If it's actual depression I can't help. I lived with a guy that suffered from bouts of depression (approx 3 months). He wasn't willing to wind down during his elevated periods and that would then lead to periods of depression. If he wanted to avoid the depression he needed to learn to cool his jets when he was running hot in my opinion. But nobody likes to give up the mania.
