Nah, we are both more pragmatic than romantic, and I don't think it has to be a competition of what matters more, me or his work-- he isn't a true workaholic and I like that he loves his profession. It's just been hard for me to adjust at this stage (about 4 months in) because this is also around the time when it's normal for couples to start solidifying their intentions together, and he's been so swamped that we're temporarily not able to connect in all the usual everyday ways that keep that pr…

the beginning is a delicate time that needs a lot more passion to really cement your bond. Yes!! This is kind of my point, regardless of my level of neediness (which isn't much, tbh it's much more about having a low tolerance for inconsistency & ambiguity, rather than needing someone to be hyper-attentive-- still things I'm working on, but I think it's an important distinction to make. On top of the attachment issues, I'm also mildly neuroatypical which likely accounts for some of my difficulty)…

"What's wrong with what we're doing now?" Ugh 😂 It sounds like he didn't fully internalize the notion that a good woman can always do better, and if he really wanted to keep you around he needed to make the effort to meet your needs. Honestly that's what I am most afraid of at this point, the slippery slope of being taken for granted and becoming a piece of décor in someone's life. Normally that thought never even crosses my mind with this dude, but as his project has dragged on for a couple mon…

Thank you, this is well-grounded advice/perspective and sounds exactly like the dynamic I'm hoping this solidifies into as we/I get further along. And yeah, all of my personal growth work is done for my benefit first and foremost, anyone else benefitting is just a nice side effect 😎 I am kiiiinda working on my attachment stuff--not because I'm slacking, but because some of it is impossible to heal completely on one's own and really requires ongoing experiences with healthy attachments (in therap…

You're right, I don't think mine is a proper workaholic; I think that's subconsciously why I put it in quotes in the post title. I'll add an edit to clarify that due to the nature of his job his free time is kind of a feast/famine situation, in general. He does make time for me and his other loved ones even when it's in famine mode, just less because it is a finite resource, and is much more involved when he's not utterly buried in work. I do think things could be a smidge better, but based on p…

hey queeeen! I am behind on replying to most comments (and will get to them this evening!) but yours is short and makes a nuanced point I hadn't thought to articulate, which I can actually answer briefly, so I shall... he's definitely not using work as any kind of barrier. He genuinely loves it, and to me HV includes being happy in a career that you chose. The lifestyle of having to share him with work doesn't bother me, any more than it bothers partners of, say, offshore workers who work 3 week…

Ha! It IS like training a dog, as much as I hate to think of him that way we are all hardwired to respond to rewards. But you're right, I think I need to focus on both the request and how secure, etc., it makes me feel when he does do it (and he does, not every day and not from the same template each time-- which makes it feel organic and real-- but i do wish it was a reliable part of his routine). He has responded to that kind of logic pretty well about other things, once I get really clear and…

Thank you! I feel this way too, and even though my life is not as professionally demanding, I am aware of these alternatives and make use of them to maintain my important relationships if I'm not going to be available. I have brought up similar things before and he's worked on them immediately, he doesn't get defensive or petty AT ALL, just addresses it. But on this one, I have to admit that setting guidelines for when I need to hear from him feels like it's taking the spontaneity and sincerity …

Yuuup. I wasn't even going to get into the "facts" he's trying to use. A 10yo cat is considered a senior, and pets have absolutely been harmed by being tossed into the hold with baggage. There was a whole thing about United a few years ago where someone's pet was returned to them in critical condition and badly bloodied from exactly that. This guy is NV and should be thrown in the trash for being willing to risk such a thing. I'm glad his (ex)gf seems to agree.

Delighted to see this here and I'm delighted for you, it sounds like you have a great marriage! I have been thinking about only dating men in "caring professions" for this exact reason, with the same exception to doctors and surgeons because you're right, they're usually egotistical dicks. (I have some health issues so I've met a few and am rarely impressed.) My favorite ex of all time was a teacher, not exactly the same career potential but the same kind of selfless purpose, if that makes sense…

Holy shit. I learned a new thing today. I hereby absolve myself of the shit I did when I was cornered (emotionally or physically) by a couple of my exes. Sure, it's mostly just common sense stuff so it may not be news but here's my primer. They may not all apply to everyone but I hope you find some of these useful: get a burner app and don't give your real number out to anyone you don't completely trust keep multiple email accounts, go in the settings for webmail & mail client and make your name a pseudonym on anything you don't need to have your real name on use a VPN and incognito browsing if you're worried about your web activity being tracked…

