I haven't read bell hooks in decades, but as I recall, in the mid-1990s she uncritically supported or cited some batshit crazy Afrocentric Pseudoscience (like Ivan Van Sertima). Gross and Levitt might have pointed this out in their book Higher Superstition: The Academic Left and Its Quarrels with Science.

I stopped buying Gillette (and P & G products more generally) as soon as that ad came out. I use some cheaper disposable razors and Nivea shave cream instead. I don't plan to ever return to Gillette.

This is very true. Back in 2017 (I think), the Ryerson University (now Toronto Metropolitan University) LGBT student group on campus actually formally adopted a policy that white gay men were no longer oppressed. So while gay white men could join the group, they could not represent the group in any official capacity. This political inequality was not enforced on ANY other identity group, just gay white men.

As far as political representation goes, I would note that from back in the early 1970s, lesbians asked for equal leadership positions (like co-chairs, one women, one man) inside mixed organizations that were nevertheless numerically male dominated. Not only did gay organizations have more men, there were simply VASTLY more men identifying as gay than women identifying as lesbian. Surveys showed this time and time again. I agree with you completely. I think gay men are oblivious to the risks that straight men face in heterosexual relationships. As a gay man, I think straight men have it a lot worse these days! It's not that gay men fail to recognize discrimination against themselves from feminist or LGBT communities, it's that they are unaware of the discrimination faced by men more generally, so they are unable to connect their own mistreatment to that of others.
