At 31 years old a man should not be needing to move in with a woman to ‘save’. He can marry and provide for you, or he can move in and assume the bills and a hefty chunk of the rent, but what on earth kind of quality man wants his girlfriend to pay for his lifestyle? And why are you paired up with a man who thinks this is appropriate? A quality man moves in and lifts your financial burdens so you can save. A quality man cares about your finances and helps you safeguard your money, not spend it s…

It’s a convenience store. I’d bet money he had single cashiers working and his employees didn’t feel safe there alone. I worked at a gas station in high school and creepy old men were a huge issue - they know which businesses have young girls working alone - and my boyfriend used to come hang out all the time with me because it wasn’t safe.

I get this, and I’ve experienced it, and with all love I’d suggest that a lot of this is about elevating the (projected) opinions of people who don’t deserve a seat at your table or a second of your time. Who cares what people think about your career change - is it working for you? Is it meeting a need you have? Are you building a future that works for you? Life gets so much better when you stop caring how other people may be judging your choices. You don’t have to deal with having a sense about…

My dating pool is men with kids who are teenagers and up, and it’s astonishing how many of these men who are ‘bad at texting’ are truly excellent at texting with their kids: memes, links to news articles, recipe swapping, advice, etc. They can text; they just are putting the effort in for women they date.

I’d respond, “that sounds fun! I can’t wait to meet your wife!” It’s hilarious to watch them explain how, as a married man, they are asking you out. The mental gymnastics! Hilarious.

Pass on him if his profile says he is using the free version of the app. “I can’t see likes!” It’s really them telling on themselves that they aren’t invested in seeking a relationship and when you are on the free version the pool of profiles you are shown isn’t as good. I want to see that they have enough skin in the game to be paying for it, and not just randomly swiping through. It also weeds out a lot of scammers and married men. Men who pay for the app have higher standards for what they ar…

They are totally desperate for real women on dating apps - it’s why men see so many fake profiles. My ex is on the apps and he gets messages all the time from bot accounts, and we laugh about how many hot flight attendants apparently want to date him. So many of them! A startling percentage of profiles men see are either sex workers, sugar babies, men cosplaying as women, or bots.

Yeah. This is just weaponized incompetence, and when do it all we are doing is rewarding men for using weaponized incompetence. And boundary pushing, to see how little effort you will let him get away with. So much of it comes from how women raise their sons, I think.

If you ‘deactivate’ your profile but the app’s algorithm suggests you have a higher than usual conversion rate, ie, men switch to the paid version after seeing your profile? The app will reactivate your profile without telling you, and use it to boost paid subscribers, and/or use your photos on a fake profile. It will also show it to women looking for women. It’s so creepy.

Amicable divorces happen all the time. Some people grow together in a marriage but for lots of others, their personal growth trajectories have them ending up really far apart from each other as time passes, and it’s better to just call it, divorce, and find someone who’s trajectory is a better match. We are so used to hearing the awful stories that we don’t hear the quiet ones, with amicable splits.

To be invested enough in gaming that you own a special, enhanced gaming chair is problematic because the hours it takes to get to the level your chair choice matters is time wasted, that could be better spent moving your life forward. This isn’t a ‘I play an hour or two a week to de-stress,’ chair, or a ‘once a month the guys and I play a little C.O.D.’ The rule of thumb is 10,000 hours to play with mastery. For perspective, 2100 hours is the average time invested in a Masters degree in the US -…

You didn’t fuck up. You were 21 and he was 36 and he is a monster and he went after you because no woman his age would date him and he took advantage of you. You did nothing wrong. You didn’t accept a LVM; a LVM manipulated you because your age made it easy for him to do so. He is clearly still gaslighting you because he is a selfish asshole. So please forgive yourself. Be gentle with yourself. And recognize your worth.

Do both. Be a hands’ on volunteer for a cause you are passionate about, and be on the Board of another org whose mission you support. I’m on the Board of an outdoorsy non-profit I’d never have the ability to get hands’ on with, but believe is important. It’s a nearly all male Board, all men who are interesting, smart, and wealthy enough to devote time to a cause.

Get on the Board if you want to give back. It’s all HVM/W there, chosen for their exceptional hard and soft skills. It’s where the power for real change is enacted, so it’s win-win. Pursue a Board seat: it’s fantastic career networking, you meet wealthy people with altruistic hearts, and you do real, lasting good in the world. Ands it’s a fantastic resume item.

