Yeah, I think it could be described this way. But I feel that most of the time "just don't give a fuck" is referring to actively resisting negative thoughts, trying to counter them with positive thoughts or banish them from their brain. This is more about allowing them, labeling them as nothing but thoughts, and proceeding in accordance with your values.

Well said, and I think we're in agreement on much of the above. I agree def agree that there are legitimate criticisms of Tolle's work. I also agree that experience is king (I may be wrong, but I think Tolle compels people not to take his word for it, but to rely on their experience). It's been a while since I read his work, but I don't think Tolle makes a demon out of the egoic mind; I remember him saying that it serves a useful function. He probably does, however, present an unrealistic expect…

I believe it's saying that there's an inherent contradiction when one decides to improve him or herself because the person who wishes to improve is the same person who requires improvement. We say, "I wish to improve myself," as if there are two characters, but there is only one. Kind of like when Einstein said, “One cannot alter a condition with the same mind set that created it in the first place.” Not sure if that makes sense; I thought I had the insight for a second, but I lost it :)

I do think that most would disagree that lighting oneself on fire while maintaining perfect composure should be termed "the easy way out," but I get your point about suicide (though I strongly disagree that it should be characterized as "retarded and cowardly," especially when someone suffers from a disease such as bipolar, as in the case of my family member). I was not suggesting the burning monk should be someone to emulate though. So you really believe there's no value to all of the philosoph…

Diminishing the ego is basically telling your brain to shut off because you don't want to deal with the responsibility of handling your shit and controlling yourself despite the sensory barrage you receive every second. It's cowardice, plain and simple. No, that's not it. It's not shrinking from life experiences or refusing to feel. It's certainly not cowardice; I mean, look at this guy.

Yes, thank you for this. The material in the book I posted about seems to be written for people who probably are not that familiar with practicing mindfulness. It's very consistent with Tolle's stuff, but it's very practical advice on how exactly to tune out the negative (or even positive and neutral) thoughts that are unhelpful.

Negative thoughts happen, but I'm sure as shit not going to "thank" them or some nonsense like that. When I say "thank" them, it's more like acknowledge them as being nothing but thoughts. That is, something with very little significance. I am not my thoughts, so I'm not going to play a game of good thoughts vs. bad thoughts. I'm the entity observing the thoughts, and it's not my job to identify with my thoughts. For me, I would find your approach antagonistic within my own mind: Negative though…

I know what you're saying - I think they call this a "geographic solution" in alcoholics anonymous, where people think that starting over somewhere new is going to change things (not sure why I know that because I was never in AA). But I've been interested in Asia since I was a teen, I majored in E. Asian studies, and I studied there for a year in college. It's a real desire of mine to live there, and not an imaginary fix for whatever existential crisis I may be facing.

Did you do one? I checked them out and even made an inquiry, and the instructor for the timeframe that I'm available would've been a guy that I don't really resonate with (Jeffy). I'm sure he could teach me tons, but I thought that LS would be better for me.

I actually taught English for a bit in Japan my college years. I'd love to get a non-teaching job there, as English-teaching isn't the greatest career to have there.

It's not logical; I just have shame issues. I'm working on knocking it down and not letting it have much sway in my life.

I read more about ACT therapy and I found it intriguing (I love learning about psychology), so I picked up The Happiness Gap on Kindle - it's by the same author as the The Confidence Gap. I read that the content of the two books is very similar. So far so good.

I'm in good shape (I was a chubby teen, which had an impact on my self-esteem), but we definitely have some similarities. I'm also into meditation, positive thinking (affirmations help) and am looking for a career change. I've been through a period of unemployment and it sucks major donkey balls.

Thanks -- checking out the articles now. I've read Mark Manson's book Models, as well as his article on the limitations of bootcamps. So since you're in a similar place to me, what's your approach to improving your life?

Thanks fapstradamus. I've actually spent a year in Japan in college, so I know I like it. I've done the nofap thing, though I'm currently off the nofap wagon. Nofap helps, but it's almost like I don't know what to do with all the pent-up sexual energy. I've gone as long as two months (had a gf at the time, so I had occasional sex).
