Yes THIS is accurate. There’s a chance that a private paid service may have your info. The guy would have to really want to know who you are (which could happen). But in my case above I believe that this guy saw my name on my computer as it was easily visible. Hence the comment on the privacy screen as a helpful item.

You feel like I misconstrued what you said and I feel like you misconstrued what I said. I didn’t leave work to go drinking with him lol. However, at no point was I upset or did I attack you. It’s weird that you went there. ✌🏼

I have indeed read the handbook, made posts in the past, and am not upset at all. I’m merely stating that the black and white of “don’t ever drink with coworkers” isn’t realistic advice and I don’t think what is really the issue.

I do agree on getting back to my work though. But still - a privacy screen is a good idea 👍🏻

I definitely did not give that to him. I was confident in my reply and only later on upon further reflection did I decide to write this post. Great point

He didn’t drink at all and left early, presumably he was trying to keep up his “sober” act and cut out early to avoid temptation

Actually you cannot find out someone’s name from Googling a mobile number. At least not in the US, so that’s not really accurate.

Drinking with men, including coworkers, is really part of my job. So unfortunately that advice doesn’t really work for me.

That is not an option for my job as I travel frequently (weekly) and working on the plane is sometimes the only time that I have to get work done.

The pandemic allowed me to blank slate and get rid of a LOT of toxic relationships with both men and women. I am just now starting to socialize again and while I do feel disappointed in myself for even having this happened to me, I also am proud for analyzing it as much as I have done, really deciding what I did to allow this behavior and how I could have controlled it better. Like you I have had to deal with toxic, NVM in my life and I’ll be damned if I’m going to let it happen again. No thanks…

Also… glad you’re starting to feel better. Your coworker “friend” sounds awful

I love the term drama-monger. I will definitely be keeping my distance from this guy, grey rocking him, keeping topics of conversation to work, being boring and busy, etc. There is a big mask going on and it’ll fall apart at some point and I don’t want to be associated with him. Really happy this happened so early on, wish I’d not had the experience happen at all but I am learning.

Yes totally. I actually don’t feel broken at all and so yeah it was a super weird thing to say on his part. Total projection. He knows nothing about me really. Secondly - he is on his second marriage. He said his first wife was a “rich spoiled bitch” and that she divorced him and then he moved abroad and led a life of debauchery for a summer before going back to work. He tells me all that after we finish our drinks and on our way back. Soooo yeah I’d say he does seem kinda broken and his poor wi…

Grey rocking is a great strategy and I will do that going forward. And yeah love how he doesn’t drink, or do drugs. I’m skeptical on even the drugs now.

Yes definitely agree with that. And I’d say I can probably avoid one on one outside the office with him. I am going to do the same with the other men on my team too as much as possible. It’s so exhausting to have guard up all times. Just the other day I went for dinner and drinks with my boss and nothing weird or inappropriate happened. It was a mandatory one on one review lunch. So I get into these one on one situations with my coworkers, married men, some in authority and some my peers, all th…

Thanks for that advice! Unfortunately drinking is a huge part of my job entertaining as I work in sales so it didn’t really seem that odd at first. I’m not sure what line of business you do but hopefully that can understand why it didn’t seem that off to me in the beginning.

Yes I got that much. I was really focused more on how to behave with him regarding work related matters since I have to interact with him quite a bit. I don’t really think that I did anything wrong here and looking for polite ways to avoid these situations with him in the future as I am guessing he is grooming me for future interactions. (Could be doing it with other women in the office too for all I know). I did think the entire thing was very odd (which is why I made the post in the first plac…

Hi, yes I agree with that. It was definitely something that I should not have done and gone back to the office after leaving Starbucks! It’d be one thing if we were working, or still talking about work, or career, or the company. But when we got to the second place and he’d had another drink he turned the topic to personal and I didn’t really see that coming.

Yes he did. Although previously he’d said he didn’t drink OR do drugs, so I find it odd that now he does drink “sometimes” and I would consider 4 drinks in 2 hours quite a lot. I have dealt with alcoholism in my family and I know that recovering addicts who are sober never touch a drink, typically for several years, before they can handle socially drinking and then it’ll be having a drink here or there. So yeah you’re right he had some drug problems presumably.

