I suspect it was more a case of being 'too afraid to say no outright'...at least in the latter incidents. That does tend to happen with rape victims. But even without a verbal 'no', you'd think body language would still be a pretty big clue. I for one won't sleep with a woman who's anything other than clearly willing. Who'd want to anyway? Well, the drugged & raped thing may be on the edge of believable. It may be that the police could find no evidence whatsoever (especially if it wasn't reported straight away) and couldn't proceed with the case. And in her anger she has interpreted that as 'they did nothing'. But I really cannot believe that the police would ignore someone who'd been 'beaten with a tire iron and left in a wheelchair'. That's where her credibility collapses entirely.

The general belief among feminists is that rape is under-reported by orders of magnitude. It would have to be, if the 1-in-4 or 1-in-6 statistics have any truth to them. Ditto for the claim that 1 in 6 men suffers from some form of sexual assault in his lifetime. Problem is, that whole issue of sex crime is so wrapped up in moral panic, victim culture, and bad science that it's virtually impossible at this point to determine what the truth might be.

As the article noted, the aversion to killing seems to apply even when faced with imminent death. So the 'people will do anything to survive' thing may be a bit of a myth, at least for the majority of the population. Other scholars have carried out their own research and found a similar result, and it appears to be pretty widely accepted - including by the US Army. A flawed idea on many levels. Some kind of 100% effective, side effect-free male contraceptive that doesn't require regular pills/injections etc would be the way to go. Failing to prove a case against an accused rapist is not the same as proving the accuser lied. To convict a false accuser would require the same degree of proof as any other criminal conviction. Genuine rape victims are not at risk of being charged with a crime simply because their case could not be proven to the satisfaction of a jury.

I get the impression, both from the number of false rape cases that get reported in the press here, as well as from some of the comments that police have made to the media (reading between the lines a bit, I'll admit) that they're pretty wary of making such an assumption. How do you define the guilty party, though? Problem with DV is that it's rarely entirely one-way. There's usually a degree of physical assault and/or psychological abuse from both parties. I don't think the "guilty party" can be determined by a simple rule like "Whoever hit first" or "whoever hit hardest". I've read elsewhere that male circumcision increases the risk of similar injuries to the vaginal/anal tissue of the 'receiving' partner. So even if we accept this study as valid (in spite of at least one obvious flaw - no mention of any control for changes in sexual behaviour following the surgery), all we're doing is trading one risk for another. And all of this is getting in the way of the one thing that is guaranteed to make a difference - safe sex education.

By & large the women here in NZ are pretty sensible: My experience is that they take equal responsibility in relationships (breadwinning etc) and, the occasional joke aside, tend to respect the men in their lives as fellow human beings.