Do take care though, I saw from your previous comment that you have already mentioned it to him once. It worked out for me because I wasn't trying to persuade him to do anything, I genuinely was just expressing a preference through naturally flowing conversation. He was astute enough to take a hint from that and "compromise" without being directly asked. I wouldn't recommend bringing it up to him at all, unless he wants to kiss you or snuggle or something else where you have a reason to respond …

Went to a club with friends years ago. I had some dude "harmlessly" following me around the dancefloor while I was trying to dance by myself. This went on for maybe half an hour. Appropriately enough one of the songs that came on was U2's "I Will Follow". Any time I'd turn and face the other way, he'd work his way back in front of me like if he kept trying I'd have to give in and acknowledge his existence. Eventually he got too close and I shoved him, never said a word and kept dancing. He got t…

No I definitely get it! And I was just teasing you, I WISH that was a thing. I'm pretty introverted so I have similar issues trying to meet new people, even "just" friends. Btw, spending time with your sociable, HV friends is a great way to meet more people like them, and probably at some point you'll get introduced to a man you like. There are risks and benefits to dating within your social group, but it can be worth it if you are staying safe and sticking firmly to FDS principles. The best ent…

I had a similar situation years ago. I really liked the guy, we'd talked for weeks on OLD before meeting up, and he really liked me. Went on first date, had a great time, but I think maybe I didn't want to kiss him or something because of his beard? Whatever it was, I mentioned that he didn't have it in his OL pics and I really liked him but I just had a thing about big beards. I literally just had an idea about this while reading your post. Someone else posted a similar question a few days ago and I guess my brain was working the problem in the background, so I haven't looked into specifics yet & it will vary depending on where you are. If it's FaceTime then it's likely a real number, not a burner. You might be able to find out who it belongs to through a reverse lookup (pop the number in Google, Facebook, etc to search). From there you can decide if you want to report it to the police, not that they will do much but it's never a bad idea to have a paper trail.

Great question 😊 Speaking for myself, I have had multiple surgeries, but never with the goal of being more "attractive". I put this in quotes because I'm picky about words and attractive to me means with the purpose of attracting. I got my surgeries to correct some specific things I was never happy with, for myself. To make my body on the outside look like the person I felt I was inside. And for that reason, I'm happy with the results and I don't see a reason to get any other (major) procedures …

If you've already explained all this then it's just not getting through to her, and that's not your fault, but I don't think any logical explanation would satisfy her. Ask her why she wants a grandbaby so badly. Maybe she can adopt a kid. She doesn't want to raise the whole kid herself? Suggest for her to babysit in the neighborhood, or volunteer with children's advocacy organizations or become a foster parent. It's not your job to disrupt your life to give her a grandkid, but maybe you can offe…

Don't wait around for him to come back. Don't reserve a piece of your heart for this man who has all but told you he sees your relationship as an option with his "idk what will happen" nonsense. Absolutely, that's why I don't even think about dating right now. I'm still learning how to be friends with myself, not through someone else's lens of what that looks like but for my own sake. I'm naturally friendly, smart, kind, and the small number of people I'm close to do value me, and somehow I beat the odds of my upbringing (not dramatically, but enough to be proud of), but most of the "substance" to my personality feels like it was founded in coping mechanisms for neglect/abuse. Definitely get a burner. I had one for years. None of your identifying information is tied to it so if you do ghost & block, he can't use it to haunt you. Depending on which burner app you use, you can usually get multiple numbers for not much more $ so you don't necessarily have to change numbers every time you ghost one person. The downside is it's a lot to keep track of, lol.

You could try pausing before you hit "post", and taking a minute to think about why you're posting the thing at all. Are you sharing it because someone specific needs to see it? Maybe just send them a DM or text instead. Is it an accomplishment you want to share because you're proud? Think of the people in your life who would be genuinely proud of you too, and consciously look forward to how they make you feel, vs someone who would just comment "good job babe x" and never mention it again when y…

I can't speak for anyone else, but I'm in the longest stretch of being single that I've ever had in my life prior to high school. Why I don't want to date is because cognitively, I know I have a ton of shit to work through and getting involved with anyone before it's done wouldn't be fair to a HVM or healthy for me. I'm pretty new to the nuances of FDS so I would welcome corrections, but it sounds like your second mistake was coming to depend on him for that.
