I can confirm some of this. I fought for 50/50, and My ex has been poisoning the children's minds against me for the past few years in attempt to get full custody. I haven't had my daughter over here for 6 months. I think it's possible to have 50/50 custody for your kids and some cases, and they're worth fighting for, but the deck is definitely stacked against men.

Go to your doctor and tell him that you're going through something traumatic. Tell him specifically that you're losing sleep and you feel like you can't control your emotions. Your doctor will probably prescribe an antidepressant and Ambien. The antidepressant will help you get through your next few years and the Ambien will help you sleep. I'm really sorry you're going through this.

What is the issue here? Her dating someone, or living in his house? If he doesn't want her dating somebody then there's really nothing he can do about that. If there's a problem with her living in his house then he should kick her out, using the full authority of the legal system.

I wouldn't play games in this way. Accept she is dating and deal with it. You can't control her, and should not unless it affects your child. Stick to your agreement. Holder accountable to the same agreement if she radically divates from it.

I'm really sorry you have to do that. It is going to be heartbreaking but you must appeared at least say strong for the children. They're going to be looking at your every reaction to gauge how they should react. Some of the best life advice I ever heard is that everyone has hardship... The people that are most successful and happy in life are those that see hardship as something that changed them for the better. They literally retell stories of trauma in terms of how it had a positive effect on…

Exactlllly. I thought I had the world by its tail. Everybody at work was getting divorced and I remember coming home and telling her how sorry I felt for them, "knowing" that she would never leave me and she was perfectly happy in our relationship. Never once heard my ex-wife complain about our marriage. I was completely blindsided when I found out she was having an affair and wanted a divorce. It's humbling for sure. Most of all I am saddened by the affected had on my kids. There are a lot of b…

I'll give what you said some thought. It is an excellent thought, and I think both you and another poster had some good thoughts around the value of complete honesty here. I was thinking I might tell her when she is 18-25, should I feel the need and should the opportunity arise. My problem with doing it now is that it would be an obvious move "against" my ex, as viewed by my daughter and my ex, to increase my status in my daughter's eyes, and to cast blame for everything at my ex-wife, which I d…

TL;DR: Don't focus on how you feel about your ex, focus on how your son feels about missing his mom. The first thing I want to say is that I understand this feeling and I am sorry you are struggling with this. My kids used to say this a lot and still do (in other ways). I think my ex is a miserable person and she betrayed me and hurt me very badly long ago. That being said, I keep that shit to myself. I even had one of my best heart-to-hearts with my 16 yr. old daughter about a week ago, where s…

I realized I didn't answer your question very specifically. Just say something to the effect of: "hey it's really good to meet you and I want you to know that I don't have any animosity towards you for dating my ex-spouse. (Say this even if it is not true) I want you to know that being a father is really important to me and I want to make sure that this whole blended family thing is as easy as possible for my kids. Please let me know if there's anything going on that you think I should be aware …

My advice would be to start things off on the right foot Instead of threatening him about something that he likely would never do, you might just want to tell him that you want to have an open door policy with him and have a good relationship with him because of the kids. If he's a good man he'll be open to that. If he's not open to that well you've learned something about him

This is a really great dose of reality mixed with some practical advice. I really appreciate it. Thanks for the encouragement as well. I'll do my best.

Can you give me specific examples of what you have added to your custody agreement? We're going through potential changes right now and I would like to have some accommodations for communication so anything you could share would really help me.

Yeah I hear that. Mine cheated as well but I try not to get wrapped up in that. I'm just focusing on future.

Well I'm not in the mix and I haven't been for about a year, but yes, it's pretty much all just fun and games with her and she doesn't handle much of anything when it comes to "parenting" the kids. Yeah you would think that that would be something that's on her mind but in the 15 years we were married she never really expressed much concern for preparing the kids for adulthood. But I get your point here maybe I am making a mountain out of a molehill, thanks for your perspective and the time you …

Thanks. Hard to stop caring, because I think me not caring is bad for the children but I understand your point that I do need to set some boundaries there. Thank you

Oh boy did I need to hear this. This is just about bringing me to tears. I'm so frustrated and disappointed with my ex's behavior that I just want to scream sometimes. It's really good to hear that I'm not alone and there's other people out there that are doing the right thing despite the resistance. Thank you so much for your long reply and all of the supportive and helpful words. It sounds like you've had a hard time but rest assured that you've at least helped another single parent (and the k…

You won't get emotional advice from your lawyer. For that, see a therapist. Things are changing my friend, and you must accept them for you and the kids, and find a way to be a good parent and a healthy person in this difficult situation. Know this: you will get through this, and you need to do it in a healthy way. The legal advice you are getting from others posters is spot on. Follow that advice, and advice from your lawyer. God speed.

My ex did this to me. She used to do all kinds of crazy stuff like send me texts "on accident" about her talking to her men that she was dating. She would send me pictures of us, old memories. Every time I would drop off the kids or vice versa she would be all smiles and happy to see me. It's really hard to look at a woman that you once thought was so beautiful and you were in love with. I basically fell back in love with her and we got back together for about 5 years. The first year or so was g…

Just to clarify this guy's point, is that you're going to have to go to legal route here. The good news is that you have the upper hand, which is exactly what the above poster is trying to tell you. Also since you have split legal custody you guys have to come to an agreement. About a year before your kid goes to school... Make these points to your ex. Don't whine or complain. Be very factual and show her that you thought this through and that you got a valid argument. Do it via email. Make it s…

It doesn't matter what she thinks. Take them and put them into storage, move on. You never know if you might want them again. If your son asks where they are, get them out and hang them together, make them about you and him and your love for him, traditions with him, etc. In your own heart/mind, and in your sons, make it about the present and the future Christmases, not the Christmas's of the past and "what was". After Christmas, if you think your son will never bring them up again, throw them i…

d on your custody agreement. Mine specifically says that we must support extra-curricular activities. Pulling a stunt means I could take her to court AND she would have to pay both my and her legal fees (also part of the agreement) I am having a similar issue as OP (but kids are older). Can you share the language in your custody agreement that speaks to this arrangement?

Don't listen to this guy. Your marriage is over man. Ending the "affair" will do nothing.

Awesome advice man. Some days I really do feel like giving up and just letting her win because she's fighting a battle that I really don't feel like I can win. I'm in the US so I'm going to look into what you're talking about there. I don't "feel safe with him". I've heard that yarn as well.

Yeah my decree does say that and I'm getting to the point where I think I'm going to have a lawyer write a nasty letter. I don't know what else to do... It basically says that we'll be supportive of punishments by the other parent and we can't say anything or do anything that will ruin the natural love and affection from the other parent. The problem is is that this is kind of stuff is really hard to prove. My ex is a crafty one and she knows exactly what to do and say to get away with what she …
