Every single drug has risks, odds of increased suicidallity from something like mirtazapine are very low, which is why its supposed to be combined with monitoring anyway. The drugs are there to alleviate symptoms and in some cases address chemical imbalances, thats why drugs are combined with therapy.

APA is doubling down "Many men believe they must be stoic & take care of things solo, which are great tools. But, when those are the only ones they have & when they self-blame for being unable to make them work in all situations, the result often is to lash out, or in, violence" Other psychologists not happy. https://malepsychology.org.uk/2019/01/10/is-there-an-alternative-to-the-new-apa-guidelines-for-working-with-men-and-boys/

Its more dependant on the type just like some causes of high blood pressure is easier to treat than others. Usually CBT or mindfulness based therapy, it would help with the substance abuse and poor diet too. Its either do something or have guys keep killing themselves, i don't think the solution is "traditional masculinity" as they have defined it being bad and i agree with you that we need to get more men seeking help.

I agree with the idea that bottling up emotion is contributing to suicidality in men, i don't agree their hypothesis that its because, something something sexism.

I can counter your completely anecdotal evidence with my own. "real medical treatment for mental problems" CBT MBCT ACT DBT Those are all empirically proven methods to treat depression, i didnt even include medication. edit so i will The Anti depressants escitalopram, agomelatine, mirtazapine and aroxetine all have a high incidence of success with treating depressive disorders. https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(17)32802-7/fulltext

Except i am right, i never said i agreed with its conclusions, the document you linked summed it up nicely actually.

Those are not two separate issues and both of those can be solved by getting medical treatment, which men do not do for fear of being seen as weak, i have seen it time and time again.

The example you gave is wrong though? "There was no male suicide epidemic in the 1950's when "traditional masculinity" was celebrated rather than attacked. So clearly something else is going on here." It's very clearly not linked to a decline in masculinity, its silence, its having to hide your emotions because you are afraid others men and women wont see you as a man. From my own experiences i've seen enough people bottle it up and break which result in a suicide and always results in comments …

Yes there was https://www.statista.com/statistics/187478/death-rate-from-suicide-in-the-us-by-gender-since-1950/ https://academic.oup.com/ije/article/39/6/1464/736597 "Now they are now only a useless burden but a whiny useless burden." Talking about a mental health problem does not make you a burden, this is part of the fucking problem.

The problem with these guidelines is that its full of decent stuff that comes to strange conclusions like above.

like this banger? sarcasm This is conclusion i was referring to. "Sexism exists as a byproduct, reinforcer, and justification of male privilege. Although the majority of young men may not identify with explicit sexist beliefs (McDermott & Schwartz, 2013), for some men, sexism may become deeply engrained in their construction of masculinity (O’Neil, 2015). For instance, most boys are taught from an early age that they will suffer negative consequences for violating masculine role norms (Reigelu…

Just an example from the notes, men's suicide rates are through the roof, one of those reasons is men's reluctance to seek assistance, see "man up".

As far as i can see it isn't, its giving specific guidelines for male psychological treatment.
