I get your point and agree in theory, but based on the studies I've seen that show mixed gender combat units perform worse than all male units, if I'm shipped off to war I'd rather women just stay home. My brother has two girls and he's the best parent I've ever met. Meanwhile his ex wife is always coming up with excuses for why she needs to drop off her daughters early, or why she can't take them for the weekend at all. Most crimes committed out of hatred of someone's gender are domestic violence or rape. Domestic violence doesn't target a community, but an individual. My anecdotal experience aligns with the data that shows women take more time off than men. The women at my company are constantly taking vacation days and asking for unpaid days off when they've used up their PTO. Meanwhile most of the men have a huge amount of hours banked and cash it out each year. Now obviously there's nothing wrong with using your vacation, but you can't complain about not getting ahead when others in similar positions out work you.

Sometimes, although it depends on what definition a person is using. Some mean financially independent, while others mean independent in that they don't rely on others to be happy. Speaking of the latter, some men and some women become totally reliant on their significant other to keep them entertained. They say things like, "If you go play golf/go shopping/etc, what am I supposed to do all day?" I have dated someone like that and hated it. So being independent is very important to me now.
