I’ve never been “visible,” or perhaps that’s my own perception. I’ve stayed in my own weird, quirky lane from puberty because, like you said, I didn’t want to deal with what pretty girls dealt with.

I am staunchly childfree, but if I ever meet a guy who thinks he can change my mind he better be ready for a laundry list of requirements (written and signed off on) before I even think about it.

For us it was more logical, less emotional. We were both open and honest with each other on why we felt things weren’t going to work out. We weren’t trying to hurt each other in the process, we just realized we weren’t as compatible as we thought. I think a lot of the bitterness that comes out of divorce comes from each party feeling victimized and that making things difficult is their way of getting back at their ex for all the ways they felt they were wronged. I can’t speak about all divorces …
/r/askFDS07/12/21 04:44 PM

I didn’t. Seeing as I got a divorce I’m glad I didn’t. Doubt I will if I ever get married again.

As someone who walked down that path and filed for divorce in the aftermath, just don’t do it. I know this will get me flayed around here, but he’s now a much better friend than he was a husband. If there’s no physical attraction you’re dooming yourself. It won’t just magically appear, especially once you start seeing him, warts and all.

Honestly, I loooove video games. But I also take care of my shit. I have basic hygiene, I’ve been holding down the same job for years. My bills get paid and my house is clean. Enjoy your free time, but don’t let it mess with what really matters.

Do it. Came home from work one afternoon and asked ex if he had walked the dog because he clearly had not since our landlord had left a notice about something or other wedged in our door and it wasn’t there when I had left. He insisted he had. He was playing video games instead. That sealed the deal for me.

I wanted to try couple’s counseling when my ex and I were ramping up to the divorce. He insisted that he had mentioned it to me a few months prior, but I’m 99% sure he was just gaslighting me about it. To me that was just further proof that I just needed to cut my losses.

I was out of town for a wedding this past weekend and had dinner on the last night away with my sister and her husband. For context, I split with my ex-husband this year. We were joking about how we’re running out of excuses for family gatherings since this was our cousin who got married. I told them I probably won’t get married again and that stopped them dead in their tracks. Like, if it’s going to happen, it’ll happen. But I’d rather be single and happy than unhappily married again.

I see your point, but in your analogy I’m just taking care of planning said trip to the water park. I’m paying my half, he’s paying his. Our divorce is basically just going to be us going to a judge and confirming we agree to how we’ve already split everything up. The emotional labor of splitting up is already over, we just need to make it legal.

STBXH and I decided to divorce back in Feb. Guess who still hasn’t initiated the paperwork and is leaving it all to me to handle? So glad we’re splitting. Trust your gut, but I’ll add the caveat that I worked the graveyard shift for the past year and you really do sleep most of the day. If his sleep patterns are anything like mine as an example, I’d get off work around 7-8, fall asleep around 9 am, sleep till about 2, have a few hours awake then nap a couple hours before I had to be back at work. You’re literally asleep when everyone is awake and awake when everyone is asleep. It puts a hamper on all your social relationships. I wouldn’t wish that…

I’m interested in these comments because that’s the kind of relationship I’ve got with not only my ex husband but one of my best friends. I’ve never really thought it’s weird. And I’ve already gone down that path with the ex husband and I know nothing but unhappiness is down that way. BFF is married and I’ve never felt that way about him. So they’re both harmless to any new potential man in my life.

I’ve honestly been contemplating something similar. I can’t do hormonal birth control and I am firmly in the childfree camp. I don’t want there to be a “happy accident” with a guy who’s not as firm in that decision and I don’t know how to tell guys when I get back into dating.

An ex of mine contacted me again after years the day my STBXH moved out of our home to start our separate lives. The universe has uncanny timing sometimes, but it really freaked me out since the only public place I posted about us divorcing was IG, so unless he’s stalking my profile there’s no way he could have known since we don’t have any mutuals (we dated before the social media era).

While I can’t comment on this from a BIPOC perspective, I can say that it’s not worth it. I’m not conventionally pretty in any sense of the word, so I rarely if ever get male attention. As others have stated, don’t go to his house. In his mind the fact that you’ve already let him get to 3rd base with you has probably led him to believe you’re ready for that next step. Don’t worry too much about that, it happens in the heat of the moment sometimes. But that door has been cracked open for him, so going to his house to “hang” is just his way to get you into bed. If he rejects you for wanting to wait, you dodged a bullet. There will be other guys.

