I feel as though a lot of men aren’t full human beings in the eyes of a lot of the world. Just imagine if the Uyghur genocide in China was all of one gender and what the reaction would be, and contrast the different reactions. In that I think we have our answer. And it’s not a pretty one.

I agree. I may have made a mistake in my writing because that’s what I was inferring. I do feel that there is something wrong with the “only men can hold men accountable. And women other women.” attitude. I don’t need to have a vagina to recognize when a female friend is doing something fucked up. But that may be an entirely different conversation.

I do partly agree with you. But at a certain point as a society we all also need to be responsible for each other as well. Everyone needs to take a good long look at themselves and help each other with all this. There is no excuse to let abuse in a person to fester to the degree that they become a serial killer. Just as there is no excuse to let mental health issues fester until they feel compelled to commit suicide. The sad part is we recognize that as a collective for a lot of issues involving…

This whole idea of virgin shaming really seems to play off the whole “believe women”/“the woman is always right” dynamic to me. It perceives that the woman’s desires in a partner are “correct”, almost as if they are infallible. It’s never possible for a woman to have poor taste or expectations, and if the guy is not getting women interested him it’s only ever an indicator of his shortcomings. It reminds of the phrase “well if everyone you meet is an asshole, you’re the asshole.” In these context…

Mimi’s character at least defends herself. I would describe her more as a feuding character with the protagonist than a “punching bag”. Chevy chase in community, Howard from BBT, strike me as much more pure punching bag characters.

If he was more up front about being wrong and adjusted as he went that would be one thing. That’s something we collectively as a society need to be better at. But dodging responsibility when being wrong is incredibly disappointing.

It may not claim to be but it wraps itself up in a package and advertises itself based on the idea that it portrays things factually. And more to the point people take their assertions seriously. Therefore they need to be held to the same scrutiny as any journalistic entity.

Their empathy tends to strike me as narcissistic because they are only able to empathize with people like themselves. It always struck me in my personal life when I see it that it is like they saw other women as echos of themselves. As soon as that facade is broken they no longer feel empathy (see how they treat conservative women, for example).

*“I hate admitting it but what the left sells as womanhood is very appealing. I know it’s a lie that women are more empathetic and altruistic than men but it feels like a definite improvement to be perceived in that framework. The difference in perception is a huge factor in my feelings, I think.” * I think by sorting through these types thoughts in a more nuanced way you may be able to help your mental health. All or nothing thinking is super common people with depressive tendencies, etc. Maybe…

On an individual I agree with you. On a macro level, if “basic Gen-z white girls with nothing but trendy internet-fed thoughts” is the norm then we likely have a very big problem.
