In general, there's a mixture of nature and nurture. The caveat in nurture regarding been nice, is that if people think that some one is morally inferior, then they go out of their way to punish that person. That punishment can be arbitrarily callous, inhumain, with out limitation of cruelty. The important part here is "they THINK that the person is morally inferior", not the real reality. That doesn't contradict what i'm saying. A related experiment. People train fight dogs by repeatedly beating them when young. If you try to give them a mate as adults, they will kill them. It's something less extreme in our case. You just disagree if it's nature of nurture.

Why this doesn't happen with domesticated animals? Why does it need big numbers? Just take the example of mice/rats in cages. They don't disintegrate like that, just because they are in cages.
