Most of the time it's just meeting someone in a public place (library, quad area, other typical college locations) and having a conversation with them (usually 30mins-1hr) and then exchanging numbers. Never once has a conversation been bad or awkward. Not that I'm a professional on the subject but I never really thought I fucked up anywhere. Then I'll usually wait a day or two, and then call.