Hey thanks for the input and reassurance that I didn’t mess up. I DID feel waylaid because it wasn’t really enough time to do anything productive (~1.5 hr) before we started our mingle with our larger team but I felt really pressured into accompanying him to this other bar with his “C’mon! We haven’t been in the city in forever!” Type of attitude. You’re right that there’s something off about him. Some highlights: Joe Kennedy summoned his daughter-in-law to the Le Pevillon restaurant in the Ritz Tower Hotel in Manhattan and offered her a $1 million check to stay in the marriage The meeting came after Jackie paid a surprise visit to the Senate Office Building in Washington and caught Kennedy at his desk receiving oral sex from an office temp named Peggy Ashe One night when JFK returned home from a hotel romp with a mistress, he and Jackie got into an ugly fight that spilled into the street…

You can do it and just by being so aware of your patterns and the reasons why is so empowering. You are also realizing it at a young age. You are setting yourself up for a lifetime of happiness with this mindset. Therapy is only as good as the therapist and the type of therapy and luckily it sounds like it’s working for you!

Good for you!!! Reading your post just made me tired. I totally remember those days. Except I was too weak and I’d let my boundary get violated until it wasn’t a boundary at all anymore. One year turned into two and then three and then four. I wasted a lot of my best dating years (25-35) being a complete pickme instead of cutting things off and you knowwww it would only get worse.

What do you do in these situations? I haven’t started dating again but when I do, probably next summer, I seriously have no patience for this. I would like to just say Excuse Me and get up and walk out the door.

A lot of us have been there! I am 37 and a recovering pick me (not sure why my flair has been marked as a throwaway account!) and I was already on this journey of boundary work, dating myself, evaluating alllll of my current relationships and FDS has been the icing on the cake because it gives me the validation that my instincts are correct and many times it is reinforced for us to act like pick me by society which is totally geared around sexism and men

I have always over extended relationships and was the breakup-ee (not the breakup-er). I would put myself through so many tears, sleepless nights, Internet stalking, phone calls and texts, long conversations trying to fix things and work things out. It was disgusting. Bad habits are really hard to break (good habits too, once you develop them!). Really I can gain some solace and peace from taking the initiative to start therapy 2 years ago, do a lot of work on myself, and find this community. Be…

Stoicism is great for this. It is worth looking into. It’s the idea of us something in my control or not - we always have a choice and we have to take responsibility for that even if our choice may be to stay in a relationship when we give a million reasons for doing so if we are not being treated the way that you deserve.

I enjoy it when the man makes plans and if he knows my taste and can infer that I will like something new (for example, he knows I like a certain kind of music so he thinks I will enjoy this concert for an artist I have not heard of) as that shows thoughtfulness. However…. You are absolutely spot on with the distinction here of a man already going to something and bringing you along without any type of thought into if you will enjoy it or not. And, he should absolutely take the initiative to als…

Yes!! The last guy I was dating would get noticeably bummed out when after we’d gone to dinner and out partying the night before, I wanted to take some time for myself, go back to my place and work out and even when I was saying I’d meet him up later! I can’t understand why he couldn’t give me a few hours of freaking personal time to do things that were important to me without pouting. I am like you very into fitness and eating healthy. It’s actually been a huge dilemma for me in dating. I don’t consume much alcohol due to the empty calories, I enjoy going to sleep early to wake up and work out and do my morning routine, and if I go out the night before I like to work out the next day at some point. With men I have dated recently they all abhore working out on vacation, do not try to eat healthy at all, seem to feel jilted that yes I’d rather get out of bed at 7 AM and go to t…

This is a good reminder. For those of us who grow up with dysfunction in our families, we are often placed in a position of care taking or peace keeping as a child and abandon our own needs (this can of course happen to a boy or girl as a child). When we grow up, While men tend to repeat these patterns, we as woman tend to seek out men who we end up taking care of and trying to fix. It is really important to learn to recognize these patterns of attraction and realize how harmful it is for everyo…

Interesting thought. I would say, yes, it is a red flag. Cats are lovable, emotional, kind, and they do bond with people. In my experience, the most LVM that I dated (there have been more than one in my pickme days prior to Covid and discovering FDS) did not like cats and would make fun of anyone who did. Cats are seem as introverted, unfriendly and lame. He ended up being the biggest LVM and narcissist. Alternatively, I was in a lovely long term relationship with a HVM (which I fucked up… again…

I agree with this taking a break. I have been taking a “break” during quarantine but I want to spend more time still on myself, and one area of getting ready to date now that I have found this amazing FDS community is really pour over all of the posts and the content and digest it. I don’t want to be out in the wild yet feeling unsure if I am acting like my old pickme self and trying to remember a strategy in the moment. Plus, dating takes an immense amount of time

Great post and you’re right, women have had to fight for each scrap of rights like voting, having our own bank accounts, owning property, working, getting a college education, the right to control our bodies, our lives, to not be sold off in a dowry as a child bride, to a basic education, to the board room, to owning our sexuality, to divorce, to not be drugged up and sent away to mental asylums when our husbands tired of us, to our safety and liberty, I could go on
