Learning HDL requires huge amounts of additional learning on vlsic, logic types, signals, semiconductors, protocols etc. because it overlaps with so many different fields in electronics. If you are not into that sort of thing, you'll just drive yourself mad trying to learn it. Also, I havent seen one job application offer for HDL programmers that doesnt require a degree. Not trying to discourage anyone, but there are much easier and more stress-free job options to choose from.
