They segregate the STEM community, send the message to women that they aren't able to achieve the same things men can without special accommodations and creates animosity among men who feel they've been held back because opportunities are going to women "because they're women". My mate is doing his PhD at the moment. There are zero scholarships he can apply for, however there are about 10 scholarships specific to this field that are for woman only.

I got my degree for computer science back in the late 90s. The only women in the program were me, two other white girls, and handful of Indian and Pakistani girls with student visas. Us ladies were by FAR a minority in the program.

And guess what? Not one issue with sexism or with lack of opportunities due to gender. Not even one snide comment about how girls shouldn’t work with computers. Seriously, not a single whiff of sexism. All this girls only STEM crap is baloney. It is okay that girls prefer things like social work, education, nursing, etc. I’m tired of this forced attempt to even out the numbers.

Where’s the concern about low numbers of women in the mining industry? Or deep sea fishing? Or any other dangerous occupation that is predominantly male?

I took a lot of industrial technology and manufacturing engineering classes in school and they bent over backwards to get women to come into the program, gave them unlimited support. the whole classes fawned over them., just hoping some of them would make it into actual production manufacturing. they just werent interested, meanwhile as i was actually a bio major, the entire department was overrun by women in comparison.. which was FINE. let em do what they do, and fuck the fuck off,.

we talked about this a good amount when i was taking engineering classes and interning in robotics education. it really seems like it comes down to the parents, like if they nudge their kid in a certain direction or not. just about all the dads in engineering that i met had daughters in a hard science/engineering as well (if they had daughters).

As a STEM grad (IT), this is just bullshit. Women are treated no differently. Actually, being IT, there are always guys that are willing to help out the ladies if needed. I have never seen anyone treated poorly just because they were women.

Just because they are insecure about being in a majority group of males, it is not our fault nor something they can fix* by making bigoted programs like this. . What the fuck do they think the real world is? Hardly any women show interest in IT, so do they automagically think it is going to be 50/50 in the workplace?

What I find funny about this whole push for women in the work scene is that the feminists use overall job gender split to paint the picture that they're being discriminated against, yet when it comes time to demand more equal employment and pay, they only go for certain jobs.

Like my family and I were watching dirty jobs and Mike went out to some remote location where it was freezing cold and had to get pulley'd up a massive antenna like a hundred feet off the ground to work on it. Not a single woman was there. I pointed out how come these feminists aren't fighting to get jobs like this, only cushy office jobs, and that this was why women have a perceived discrimination in the work force. My mom and grandma were all over the pay gap and how discrimination is real. Yeah, there is discrimination, from women on which jobs they'll subject their Venus-crafted work of art bodies to.

No beautiful woman is going to work in a sewer maintenance job, climb massive antennas in the freezing cold, or pickup garbage for a living when she doesn't even need to work because men would line up to provide for her full stop. And the sad thing is men are so desperate for women that the barrier for entry to how pretty they need to be is so low that the majority of women could live life like this and be fine. Oh wait that was already a thing, it's called history starting ~30 years ago and everything before it.

I'm currently studying engineering and I think anything that encourages women to chose a STEM career over say nursing, law and business is worthy of implementing. I've got 150 odd students on average in most of my units and maybe 10 of those are women. That's on the high end in reality it's more like 1-3 per class.

There needs to be some encouragement, women aren't choosing to study STEM. This is a genuine issue within the STEM fields. A 5 min Google search gave me multiple research articles regarding this issue.

Geez guys, I'm all for PPD regular content but this is encouraging young women to choose a different path in life. These programs are aimed at young high school aged girls. There are plenty of programs open to everyone. This demographic needs these programs. Just in the same way men should be encourged to study nurcing.

Women face extreme sexism in science related subjects and other male dominated industries.

BUT men face the same in female dominated industries! I think it should go both ways, not shut one down or only keep one open.

I'm currently studying IT and it's bad. If I was easially pushed then I wouldn't continue. Not every girl is as strong as I am.

DON'T SHUT IT DOWN!!! Instead provide equal options for men who wants to study female dominated subjects!!

Oh come on. I can see being opposed to sex-based scholarships because that can be interpreted as direct discrimination in that it deprives men of money that may or may mean going to college, getting a good job, etc., but Women-only STEM enrichment programs don’t make men any worse off.

It’s not like universities are preventing men from getting STEM degrees. These programs are meant to funnel more women in into STEM *fields. Being opposed to female STEM enrichment programs like the Society for Women Engineers is no different than being opposed to a campus black culture center—it’s sexist and a really bad look.

These kinds of programs are because of the way women, minorities, etc were treated in the past. There are still many mothers and fathers out there these days that grew up thinking "girls cant do maths" so their kids grow up thinking its beyond them. While I agree that times have changed and women, or whomever may not need the helping hand, I think its still important that we make emphasis of it somehow. Maybe this isnt the best way but it is progress.

FWIW, there are still men out there who see women for their skirts rather than their brains....although I most certainly believe that is becoming a thing of the past.

And i also agree with many posters ...who cares? men have clubs, women have clubs...if men want to hang with men they shouldnt be forced to have women, and vice versa. The problem was that many of these clubs were how a person got hired or even noticed. That is the problem programs like these are trying to correct.
