This is a visualization of the "two sides of the same coin" argument, seems like. There has been much discussion about this stuff in the past but what it seems to boil down to is: 1) Some cool egalitarians call themselves feminists 2) Some uncool sexists call themselves feminists 3) MRM realizes that most of their problems come from the uncool feminists 4) It's pretty dang impossible to distinguish the two when it counts for many reasons, like: 1st vs 3rd wave; "real" feminism (which can mean an…

Relatively successful, considering it's been around for so long. If it didn't have something going it'd be long gone I think. Group inequality in the sense of exploiting what the genders are biologically inclined to do. Using what people already want to do to push forward the betterment of humans involved in culture is pretty much the point.

The classic gender roles are far from perfect, but they work pretty well. I guess the search for a system balancing the needs of the individual and the group is a pretty complicated one to come up with.

Yeah, you understand me perfectly. Here's the issue I have with it actually happening: it's really hard. Finding the perfect adaptions of what people want vs. what helps culture is a struggle, and one wrong move throws the whole system out of balance. The book Sex and Culture seems to suggest (based on reviews, haven't read it yet) that giving women these equal opportunities dooms the culture to failure. Hence we have our paradox. I'm going to read the book, because I find it tragic that there i…

I'm under the impression that it's possible. Offer equal opportunity, but witness unequal results as genders are different. Equal opportunity so far, but different results. How do we translate these different results into things that benefit culture? We introduce things to exploit those unequal results, but the exploitations are gender-neutral themselves. What you have is gender neutral opportunities with a gender-neutral cap, but because the genders behave differently then you get unequal resul…

This is the exact same quote, but this is not the correct article. But, now that we have the quote it will be easier to find. EDIT: Found it! http://ncfm.org/2011/10/news/conscription/media-focus-on-rapes-and-other-female-miseries-while-ignoring-male-executions-worked-to-death-laborers-tortured-prisoners-and-nine-year-old-boy-soldiers-trained-to-kill-and-be-killed/

I agree! Lots of feminists are in there, but I read a thread about "what do you all think is sexist", and not only were the women's examples very fair, but they also brought up equivilant men's examples. It was very refreshing!

I love Brother Ali! Don't remember this song on that album, though.

Mr “I refuse to believe this happens”. He would never cat call or rape and isn’t sexist at all and thinks gender roles are outmoded. Therefore, he thinks, everyone else thinks just like me too. Can’t line up women’s experiences of sexism with his own worldview, so dismisses everything they say, demanding “proof”. Sees no irony in this. Mr “actually you’ve got this the wrong way round”. Silly you! This is looks, feels, smells and tastes like misogyny but is actually misandry. Don’t worry, easy mi…

Can anyone help me understand this post further? If we assume patriarchy (a big if), what is wrong with the deconstruction of gender? I have a feeling it's related to biology which brings us to the objective, but I can't quite wrap my head around it.

I disagree in that I like this subreddit, but that's personal preference. There's a lot of rude folks in the world, and some people have an easy time finding them here.

Jezebel is citing the U.S. Justice Department, and I think that's where this stat originates from. Send me a link so I can read? I agree. When you take into account biased surveys, under-reporting, innocent until proven guilty, narrow rape definitions, and cultural male-as-victim denial, this statistic loses much of its meaning.

I could have SWORN that I saw it, front page of rainn.org. Jezebel likes to cite it, as well as some other silly blogs, but to my knowledge they don't cite anything.

I agree! I agree so much! But the conversations I have with people are along the lines of: Them: Look at the stats. Me: So you're implying that men should be treated differently based on this measurment of an already minute phonomenon? Them: I'm not implying anything, just look at the stats! Me: So you're saying "DATA!" while not making any conclusions? If you leave your conclusion up for implication as opposed to stating it, that doesn't make it true! How do you get people to externalize their …

I can agree, but I'm not sure I've made it clear what angle I am taking this from. EXPLANATION When it comes to casual encounters, the man has about as much biological responsibility as a sperm donar and as much emotional responsibility as, well, a man seeking casual encounters. Since the bullet of the baby-gun is aimed at the woman, the kevlar is hers to put up. One could say that it's the responisibility of the man with the gun, but he sure-as-hell doesn't want, and isn't intending, that shot …

In response to you last paragraph, I think it has more to do with serious relationships. I'd argue that in significant relationships, sex is meaningful of love as opposed to fun, and should there be some accedental preganancy in the picture both parents are more likely to keep the kid. So, since sex and pregnancy affects both of them, they share the contraceptive responsibility. I agree with your view on more casual encounters, however.

A very good comparison. My friend told me today that he doesn't think he'd be a MRA because he calls out sexism wherever, regardless of gender. I told him that that's the cool thing about MRAdvocacy: it doesn't have a position on women. It has QUITE a few things to say about feminists, but you can be an MRA while still recognizing female-focused sexism (though it doesn't happen in the west as often as some would like us to believe). I think that the only opinion MRAdvocacy has on women is that, …

I agree, and was about to ask what the difference between MRA and feminism is, before realizing we have a sidebar topic for just that.

Okay but I'm really not talking about feminism at all!

Would you say that, by being MRAs, we aren't aiming directly for equality? If we wanted to go straight for equality, we'd be HUMAN'S Rights Advocates. I'm not saying that it's BAD to have men's rights as a primary goal and equality as secondary, mind you, it's that I agree with your idea that we've gotta clear this up first before we move on to egalitarianism. EDIT: Another question. Would you say that "men's rights" implies that men should have different rights from women? I think that it impli…

Well sure, (keeping in mind I'm not talking about feminism) but what stops egalitarianism from looking at the punching hand?

So you're saying that since sexism will always be there, we might as well support our side as opposed to stopping the fighting? Please explain your analogy.
/r/MensRights27/11/11 05:59 AM
You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