The kinds of men that turn into texting buddies are just using OLD to get attention from women to boost their ego, and very likely aren’t single. If you’ve sent a day or two of messages, make your last one this: “we should continue this conversation over dinner.” And then accept no excuses for why it can’t happen. He either asks for your schedule so he can plan something, or he gives excuses. Block that guy. It can be a real ego boost to have a man texting you, but if they aren’t trying to meet …

This is terrible advice, in part because it advocates hiding your light in lies to affect a man’s choices. Men diminish our light enough on their own; don’t extinguish your own flame for them. Also, a HVM is never going to date a woman who plays these games. He wants a woman who is crushing it in her own life. Better: be all your awesome. All of it. Just don’t hand any of your awesome to men until they earn it. Drive a hot car? Don’t loan it to him. Gourmet cook? That’s a treat you give him, not…

If a man starts telling you about how crazy his ex was, just run. Not because he’s probably lying, but because you aren’t vetting her behavior and choices, you are vetting his, and he chose to be with her, and be in a relationship with her. That’s on him. What is the appeal of a man who would voluntarily let a crazy woman into his life then hold on to her?

If you are married do not, under any circumstances, suggest to your spouse you want to end things until after you have retained legal counsel and had them help you figure out your position. In a perfect world you want your entire divorce drafted up and filed the day you leave, with a support agreement attached so that you are supported financially. Doing this guarantees he can’t drain your shared assets because your lawyer will have your entire financial picture before he knew you were leaving a…

This. He really told on himself here. He sounds like a bit of a sociopath - he knows to plan dates and pay, but he’s also toying with you a lot. The fast walking is such a manipulation tactic. He sounds stressful and with so many kids he’s a lot to take on. I will say it’s not always a red flag if someone divorced after 20 years. That’s often a fairly amicable time to call it as the kids get old enough to not be traumatized by divorce. What is a huge red flag/manipulation tactic is suggesting he…

Closure is a myth we sell to women to keep them permanent pickmeishas, encouraging them to keep looping back to NVM, convincing them that somehow a man not good enough to keep her will have some reason why he isn’t good enough that they can use to excuse his bad behavior, or rationalize why they bought into sunk cost fallacy and stayed in a relationship way too long. It’s pseudoscience, and about as valid as a Buzzfeed quiz. And much like horoscopes, confirmation bias makes people feel like whatever answer they got was a legitimate representation of themselves because every answer is calibrated to do that. As a certified Old Person, I’ve met loads of poly people, throuples, policues, etc, and I’ve never seen anyone be truly successful at it. It’s such a high-drama way of living, ‘compersion’ is complete bullshit, and the whole thing seems to be designed for men to bang a lot of women, with permission. I am here to tell you all your 40s are so fun. Like, seriously fun. You have a bit of money, it’s likely you are settled in a career, and every mistake you made in your 20s is fixed or ancient history. Men push the idea that women should feel awful about turning 40 because they know that women step in to some serious power in their lives in that decade, and if we feel powerful they can’t control us. But 40 is so freeing!

Thé ban isn’t about gaming addiction. It’s about limiting contact to non-Chinese media, because in-game chats are how some dissident groups are sharing information and making plans. The Chinese government doesn’t care about anyone’s health, and mental health isn’t even a topic you can discuss in China. Marriage isn’t something one partner surprises the other with. You either decide together that you are as a team working together to build a future, or you are just wasting your time. The only men threatened by a woman working on herself, for herself, are men who can’t or won’t do the same for themselves and their own lives. HVM want a woman who believes in her own worth, because HVM believe in their own.

Often men who are traditionally successful in their profession got there via trade offs that made them internalize a lot of misogyny. So once they have a little money they don’t seek HVW, they seek women with low self esteem and treat them like crap, making them ‘pay’ for every girl they couldn’t have as a teenager or young adult. Their girlfriends/wives are scapegoats, and then there is this weird game they start playing, called ‘how far can I go treating her like crap?’ Their girlfriend thinks…

This is just pathetic to type out: I took anything because it was what was being offered, and something was better than nothing. I knew the men I was dating weren’t making the effort for me. I knew and still accepted it. It took me a long time to realize that raising my standards wouldn’t leave me alone forever. That HVM deliberately seek women who know how to set those boundaries and expect better.

Getting my house in order. Clearing out every closet and junk drawer, being ruthless about getting rid of stuff, taking stock of my surroundings and fixing it up a bit. It’s so hard to be tidy when there isn’t enough space for everything. I am leveling up my living space.

Oh, ew. He’s 45 - how does he have a life he can dump just to do whatever she wants to do? Clearly no career, no home, no bills, no adult responsibilities, friends, etc. No 45 year old should be that rootless in the world.

“I don’t want to shame him….” Why not? Shame is a very valid emotion. Why do women constantly feel the need to take on the burden of protecting men from their own shame? “I’m worried he might MURDER ME, but I don’t want him to feel SHAME about wanting to murder me.”

