There are unfortunately a lot of therapists who treat therapy as a business, who subscribe to ideas that are peddled by the patriarchy, and those who are just wildly incompetent. I’ve encountered a few myself. Frankly, the best couples counselors I’ve encountered say, “we are here to figure out what the next best move is, and sometimes it’s divorce/a breakup/etc”.

Literally the only ONLY thing that I have to add is that if you have extreme relationship trauma, it is possible that you are having cognitive distortions that cause you to mistrust your partner. Notice that I said “cognitive distortions”... that means that your partner is NOT actually doing any of these behaviors. I have to add this because I was severely traumatized to the point where now when someone takes more than an hour to text me back I assume they’re cheating and lose it. This is very d…

I’ll never forget when I made a guy turn around and go home to get a condom. I was not going to have a baby with a LVM who had Michael Jordan screaming tattooed on his arm.

I know I picked up on that too. Like he’s trying to make himself sound better like “but look I think you’re beautiful doesn’t that fix the situation because my approval of your appearance is such a validating thing?”

“It’s a relationship not a fucking battlefield”. Damn, you are too right about that. I’m proud of you for loving yourself enough to walk away, especially since that’s seeming rarer and rarer nowadays. Enjoy your fabulous meals and your career, life’s about to get a lot better!!

Yeah my brother thinks it is my job to be his personal therapist amongst other annoying things. Happily set that boundary once I realized my worth.

I fell into this trap at some point when as a gay girl I started dating girls. I didn’t realize that the problem wasn’t that I was “nice”, it was that I was obviously insecure/people pleasing/trying to convince women I was something/not setting boundaries/etc. and those characteristics ARE NOT ATTRACTIVE TO ANYONE. Once I settled into being my full, authentic self, it was a lot easier to find girls who wanted to date me and the whole “women don’t like nice people” thing started to slip away. Nic…

I had a partner who was an alcoholic while I was also an alcoholic and eventually it got to the point for me where I couldn’t do it anymore and I told him it was either the alcohol or me, and he chose to get sober. I was ready to walk if he didn’t. He got and stayed sober for years, even after things ended with us. Sometimes you saying something can help, but ultimately being in a place where you can say “it’s fine if you want to do this to yourself, but I won’t stick around for it”, and being a…

I dated an alcoholic and one morning he got a text from an unfamiliar number. He didn’t have a password on his phone and I KNEW something wasn’t right, so I read the message and it was something flirty from a girl, so I responded pretending I was him and like I didn’t remember her and asked her how we knew eachother/what happened/etc. Boy woke up to me throwing his phone at his face.

If someone says that to me immediately after I bring up rape I IMMEDIATELY become extremely concerned, same as if I bring up women’s rights and men say “so does that mean I can hit a woman then??” Like... the fact that you’re going there even if you’re playing “devils advocate” is extremely disturbing.

Damn, that is extremely interesting and it makes a lot of sense that someone with a significant amount of trauma would be drawn to a situation that (it sounds like) exploited it. I’m glad that you were able to realize that it wasn’t making you feel good and resulted in therapy for you. I see what you mean - I have never considered before how aspects of what is “humiliating” are deeply rooted in misogynistic ideals. If someone were to engage in pegging, for instance, that’s fine. But using it as …

This idea is really interesting to me because it is a really different perspective than what I’ve learned generally in pop culture, so please know when I am asking questions it is not defensive, I’m just interested. So, in the BDSM community, the problem is that it is centered around pleasing the man, right? And in a gay relationship, whoever is dominant is just reflecting back misogynistic practices? I’m interested to know about your experience in the BDSM community that affected your views, bu…

I’d be really interested to know if this was always the truth in the gay community (lesbians specifically) because I know a few women who are heavily involved in BDSM and they only sleep with very experienced tops or bottoms who know about aftercare and safe words and stuff like that. These are lesbian women who have sex with other women. I’d argue that there is a difference between this type of BDSM and just being straight up abused, which is what it sounds like is ABSOLUTELY happening in porn …

This is a really good point that I enjoy. From the time I was a kid it was hammered into my brain that my job as a woman was to never emasculate a man by pursuing him or correcting him or being better than him at anything: to sit and smile and let him talk down to me and be grateful for the chance!

