The surviving family members would have to have relied on him for support or had a realistic expectation of economic benefit from his continued life. IAAL. No. She pled guilty to negligent homicide, not murder. The so-called "slayer rule," typically only extends to murder and manslaughter. Your killing of the person has to be ruled intentional or possibly reckless depending on the jurisdiction. Negligence is a lower culpable mental state than either of those, so one who caused the death of another could still receive life insurance proceeds under these circumstances.

A year in prison means a year of the state supporting her while her children have to be supported with foster care payments either to the relatives taking care of them or to a random foster family. It wasn't even the main idea of the article. The main issue here is police misconduct, but this is the sort of thing that makes feminists cry "rape culture" for no reason. It's fine to acknowledge that it's a traumatic experience, but let's not pretend that it was avoidable.

There's no alternative. That's the problem. If you want to gather evidence for rape, you have to gather it from…for lack of a better term…the scene of the crime. The reason this is bad reporting is that if you imply something is bad, you imply it should be changed. It's unavoidable unless you either stop investigating the crime or circumvent that whole thing about burden of proof being on the accuser.

Margaret Thatcher was not an attractive woman. However, her appearance was never an issue because whether her opponents agreed with her or not, no one doubted she was competent. Angela Merkel is pretty much a mirror of that situation. Janet Reno's appearance came up, but despite the fact that she was homely and unfeminine, it was usually portrayed in a positive light such as her getting into fist fights with men and winning. Because once again, she was competent.

Did anyone else notice that no specific incidents were cited? Could it be because they had nothing whatsoever to do with her lack of success? Could you imagine the reaction in the media if Obama pulled the race card? He would actually have more of a case than Julia Gillard does, but that wouldn't matter. He wouldn't be given the time of day but Gillard is being taken seriously because women have no accountability.
