Sorry for late reply: Yes its safe as long as you wear the PPE 100% of the time. Doesn't matter if you're just making a little tiny cut. Almost take the minute to properly gear up. I agree especially with your last point, when I left highschool I wasn't interested in University and both my teachers and classmates told me I'd have a bad life if I didn't get a degree. Now that we're in our mid twenties most of them have useless degrees and most of the ones that got good jobs don't really enjoy they're field. I'm not much better as I'd say I don't enjoy it/don't hate it. But I only work half the year so that's really nice.

I became a truck driver. Worked locally for a couple years before getting into the oilfield, working 22 days, 16 hours a day outside is pretty shitty but the pay and two weeks off is pretty great. Company paid flights to and from work along with hotels. Sadly Canada's oilfield is struggling right now so I'm back to working locally hauling steel. I'll hit $100k cad this year working 70 hour weeks, not a bad life for a 24 year old.