INTJs are the worst. Anyone I’ve met who identifies with the XNTJ is usually an asshole who feels superior to others. I am ok with people putting their type in their profiles though because it gives me an indication of how they view themselves, which is useful. Plus a good conversation topic: IE do you relate to your type. But if they defend the quiz to their death it is a red flag, and I’ve come across quite a few people who will.

Idk dude I personally hate the idea of having to “take” someone else’s sense of humor in this way. Like what about making jokes that aren’t degrading or that couldn’t be misconstrued as disrespect? Is it that hard?

It is really confusing to say the least when you first get into a dating situation with a dude and he treats you like garbage but HE acts like it is ok and everyone else also acts like it is ok so you start to wonder if it’s ok? I’m really glad to be in a place emotionally where I can trust my instincts and if someone treats me badly, I can get TF away from them.

Why are we asking men this at all? Every time I see a video like this I feel it confirms the idea that we are supposed to care what men think about our weight.

That’s the basis of it, I believe. If you want me, there must be something wrong with you. Or, now that you want me, I got validation, and I don’t want anything more from you. I always take comfort in the fact that often folks like this have a much longer, darker road to being able to be happy than the people they hurt.

It obviously doesn’t work if she’s hurting all the time. At the same time, I totally get it. Once that abandonment stuff is triggered in someone it can be extremely hard to overcome it. I know I’ve dated people who triggered it in me and I nearly lost my mind trying to make things work. Therapy is so fucking important. I’d venture a guess that there’s some trauma in her childhood where someone who really should have shown up for her did not. I’m extremely sad that she’s choosing to go with the m…

This shit is so frustrating. I had a close friend who was in love with a drug addict and just like she would tell me the most horrifying things about him. He totaled her car when he was fucked up on heroin. But she would always go back. It’s really hard to be friends with someone caught in that dynamic, like you want to be there for them but it’s excruciating.

As someone who is currently a giant red flag (woman, working on it in therapy and etc) I can definitely say these are things that I do and I’m learning not to... and I’m extremely toxic.

I think this can definitely go both ways. Either way, it’s fucking terrifying to me that I could be waking up next to someone who is only with me because they’re afraid they can do better. That’s fucking awful. Luckily, when this happens, they do things like refusing to commit, giant red flags. You were smart to pull this out of him ;)

I have spent most of my life drowning in “why”. Hours of reflection, driving around, trying to make sense of other people. It’s such a relief to get to the place where I can be like... well... at some point it just matters that this person treated me like shit, regardless of any reason and I need to protect myself from them. Not figure out if I deserved it or if they’re a narcissist or if they actually do care underneath it all. What a relief.

I too will never forget when I was studying computer science and my boyfriend would go on and on and on about how it was really hard to be my partner because I was so ambitious and independent. Can’t say it enough - if someone makes you feel like you’re hard to love... get away from them!

I think it’s important to note that I have no problem with women feeling womanly or women doing and enjoying these sorts of things. It’s the gate keeping in combination with bragging about pride associated with feeling like a stereotype forced as a way to seem appealing for me.

Ya it’s super interesting how this works, I left a situation because I couldn’t stand how I felt. I went back to it just to see and I realized that being in it felt way worse than being alone felt. I think too many people fail to get comfortable by themselves, which is why they’re always clinging to someone out of fear of being alone. Turns out, being alone is far, far superior than being in anything from a “meh” to an abusive situation. I wish more people had the chance to see this.
/r/FemaleDatingStrategy22/10/20 12:14 AM

Here’s the thing though: this isn’t always true. Sometimes someone will really like you but they won’t show up and they won’t connect and they won’t be able to be there for you for whatever reason. And at that point, they’re showing you that they aren’t ready for what you want, and it’s best for you to move on to avoid getting caught in their toxic mess. So yeah, them caring about you isn’t everything. They have to show up and treat you right too.

I had a boyfriend who was a raging alcoholic and I told him I would leave him if he didn’t stop drinking and he actually stopped and legitimately got (and stayed) sober. But, he was doing it for himself as much as he was doing it for me: he was tired of being ashamed all the time. I was also tired of being the girlfriend of someone who got arrested all the time for his drinking. I think being honest with your partner (and yourself) is super important about how much you’re willing to tolerate. I …

Idk if any of you have seen sex and the city but there’s this funny scene where Samantha says the test of a good relationship is if you’re like this “😕” or like this “😀”. She does it with more flair though. That show was wildly problematic but sometimes it really hit the nail on the head.