In the early days after I decided to get a divorce a couple months ago, I was heartbroken as well. It’s perfectly normal to feel that way. I’m in the process of splitting with my husband who was extremely close with his family, but we were kinda flipped. I tend to be a bit more optimistic and he was the realist. He was close to his family due to that realism, but for the sake of this discussion I’d say it’s closer to tribalism. But one of the things that drove us apart was him not cutting the apron strings. He went to his family with what was bothering him instead of talking to me about it. So I’d caution you about that kind of tri…

lmao they’re all linking it to the economic recession that’s been pretty much going on since ‘08 and I’m just laughing and thinking about how it’s so much more than that.

OMG I just witnessed this in the initial breakup of my marriage. A good friend said something on social media that some mutual friends of my STBXH saw and they went off saying he was a simp for daring to be sympathetic for me and what I was going through. Like, damn. I guess my friends can’t be my friends any more and I gotta be the monster. Sad thing is these were mixed male/female group of people. Blocked all those clowns because I don’t need that negativity.

I agree that the phrasing is weird, and I’m sure there’s a better way to ask the same question. I don’t really mean to disparage your field, but my point remains. Remove the career perspective, which biases your answer, from the equation and look at it philosophically. Your response is still colored by it because you talk about paying people based on their production and engaging employees to the benefit of the company instead of discussing that companies expect more production from their employ…

As she stated in the post, it’s a way to find out someone’s capacity for empathy. If someone thinks that someone should work a full work week, no matter their stress level, they don’t have a whole lot of empathy for that worker. If someone thinks that a stressed out worker should have a lightened work load to help them cope with the stress, they have empathy for the stressed worker. Stress can lead to a myriad of health issues, so shouldn’t we be working to lessen a person’s stress levels instea…

This! One of the reasons I’m glad I’m splitting with my husband is he was constantly on his phone while I was talking to him. When I told him that hurt my feelings his response was “I’m listening! I can multitask!” Which just further proved to me that he wasn’t really hearing me. It wasn’t about him “multitasking,” it was about him being actively participating in the conversation.

lmao my STBXH and I are now living in separate homes and he keeps hinting that he misses real food. Meanwhile, I’m getting PTSD flashbacks to his contributions to cleaning: half-assing the dishes after dinner. Thankfully my new roomie a) fully appreciates it when I cook for us and b) she actually whole-asses the dishes after a meal.

Unpopular opinion: I’m ok with minor dad bods. I’m lowkey myself and don’t put a lot of effort into how I look every day. Do I want someone who’s morbidly obese and has no sense of personal hygiene? No. Am I OK with a little bit of a beer belly? Sure! We’ll be matching, then.

I’m getting out of a marriage with a dead bedroom. I miss sex, but life was too exhausting to feel up to being intimate with him. He didn’t make me feel valued and loved. I am so glad I’m moving on.

THANK YOU!! I’ve never been conventionally pretty, and while I love this sub I always get disheartened whenever I see posts about not only the wall but comments emphasizing how we are putting effort into being conventionally pretty for dates as justification for things like not going 50/50 on dates. If y’all want to do all that for a date that’s fine, I’m not shaming that kind of behavior. I’m for the most part comfortable in my skin and don’t worry about my hair and makeup most days. This is just my experience, but keep your eyes on what he does around the house for you. If he’d rather game than help you clean or do laundry or anything to help keep the household running, get out. You’re going to turn into his mother and no woman deserves that. You deserve a partner who is willing to help you with chores.

My therapist and I have been talking about it in regards to the break up of my marriage, so I think there is some truth to it. But to your point, it does serve as an easy out, especially if the SO doesn’t look at what your language is and try to love you in a way you’d appreciate.

See, I feel like a weirdo in this sub for not really caring about an engagement ring. It’s not an anti-materialistic thing, it’s just that I don’t feel I need a ring to be reminded of my commitment to my SO. Am I wrong?

Guys who won’t cut the apron strings. STBXH was super close with his family, which on its surface isn’t a horrible trait. But when they’d rather go crying to mommy and siblings instead of being open and honest with you about your relationship in an effort to make it healthier, that’s when you cross that line into pink/red flag territory.

I regret marrying a gamer. I enjoy video games myself, but I swear to god that’s all his does. It’s so bad he plays games on his laptop and his phone simultaneously. And I wonder why our communication died... Never again.
