In tech, I think a lot of it is about not being a man child, that alone puts you above a lot of people, then once you're at a certain level you're competing using status, height/physical (super buff 5'8 > super lanky 6'), and work ethic. Personally I'm not too worried about moving up someone else's ladder, I have a lot I do on the side, and I make more money in that than my job, the job is more for peace of mind and extra income.