The apps let you read your texts but to the sender, what they sent looks unread. Endlessly amusing if you are dating from dating apps, have a narcissist in your life, or otherwise really want to read something someone sent you but don’t want to let them know you saw it.

If you really want a laugh, don’t block their number. Download an app that lets you read your text messages while still showing them on read to the sender, and watch him get a little frantic when his PUA tricks don’t work and you don’t chase him. Hours of hilarity. You never respond, obviously. Just enjoy the string of texts you get when he realizes he effed up.

Nothing. But you wouldn’t walk into preschool pickup and lead with your career and talent, either. It’s context - if all you have to say is “I’m married with two kids,” the signal is clear that you aren’t a person in your own right; you need qualifiers that attach you to other people. Imagine meeting someone who could help your career - which makes the better impression on them: 1. I’m married, and have two toddlers at home. 2. I started at XYZ corporation after I got my MBA from ABC school. Als…

In your shoes, I’d lay it out with your mom to start marketing you like the total catch you are. Let her know that she did such a great job raising you that she deserves the very best son in law there is. Appeal to her vanity and pride. Other families might have to settle for a weak shlub, but yours doesn’t. Get her to seek HVM for you by appealing to her own vanity. Market yourself as valuable and rare.

This is so hard to read because I’ve been that woman, not making my needs and expectations clear upfront, just going along with a man wasting my time while obsessively picking apart the red flags, trying to turn them green, wondering how other women were getting engaged to men excited to marry them.

You are his beard - the lovely normal girl he uses to shield his predator predilections from the world with. Run. He’s following these girls for a reason. Don’t do the mental gymnastics of looking for a tolerable reason why. That’s a waste of your time and energy.

There is no secret cabal reserving houses for a specific market segment. There is no stigma against women buying houses. That’s victim mentality. You hired a shit, LVRealtor. Figure out why you did that and hire better. A better realtor can get you into the kind of house you deserve. If your market requires a letter to close a deal, write one. Mine did. I hated that. But I didn’t complain about it, or blame anyone. I took ownership of what I needed to do to be competitive and successful, and wro…

I would say to my younger self: don’t make any decisions grounded in ‘We’ or ‘best for our relationship’ if you are not married. You plan your future according to what you want and you need. None of this ‘going to a second tier law school to be close to your boyfriend,’ etc. No ‘this career path doesn’t leave me enough free time to spend with my boyfriend,’ or, ‘it will be easier to have kids when we get married if I pick a different career.’ There are no ‘we’ decisions until you are married. Sh…

It sounds like he wants her to train him to do her job, not the one he was hired for. All red flags in that.

Is your manager asking you to train him to do things, or is he asking? If it’s him, just say no. No reason why, either. Just no. If he’s messaging you, stop responding. And document it all.

This. Also, if you try to offer a shred of nuance or suggest an alternate interpretation, a brigand of men will downvote you, and then follow your comment history and downvote the last 100 comments you’ve made in any subreddit.

Guys in their 40s and 50s are the generation that built all this. It’s total garbage if they tell you they are ‘too old’ for social media. They are the biggest demographic on FB use. In the ‘olden days’ they were the biggest demographic on precursor social media, like Blogger, Yahoo Groups, and Flickr. It’s the generation above them that might be clueless - early 60s and up. If they pretend they are too old, they are married and live with their wife, and she had no idea about his extracurricular…

I am old, and when I look back at where my friends and I went wrong, it was one thing, and nothing to do with men. Only surround yourself with HVW. Pickmeishas aren’t just a dating trope, they are a friendship trope, and they will drag you down to their level by any means necessary, and ruin your life in ways a man can’t. They are the crappy bridesmaid who ruins your wedding photos; the girl in your friend group who gets sloppy drunk on vacation to force you to babysit her. They are attention le…

I suspect I am way older than the average demographic in this subreddit (I wish this existed when I was in college!). In my divorced and dating demographic, a man who claims to have no social media is always married. Always. And not separated, not stuck in a long divorce process, but still living with their unsuspecting wife. They are hiding their family and also providing an excuse for why you can’t tag them in a casual photo on Instagram. A man over 40 without a FB account or IG is a liar. Luc…

If a man asked me out for a drink, then, when the bill came, asked me for 'my half', I would be so angry. At myself, for not recognizing him in advance as a fedora-wearing neckbeard and declining the date. At myself, for wasting my own time like this. I usually offer. I've never had anyone accept it. If he can't afford to spring for $10 for my glass of wine, he probably can't afford to date. Plus, I am generally delightful company on a date. He'll walk away feeling like a king, even if we discov…
